Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How much silver does a Draped Bust quarter dollar contain?

Answer: .8924

A Draped Bust quarter dollar is composed of 89.24% silver and 10.76% copper. US silver coins were not 90% silver until 1836 and 1837.
2. What is inscribed on the reverse of a Capped Bust quarter dollar ?

Answer: 25 C.

The Capped Bust quarter dollar was minted from 1815 to 1838 and designed by John Reich. These coins were all minted at Philadelphia mint because no other mints had yet been established. Also, the quarters of this series minted from 1815 to 1828 were about 2.4mm larger than recent quarters.
3. Who designed the Seated Liberty quarter dollar?

Answer: Christian Gobrecht

Christian Gobrecht also designed the Seated Liberty half dime, the Seated Liberty dime, the Capped Bust half dollar, the Seated Liberty half dollar, the Liberty Head quarter eagle, the Liberty Head half eagle, the Liberty Head eagle, and the Gobrecht Dollar.
4. Which mints coined the Seated Liberty quarter dollar?

Answer: Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City

The Seated Liberty quarter dollar (minted 1838-1891) was the first US quarter dollar to be coined at a mint other than Philadelphia. These coins were first struck at New Orleans in 1840, two years after the mint was established.
5. Who designed the Barber quarter dollar?

Answer: Charles E. Barber

Charles E. Barber also designed the dime and half dollar designs of this series that was first minted in 1892. This is known as the Barber series among collectors due to the lack of anything to make a nickname out of.
6. Which mint struck the rarest and most expensive quarter of the Barber series?

Answer: San Francisco

In other coin series, the coins minted at Carson City would usually be quite valuable, but no Barber quarter dollars were minted at Carson City. These coins were minted at Philadelphia, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco. The rarest coin of this series was minted at San Francisco in 1901, the mintage is 72,664 coins.
7. How many 1916 Standing Liberty quarter dollars were minted?

Answer: 52,000

With such a low mintage, these quarters sell for several thousand dollars in heavily circulated condition. The mintage for this year is so low because it was a transitional year. 1916 was the last year of the Barber quarter and the first year of the Standing Liberty quarter. Since over 8,000,000 Barber quarters were minted this year, there wasn't much of a need for a large supply of Standing Liberty quarters.
8. The Washington quarter dollar was not minted to commemorate the anniversary of Washington's election as the first president.

Answer: True

The Washington quarter dollar was first coined in 1932. It was minted to commemorate the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth in 1732.
9. What was the first year the mintmark was placed on the obverse of the Washington quarter dollar?

Answer: 1968

Before 1968 the mintmark was positioned on the reverse of the coin below the wreath. Also, the US coins minted between 1965 and 1967 all appear to be from the Philadelphia mint, this is not true. In the mid 1960's, there was a coin shortage because many people in the US were trying to collect each years coins and mints.

The decision was made to strike the coins at all the mints, but not engrave a mintmark into the dies.
10. What appears on the reverse of the Bicentennial US quarter dollar?

Answer: A Colonial drummer

The reverse of the half dollar and dollar US coins minted in 1976 were also designed with commemorative reverses. There was a contest held in 1973 by the Treasury, the winner for the design of each coin would be awarded a prize of $5,000.
