Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While this looks like the symbol for Harry Potter, it is actually the weapon of choice for the king of the Roman gods. Which god was it?

Answer: Jupiter

Jupiter was the king of the sky and of weather. The lightning bolt (seen in the picture) was his weapon of choice. Many of the other Roman gods were his children or siblings. Notorious for his infidelities, many of the heroes of Roman myth were his children out of wedlock. His Greek equivalent was Zeus.
2. This weapon looks like something that Percy Jackson might use, but its also a weapon for his father. Which god (who wouldn't want the weapon to get wet) is this?

Answer: Neptune

Neptune was the god of the seas and oceans. He was the brother of Jupiter. Neptune was the patron of ships and sailors. He also had a connection with inland bodies of water such as lakes and rivers. The trident (shown in the picture) was his weapon of choice. His Greek equivalent was Poseidon.
3. This god might use these tools when creating a new device or weapon that he or one of the other gods might use. Which god (who sounds like he has a connection to Mr. Spock) is this?

Answer: Vulcan

Vulcan, as the blacksmith of the gods, would often use the hammer and tongs shown in the picture. The fire of his forge was also seen to have a connection with volcanoes. (The study of volcanoes is "Vulcanology".) His Greek equivalent was Hephaestus.
4. This god is associated with the fruit shown in the image as well as a drink made from the fruit. Which god was it?

Answer: Bacchus

Bacchus was the god of the grape harvest (shown in the picture) and wine. His Greek equivalent was Dionysus. Bacchus was one of the children of Jupiter. He is associated with (unrestrained) revelry.
5. She's not merely a Wonder Woman! Associated with the hunt, this goddess would make good use of the weapon shown in the picture. Which goddess is it?

Answer: Diana

The bow and arrow (shown in the picture) are images associated with Diana. She was goddess of the hunt as well as the moon. Her Greek equivalent was Artemis. Diana was a goddess of childbirth although the myths generally portray her as unmarried and having no children. Her twin brother was Apollo and her father was Jupiter.
6. This god sounds like a New York City theater and is associated with the celestial object shown in the picture. Which god was this?

Answer: Apollo

Apollo is unusual among the gods and goddesses in having the same name in Greek myth and Roman myth. He was the brother of Diana and the son of Jupiter. In addition to being the god of the sun, Apollo was also the god of music, poetry, and healing. The Apollo Theater is a famous landmark in New York City.
7. This god would be associated with this symbol since he was the god of war. Which god (namesake of a red planet) was this?

Answer: Mars

Mars is the god of war as a way to secure peace. His Greek equivalent was Ares. He is the son of Jupiter and includes among his children Romulus and Remus, the founders of the city of Rome. In Greek mythology his children included Deimos ("Terror") and Phobos ("Fear"), which are the names of the two moons orbiting the planet Mars.
8. With a name that sounds like a breakfast food, this goddess is also associated with the animal shown in the picture. Which goddess was this?

Answer: Ceres

Ceres was the goddess of agriculture and the harvest. The word "cereal" comes from her name and a sheath of grain is one common symbol although a pig (shown in the picture) is another common symbol. Her Greek equivalent was Demeter. In myth, she was responsible for the seasons (specifically winter) after Pluto (Hades) kidnapped her daughter Proserpina (Persephone) to make her his bride. Ceres was the sister of Jupiter.
9. Two snakes helped make the divine symbol shown in this picture. Who (sounding rather quick) was this god?

Answer: Mercury

Mercury was the messenger of the gods as well as those who "lived by their wits", such as merchants and thieves. His Greek equivalent was Hermes. His symbol was the "caduceus", a staff entwined with two snakes (suggested in the picture). Mercury was a son of Jupiter.
10. This goddess was associated with the hearth and in Greek myth her name sounds like that word. Who was this goddess?

Answer: Vesta

Vesta was the goddess of the hearth and fire (shown in the picture). She is the eldest sister of Jupiter. Her Greek equivalent was Hestia. The priestesses who attended the fire in her temple in Rome were the famous Vestal Virgins of Roman history. Vesta was one of the more abstract goddesses and appeared in relatively few myths.
