Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What did the builder's sign read at the building site of the opera house?

Answer: Warning! This is a construction aria.

Warning signs are usually seen on construction sites of most building works, along with safety fences erected around the works as well. These are all for the protection of the general public and should be heeded at all times. An aria is a solo performed in any opera.

These are usually, but not always, performed by the leading soprano or tenor. Arias can also be considered instrumental solos, but the most common interpretation is that of a vocal performance. The pun combines the words aria and area.
2. How did the Indonesian man say goodbye?

Answer: Sarong

A sarong is a large piece of patterned material often seen wrapped around the waist and lower half of people from south-east Asia and the Pacific islands. An interesting difference in styles worn in Malaysia is that men traditionally wear sarongs of checked patterns, while the women have the choice of far prettier and brightly coloured ones.

The pun here combines the word sarong with the farewell greeting of "So long".
3. If Homer Simpson was born in Germany, what would be his familiar saying?

Answer: Der

"Der" is the German article for various objects assigned a masculine gender, "Die" is the article for objects assigned the feminine gender, and "Das" is assigned to objects with a neutral gender. A rose, for example, is considered female so it would have "Die" placed in front of it, and would be pronounced "dee Row-suh" (the rose). Homer Simpson is a major character in the long running television cartoon "The Simpsons".

He is most known for exclaiming "Duh" (spelled as "D'oh") at various times. The pun for this question combines the similar sounds of "Duh" and "Der"
4. What did the dog do when it got off the boat?

Answer: Disembarked

Disembarking from a boat simply means to get off and unload goods. Dogs verbalise by barking. Barked and disembarked are combined in the use of this question.
5. What did the famous mathematician say about his dead bird?

Answer: Polygon

In geometry, a polygon is a shape with boundaries of straight line segments that eventually connect up to form a closed shape. Because parrots often go by the name "Polly", A polygon is used in this pun to become a dead parrot, ie "Polly gone".
6. What material was the dress that the astronomer's wife wore to the ball?

Answer: Saturn

Satin is a material with a glossy, shiny surface that is often found in elegant gowns worn at weddings or balls or posh society events by women. It can occasionally be used in bed sheets as well. These can be dangerously slippery. The planet Saturn is the 6th planet from the sun and is famous for its many rings. The pun here is in the use of Saturn and satin.
7. What happened to the disruptive rock group?

Answer: They were banned.

A rock and roll music group is often referred to as a band. If any person, or several people, have been barred from attending any venue, they are said to be banned, so the pun here is in the use of the two words banned and band.
8. How did the carpenter feel after a hard day's work?

Answer: Saw

A saw is a hand tool with serrated edges that is used to cut through various materials, but the most likely of these for a carpenter is wood. If anyone has been working an extra long and exhausting day, their muscles are usually a bit sore. Here the similar sounding words saw and sore are used for this pun.
9. What did the butcher's wife say about his meat?

Answer: It tasted offal.

Offal consists of organ meats from an animal that has been slaughtered for human consumption. It consists of products such as tripe, kidneys, liver, tongue, brains and so on. Ugh. They used to give us offal at boarding school - such as a great ugly tongue, still with the roots attached, plonked on our plates. One expected it to start talking at any moment. Anything that is described as awful is ghastly, terrible, repulsive, revolting and any other similar adjectives. Because the two words sound a lot alike, awful and offal are combined for this pun.
10. What did the Indian woman say when she spilled milk on her mother-in-law?

Answer: Sari.

A sari is a beautifully coloured, soft and flattering garment worn by women in the Indian subcontinent. It is a straight piece of material that usually measures between five to nine yards and is wrapped elegantly around the form of the wearer in one way or another. To apologise to anyone for a wrong you have done is to say you are sorry.

The pun combines the word sorry with the similar sounding word sari.
