Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cards Against Humanity, the self-styled "party game for horrible people," was loosely based on what other, more innocuous card game?

Answer: Apples to Apples

In Apples to Apples, a player who acts as judge places a "description" card containing an adjective in the middle of the table and players must match it with one of their own "thing" cards containing a noun. The response judged to be the best match wins the round.

The popularity of this rather innocent and wholesome game inspired the creators of Cards Against Humanity to create a card-matching game that was neither innocent nor wholesome. In the latter game, the communal card is a black card containing a phrase or sentence with a blank. Players must match it with a white card from their hand, which contains a random word or phrase, quite often of a bizarre or outrageous nature.

The player acting as judge for that round then decides which answer is the funniest, based on whatever criteria they like.

This game is designed to transgress social norms, and the results can be either shockingly offensive or utterly hilarious, depending on your point of view.
2. Cards Against Humanity also inspired an unauthorised parody produced by Vampire Squid Cards by what name?

Answer: Crabs Adjust Humidity

The game's logo shows a crab turning a dial with its claw. This game was essentially an expansion pack for Cards Against Humanity that used the same kinds of black and white cards, and five volumes were produced. All five volumes could be purchased in a single "Omniclaw Edition." The makers of this game openly acknowledged that it was unauthorized and that it was completely unaffiliated with the company that produced Cards Against Humanity. What sort of legal status this gave the game, I don't know.

In 2020, the Crabs Adjust Humidity website stated that the game is no longer available, giving the dates "2013-2019."
3. The popular commercial game Uno was based on what game played with a standard deck of cards?

Answer: Crazy Eights

Crazy Eights has been the basis of many card games in which the aim is to be first to get rid of one's entire hand. There are various versions, but commonly eights would act as wild cards, while jacks might cause a player to skip a turn, and so on. Uno simplified this procedure by introducing special action cards with obvious meanings rather than designating ordinary numbered cards as having special rules.

Although Uno comes with a set of "official" rules, the instructions also suggest that players may decide on "house rules" before beginning the game that supersede the official ones, allowing the players to make the game as raucous as they can handle!
4. In this crazy game, players take turns placing cards onto a common pile, and depending on what card has just been played, the rules and object of the game can completely change! What is the name of this weird and wild game?

Answer: Fluxx

Game play starts out very simple, as players are required to draw one card then play one card onto a central pile. The game begins with a special card on the table called "Basic Rules" that specifies this procedure but does not specify what the object of the game is.

The object of the game is determined by playing a Goal card. Throughout the game, players can replace the Goal card to change the object of the game. Additionally, the Basic Rules can be replaced with a New Rules card that can change the game mechanics, such as number of cards one has to draw.

There are also Keeper cards which players may need to achieve the Goal, and Action cards that they can play during their turn that involve doing whatever is printed on the card. This may have no effect or it may cause chaos! Later editions of the game have added Creeper cards that can have adverse effects on a player's ability to achieve a goal and Ungoal cards that can end the game with nobody winning.

This game can get truly wild!
5. This is a tongue-in-cheek adaptation of the classic role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons to a card-based format, and is named after what imaginary creature?

Answer: Munchkin

In this game, all player start at level 1 and whoever is first to reach level 10 wins. Players move up a level by defeating monsters. Players can choose to either help or betray each other, depending on whatever is to their advantage at a particular stage of the game.

As well as the original edition, there have been many themed variants that can be played on their own or added to the original. For example, one variant is based on the TV show "Rick and Morty," and uses player characters and concepts from the show.
6. In this game, which is loosely based on a Renaissance theme, players start with two cards, each depicting one of five characters with special abilities, and take turns collecting coins. The aim is to force other players out of the game by making them lose their cards until one player is left standing. What is it called?

Answer: Coup

Although the game's backstory involves a Renaissance setting, this does not affect game play. Players can try to bluff by exercising abilities that belong to character cards they do not currently hold. Players can challenge other players they suspect of bluffing, and the other player must either prove they are not bluffing by showing the appropriate character card or forfeit a card. If the player meets the challenge successfully, the challenging player forfeits one of their cards. Additionally, when a player has seven coins, they can launch a coup against any other player, forcing them to forfeit a card.

When a player loses both cards, they are knocked out of the game.
7. Joking Hazard is a party game in which players are required to use one of their cards to complete a comic strip of three cards featuring pictures. It is based on what webcomic?

Answer: Cyanide & Happiness

This game is an adaptation of the creators' Random Comic Generator, a webpage that randomly juxtaposes three panels to create a crude story. Gameplay has been compared to a visual version of Cards Against Humanity in that players take turns to act as judge in each round and whoever comes up with the card combination judged to be funniest wins. Like Cards Against Humanity, the humour tends to be deliberately vulgar and aimed to shock one's sensibilities.
8. What is the name of this card game, which turns "Dungeons & Dragons" on its head by requiring players to compete to lure adventurers into traps and destroy them?

Answer: Boss Monster

Players compete with each other to build the most alluring, treasure-filled dungeon that will attract the most adventurers, so they can attempt to kill them and capture their souls. However, if a player's Boss Monster takes five wounds from the adventurers, they lose.
9. In this game, a player acting as the Leader sets the other players a mission to complete. However, some of the players are secretly spies who aim to sabotage the mission. What is it called?

Answer: The Resistance

The premise of the game is that players are part of an underground resistance organisation rebelling against an authoritarian government. However, the government has sent spies to infiltrate, who try to sabotage the efforts of the resistance. Players must try to deduce who they can trust to be selected for a secret mission on each round and vote on whether to go ahead with a mission for that round. If the mission goes ahead, the selected players then turn in a mission card face down that is marked as "success" or "failure." Even a single failure card will sabotage a mission. If three missions succeed, the resistance wins; if three fail, then the spies win.
10. This is considered the original deck building game. Players start with 10 cards in their play deck and buy more cards during the course of the game, competing with each other to build the most valuable deck. What is its name?

Answer: Dominion

Game play follows an A-B-C format: Action (play an action card), Buy (use a currency card to buy a new card), and Clean-up (discard unwanted cards and draw five new ones). When the game ends, the player with the most victory points - determined by special cards - wins. This game spawned a whole genre of deck building games and remains popular in itself.
