Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Matisse, Derain, Vlaminck

Answer: Fauvism

The Fauves, or wild beasts in French, were specialists with color. Fauvism was the first major movement of the 20th century avant-garde.
2. Picasso, Braque, Gris

Answer: Cubism

This movement saw its beginnings in the late 1900s, early 1910s, and was founded by Braque and Picasso. Their main influence? They say it was Cezanne...
3. Pollock, de Kooning, Rothko

Answer: Abstract Expressionism

Also known as the New York School, this movement developed in the late 1940s-early 1950s, though the first real Abstract Expressionist was Kandinsky who painted a fully abstract work in 1910.
4. Moholy-Nagy, Gabo, Calder

Answer: Kinetic Art

Kinetic connotes movement, and the works of these fellows do move. Calder's works are probably the most famous, his "Mobiles" hang from the ceiling of nearly every modern art museum in the world.
5. Duchamp, Arp, Richter

Answer: Dadaism

The name Dada was taken from a French dictionary and means 'hobby horse'. A ridiculous term for an absurd art movement that blew away the avant-garde with its wild developments!
6. Tanguy, Dali, Magritte

Answer: Surrealism

Surrealism, the stuff that dreams were made of. Freud's psychology very much influenced the Surrealists, as did the workings of their own inner minds.
7. Mondrian, van Doesburg, Rietveld

Answer: De Stijl

De Stijl means 'the style' in Dutch, and is characterized by blocked cubes of color divided by thin borders.
8. Lichtenstein, Dine, Oldenburg

Answer: Pop Art

Just as the name suggests, Pop Art drew its inspiration from 'pop culture', which can clearly be seen in the works of the above practioners. The British artist Richard Hamilton created the first work of pop art in 1956 with his ground-breaking "Just what is it that makes today's homes so different, so appealing?"
9. Lissitzky, Rodchenko, Tatlin

Answer: Constructivism

A Russian movement, as the names suggest, these artists found their influences in modern machinery and technology, and employed solid, geometric forms.
10. Monet, Renoir, Degas

Answer: Impressionism

The modern art movement that started the avant-garde rolling again, need we say more about these wonderful artists? Thanks for trying my quiz, happy museum going!
