Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the baby's toys was broken during the earthquake?

Answer: Her rattle

Rattles have been around for the purpose of amusing babies for so long that their first known use hasn't ben recorded except to say they stretch back to antiquity. In addition to amusing babies, and hopefully stop their more than occasional wailing, rattles also help them develop their eye muscles as they focus on the sound, and the ability to grasp objects as they reach for them.

Earthquakes make just about everything rattle, from houses to household goods, from teeth to giant buildings. These terrifying attacks by nature have likewise been around since antiquity and are usually caused by the earth's tectonic plates moving past, over, or under each other along fault lines. The pun rests in combining the use of the word rattle for both things.
2. Which ABBA song was the bee's favourite?

Answer: Honey Honey

"Honey Honey" appears as the second single on the famous Swedish group ABBA's second album, "Waterloo". Released in 1974, it was written by Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Stig Anderson, and recorded both in English and Swedish. The song has nothing to do with honey the product at all, but the word is repeated many times over to indicate a romantic attachment.

The product honey is a delicious, nourishing and life giving substance made by nature's little miracles, bees. As depicted in a cave painting in France, man has collected and eaten this product for at least 8,000 years. Apart from being consumed for food, some of its uses by man over time have included healing skin wounds, burns and ulcers, as a mild form of antibiotics, easing coughs, helping deal with some of the unpleasant side effects of radiation and chemotherapy treatments, as a sugar substitute in cooking, and embalming the dead. The pun rests in combining the title of the song with the honey produced by bees.
3. What did the dentist say after eating a large meal?

Answer: It was very filling

A dentist is a trained and very expensive (to my sorrow) medical professional who specialises in the treatment of all problems associated with the teeth. Part of his work includes removing cavities which have begun to erode into a tooth's enamel, drilling out any gunk from same, and then "filling" the hole with amalgams and other products so that the tooth regains its ability to properly chew. One day they'll invent less terrifying procedures for this work, and the sooner the better.

If one has eaten a very large meal - which isn't terribly good for you, just in passing - it leaves the consumer with a feeling akin to being filled to the brim. This is where the pun rests in this question - between a filling meal and a filling carried out by a dentist.
4. What happened to the podiatrist who took up a sideline as a door to door salesman?

Answer: He got his foot stuck in the door

A podiatrist is a trained professional whose work includes the study and treatment of problems associated with feet and ankles. Some podiatrist are also trained as surgeons in order to carry out any surgical interventions that this entails. They're usually called podiatric physicians. Mostly though, your average run-of-the mill podiatrist deals with surface feet conditions that can be treated in the one visit.

A belief associated with many door to door salesmen is that, in order to stop a potential customer from shutting the door in their faces, they will put a foot forward and across the door opening in order to prevent that closure. While there would be some truth to this belief, it's possibly more myth than fact today as that would run a real risk of having the door slammed on top of the foot - and incurring enough damage from this, that a trip to a podiatrist would well and truly be warranted. The pun is in the "foot" in the door technique associated with salesmen, and the treatment of either foot carried out by a podiatrist.
5. Think about this one: What was the favourite form of entertainment for Rodin's statue of "The Thinker"?

Answer: Musicals

"The Thinker" is a famous bronze statue created by August Rodin. It features a naked man sat upon a rock deeply engrossed in thought. Some say he represents the thought associated with philosophy. This is possible of course, but he could be thinking about anything really. The original created by Rodin was part of a work called "The Gateway to Hell" and was given its inspiration by Dante's "The Divine Comedy", so perhaps that thinker is pondering the mistakes of his life which led him there. Quite frankly though, this statue also rather reminds one of someone sitting on the toilet.

To "muse" on something is to think about it deeply. The syllable "mus" which is pronounced the same as "muse" is the first part of the word "Musicals" - and therein lies the connection between the two for this pun.
6. How could you describe the part of the main character in the movie "Rocky"?

Answer: Role with the punches

The 1975 movie "Rocky" stars Sylvester Stallone as an Italian-American boxer who collects money for a loan shark in Philadelphia, but who eventually gets a chance at the world heavyweight boxing championship. The fight when it takes place is incredibly violent and goes the full fifteen rounds with the announcement of the winner going down to a split decision. The highlight of that match was the ability of Rocky to "roll with the punches" and still keep fighting.

A "role" is a part in any production, whether it be movie, play, radio or television - anything in fact where the skill of acting is required. The pun lies in the exchange of the words "role" and "roll".
7. What was the favourite fruit of the Irish Protestant?

Answer: Orange

Ireland, and Northern Ireland in particular, has suffered for many years with an ongoing distrust and dislike between the Protestants (represented by the colour orange) and the Catholics (represented by the colour green). The Orange Order, for example, is a Protestant fraternal organisation there. It was founded way back in 1795 during ongoing struggle between the two religions in County Armagh, and its hard-nosed members are known as Orangemen. Once a year, just to make matters worse and keep the anger pot bubbling away, it marches through mainly Catholic areas of this troubled country. Ongoing violence is usually the result. And all done in the name of the Lord. Jesus continues to weep.

An orange is also a fruit, lovely and juicy and filled with the goodness of vitamin C. The pun intermingles these two meaning for this question.
8. When the gardener was called upon to make a speech, how did he handle it?

Answer: He rose to the occasion

A rose is a lovely flower that comes in hundreds of different varieties, colour and perfumes. It has delighted the heart of man through the ages and always will. Any rose is a monument to beauty. When anyone has stood to their feet from a seated position, it can be said that they rose or have risen to same.

The pun is in the combination of the two forms of rose, one a plant grown by gardeners and the other a verb.
9. What did the depressed sky say?

Answer: I feel blue

If anyone is feeling sad, or depressed, or generally down in the dumps altogether, they are said to be feeling blue. Blue, of course, is also a colour, so the pun here is in using the colour to describe a mood associated with that colour.
10. What did the giant panda shout to frighten people?

Answer: Bamboo

A giant panda is a bear that can be found in China. It comes with a white and fluffy body, black legs, and with black patches around its eyes and on its stomach. It looks absolutely gorgeous altogether, but beware, do not ever try to pat one or go anywhere near it, as these bears have been known to attack humans. The major part of this fascinating creature's diet is bamboo.

As a common method of scaring people out of their wits is to shout "boo" at them, this is where this pun rests, i.e., the "boo" in bamboo with the "boo" used to frighten people.
