Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Arnolfini Portrait" (1434)?

Answer: Jan van Eyck

Often wrongly referred to as the "Arnolfini Wedding", it is not in fact a wedding portrait. Nor is the wife pregnant: she is merely holding up her gown in what was the fashionable style of the time.
2. "The Ambassadors" (1533)?

Answer: Hans Holbein the Younger

The two figures are Jean de Dinteville (French Ambassador to England) and his colleague Georges de Selve, Bishop of Lavaur. The painting has recently been magnificently restored.
3. "The Virgin of the Rocks" (c.1508)?

Answer: Leonardo da Vinci

The painting's full title is "The Virgin with the Infant Saint John adoring the Infant Christ accompanied by an Angel".
4. "The Hay Wain" (1821)?

Answer: John Constable

Constable is one of the greatest of British landscape artists. The site of "The Hay Wain" is on the River Stour, near Flatford, in his native Suffolk.
5. "The Umbrellas" (1881-86)?

Answer: Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Renoir took several years to complete this painting. The different dates can be established not only by the different painting styles, but also by the changing fashions of the womens' costumes!
6. "Sunflowers" (1888)?

Answer: Vincent van Gogh

Van Gogh famously only sold one painting during his lifetime: "The Red Vineyard", which sold for 400 francs at an auction in Brussels, 5 months before his death. "Sunflowers" was painted at Arles, when he was working with Gauguin: there are other Sunflower pictures from the same period.
7. "The Rokeby Venus" (1647-51)?

Answer: Diego Velazquez

So called because it was in the collection at Rokeby Hall in Yorkshire before its move to the National Gallery in 1906.
8. "The Fighting Temeraire" (1839)?

Answer: Joseph Mallord William Turner

The picture shows the ship, which fought at the Battle of Trafalgar, in 1838 at the end of her career, being towed away to be broken up.
9. "Marriage a-la-Mode" (1743)?

Answer: William Hogarth

Actually a series of six paintings, showing the perils of marrying for money rather than for love. Both husband and wife end up dead: he killed by her lover; she commits suicide.
10. "The Water-Lily Pond" (1899)?

Answer: Claude-Oscar Monet

One of many treatments of Monet's famous garden at Giverny.
