Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is an important part of a duck's constitution?

Answer: Bill of Rights

This woeful pun combines the famous United States Bill of Rights - the first ten amendments to that nation's equally famous Constitution - and the mouthpiece of a duck, which is known as its bill, an alternative name for its beak.
2. Which government building was visited by the horse wanting to complain about the city council?

Answer: Office of the Mayor

The word play combines the word "mayor", who is the highest ranking official in the local governing body of cities, towns or shires - and a "mare", a female horse. Mare is a homophone for mayor. Obviously, that aggrieved horse would want to see the mayor mare to complain about the city council.
3. What name did the laboratory assistant call the electrically charged rodent at mealtimes?

Answer: Ration

Thanks to the Scrambled Eggheads team member Moonraker2 for this pun! An ion is an atom with either a negative or positive electrical charge, and a rat is a rodent. Together they form the word ration, a word on which this pun is based, and which is a controlled allocation of food, goods or other resources.
4. When the Eskimo was asked how he pasted photographs into his album, what was his response?

Answer: Igloo

This word play combines the word "igloo" which is a shelter built of compacted snow once greatly favoured by the Inuit people of Canada's colder region - and, if you look at it from the perspective of pasting photographs into an album, a word that sounds a little like "I glue".
5. What nickname did the police give to the notorious Christmas thief?

Answer: Saint Nick

Saint Nicholas was a fourth century Greek saint, who was the Bishop of Myra in today's modern Turkey. Saint Nicholas, or Saint Nick, as far as this word play goes, is another name for that much loved children's figure of Santa Claus. The word "nick" is applied here to the Christmas thief, because in that context, it is also slang for stealing.
6. What name did the Priest give to his female canine when she whelped?

Answer: Dogma

A member of the Scrambled Eggheads, Jomarion, gave us this hilarious pun. Dogma, as relating to religion, is any faith's official system of tenets and beliefs. As far as this word play goes, "dog-ma" is also the Priest's female canine that has just given birth to puppies. She was their ma, in other words.
7. Where do overnight campers sleep?

Answer: Intense

Intense is a word meaning excessive, full on, over the top, severe or exhausting. The pun rests on the sleeping shelters for campers - tents - because those hardy camping souls retire for the night "in tents" to have their much needed rest.
8. What instruction was the bass-baritone given for his operatic role?

Answer: Below

A bass-baritone, with his beautifully rich and deep voice, has the second lowest of the vocal range in singing. He can usually reach up to the lower register of a tenor at a push, or comfortably descend to the bass as well. So if that accomplished musician was told to "be low" by the conductor of a choir or opera, he has been asked to sing the lower notes as well.
9. When the stage manager needed to supply cow manure for a play about life on a farm, what did he use?

Answer: Shampoo

Scrambled Eggheads team member, Austinnene, came up with this hilarious pun. Why any piece of drama or comedy would require a piece of cow manure as a prop is of course debatable, but that isn't the issue here. The directions for the play called for same, and as plonking a real piece of cow dung on the stage would probably contravene all sorts of health regulations, our canny stage director has gone to a novelty shop and purchased some sham (fake) poo (manure) instead.
10. Where do prison inmates eat their meals?

Answer: Constable

Another word for a prison inmate, or any criminal for that matter, is a conman, or "con" for short. Prison inmates, like anyone else, eat their meals at tables, so this word play combines the two categories, con and table, to give us constables, or "cons' table".
