How Well Do You Know Vegemite? Quiz

This is a quiz about one of my favourite foods - Vegemite! As an Aussie I was brought up on it, and still eat it daily. An Aussie cupboard or fridge without Vegemite is unthinkable. These questions start easy and get slightly harder.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Vegemite is a product high in vitamin B.

Answer: true

Their advertising both on the label, in magazines and on television claims Vegemite as "One of the World's richest known sources of Vitamin B".
2. What is the main ingredient of Vegemite?

Answer: Yeast extract

Apparently made as a by-product of brewing. This would be what gives it that very unique and some say 'acquired' taste.
3. In what year was the song/jingle called 'Happy Little Vegemites' first heard on radio?

Answer: 1954

Two years later advertisements appeared on television putting smiling young children's faces to the voices heard on radio. This campaign was marketed into the late 1960s - puts a rose in every cheek!
In the late 1980s this same campaign was revitalised with the addition of colour.
4. According to the label, Vegemite is proudly made in Australia since ....?

Answer: 1923

A true Aussie icon! It was 'discovered' in 1922, though not readily available until 1923.
5. Who were the 'developers' of Vegemite?

Answer: Fred Walker and Cyril Callister

The Fred Walker company, which subsequently became Kraft Walker Foods from 1926 until 1950, whereupon it changed wholly to Kraft Foods Ltd sought the services of a young chemist, Dr Cyril P Callister to develop a yeast extract spread. He went on to become one of the nation's leading food technologists.

The marketing vision of Fred Walker combined with the scientific talents of Callister resulted in vegemite.
6. In 1988 Kraft released a collectible vegemite jar, what shape was it?

Answer: A teddy bear

Strange, but true. A collectible teddy bear shaped vegemite jar was released. It has a dummy around its neck and is wearing a nappy! It was maddening trying to get the vegemite out of all the little nooks and crannies!
7. What size was the 1988 collectible jar?

Answer: 700g

The thoughts behind an unusual size of a 700g jar are anyone's guess, mine still has the price tag, $4.99 (Aud)
8. What shape would best describe the 70th Anniversary Commemorative jar?

Answer: Like a cone with the top cut off

The 70 years commemorative jar is dark brown (same as beer bottle glass) and has a half inch raised lip around the base. The lid is metal and gold coloured.
9. How was the name 'Vegemite' arrived at?

Answer: A national trade name competition with a 50 pound prize pool

Walker's daughter chose the winning name from hundreds of entries. This initiative, though common for flag designs etc was extremely innovative for a brand name, in its time.
10. In an attempt to rival Marmite, what was the name Vegemite briefly re-launched as?

Answer: Parwill

Marmite already dominated the market, at first Vegemite, as an unknown, failed to lure a decent market share. So Walker decided to rename it. Walker's cute play on words was "If Marmite, then Parwill", however, it was only sold in Queensland and failed. Walker went back to Vegemite and the rest they say is history!
