Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Coppelia" is a ballet by Delibes. It centres around what sort of creature?

Answer: A life sized doll

The ballet centres around Doctor Coppelius who makes a life sized dancing doll. A local man becomes infatuated with her, but eventually his true love shows him that it is only a doll. The story probably came about because of the popularity of automatons in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The ballet premiered in 1870 and has remained part of the classical repertoire ever since.
2. The opera "Carmen" was up-dated and turned into a musical and a musical film under what title?

Answer: Carmen Jones

"Carmen" by Bizet was turned into "Carmen Jones" in 1943. The original music was retained but up-to-date words were written. Cigarette girl Carmen becomes parachute maker Carmen Jones, who seduces, and eventually betrays, the Air Force pilot detailed to drive her to prison. In 1954 it was made into a film starring Dorothy Dandridge, Harry Belafonte and Pearl Bailey.
3. Artist Canaletto is well known for his paintings of which city?

Answer: Venice

Canaletto was born in Venice in 1697. He is best known for his very detailed paintings of life on the canals of that city. He was much collected by tourists to Venice and he had a complete workshop producing paintings just for the tourist trade. He visited England more than once, painting Eton College and the interior of the Rotunda at Ranelagh.
4. Which "C" musical contains a song that tells us "don't be afraid of the dark"?

Answer: Carousel

The song is "You'll Never Walk Alone", which is sung over Bill's dead body, giving one of the most moving moments of the musical. First performed in 1945, this Rogers and Hammerstein musical is from the golden age of musicals. In addition to "You'll Never Walk Alone" it also contains "If I Loved You" and "When The Children are Asleep".
5. "Careless in Red" is an Elizabeth George book that features which detective?

Answer: Thomas Lynley

"Careless in Red" is one of a series of books featuring aristocratic detective Thomas Lynley and his unkempt rebellious partner, Barbara Havers. The first in the series was "A Great Deliverance", which was also Elizabeth George's first book. Elizabeth George is an American, born in Ohio, yet she perfectly captures the very English nature of Thomas Lynley, as well as not putting a foot wrong on English police procedures.
6. Where would you find a catafalque?

Answer: Supporting a coffin

A catafalque is a raised platform of some sort, often movable, used to support a coffin during a funeral or lying in state. It can be something very simple like a wooden frame, or more ornate. When used for a monarch or head of state the catafalque will usually be flag draped, and often surrounded by banks of flowers.
7. What does a choreographer do?

Answer: Arrange the steps and sequences of a dance

The choreographer ensures that the dance, be it ballet or modern dance, flows as a whole and is beautiful to look at. Many of the great choreographers, such as Bob Fosse and Agnes de Mille, were dancers themselves. This gives them a greater understanding of what the dancer can and cannot do.
8. Albert Camus was the first African-born writer and philosopher to receive which Nobel Prize?

Answer: Literature

Born in French Algeria in 1913 Albert Camus was often linked with Sartre. He denied being an existentialist, and now he is credited with being partly responsible for the rise of absurdism. Although an avowed pacifist, he joined the French Resistance during World War II, publishing an underground newspaper.
He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1957, and died in a car crash just over two years later.
9. In architecture, what is a cupola?

Answer: A small dome on top of a building

Coming from the Latin for small cup, a cupola is used to admit light and air, or as a lookout point. They are often found on top of a larger dome, although they can also be found on top of towers and spires. They were first developed in the Renaissance period.
10. Of the following which is NOT a painting by Caravaggio?

Answer: The Assumption of the Virgin

Caravaggio was trained in Milan and painted in Rome, Naples, Sicily and Malta. He became a great success in Rome in the early 1600s, but was unable to handle his fame. He indulged in street fights, spent several periods in jail, and even had a death warrant on him issued by the Pope. In 1606 he was forced to flee Rome after killing someone in a brawl. He died in 1610 at the age of only 38.

"The Assumption of the Virgin" is by El Greco.
