Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is "a long, light rowboat, sharp at both ends"? In modern times they're usually occupied by a single person.

Answer: wherry

A ferry is a vessel for carrying goods and people from shore to shore across a specific body of water, and is legally a continuation of the highways which lead to it. A coracle is a small boat made by stretching a hide over a wicker frame (Jim used one in "Treasure Island"). Coquina is a soft, whitish stone made of broken shells and coral cemented together, used for road beds and building material.
2. Which word means "mighty hunter"?

Answer: Nimrod

Nimrod is from the Bible (Genesis 10, v 8-10), a son of Cush who was a mighty hunter and ruler. A knave is a boy servant or a crafty person. A dorking is an English domestic fowl. Funk originally meant "to be frightened, to flinch, to shrink back".
3. This word is useful for discussing the charms of waitresses without offending them or your fellow diners. Which of these means "having shapely buttocks"?

Answer: callipygian

Cabotage is coastal trade or legal restriction of air traffic. Kedgeree is an East Indian dish (food, not ceramic). Supernal is heavenly, divine, or lofty...which brings us back to our original word!
4. Which word is synonymous with "absquatulate", meaning "to hide, be concealed, or depart clandestinely"?

Answer: abscond

Harbour can be a verb, but it refers to offering refuge, possibly clandestinely, but not having any import of departure. Adjure is a variant of abjure, meaning to repudiate or profess to abandon. Masticate means chew.
5. What are you if you're orientated?

Answer: Aligned toward the east.

One goes to orientation to get oriented, not orientated (just as arbitration is performed by arbiters, and commentators comment).
6. Of the many words assimilated into English from Yiddish, which of these -- according to "Every Goy's Guide to Common Jewish Expressions" -- means "An inept, bungling person; a habitual failure"?

Answer: schlemiel

A frisson is an emotional thrill or shudder. A skua is a north Atlantic gull. A schlemiel is an awkward and unlucky person for whom things never turn out right. The difference between schlemiel and schlimazel, according to "Every Goy's Guide to Common Jewish Expressions", is that a schlemiel is the guy who always spills the soup, and a schlimazel (several spellings are common) is the guy it lands on.
7. Alright is the correct term for feeling fine or doing well.

Answer: FALSE

No matter how many generations are erroneously influenced by The Who, the correct term is two words, "all right".
8. What is a uvula?

Answer: The pendent fleshy lobe in the soft palate -- that thing you see hanging down when you open your mouth wide

The external female genitalia are known as the vulva. The human leg bones are the tibia, fibula, and femur. I don't know whether there are carnivorous parrots.
9. To impact means to damage.

Answer: false

Impact is normally a noun, but it can be used as a verb, within a very limited definition. "To impact" is "to come into forcible contact" or "to press firmly together; to pack or wedge". Logs in a river, wisdom teeth, or bowels can be impacted, but political situations and economies cannot.

This word is often used incorrectly.
10. Just for fun, a Southern United States colloquialism. When one is naked, one "ain't got no clothes on". According to the late, hilarious, Lewis Grizzard, what are you if you're "nekkid?"

Answer: You ain't got no clothes on, and you're up to somethin'!

Stolen without shame from Mr. Grizzard, a very funny man who is missed by many.
