Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The old religion of Westeros was practiced in sacred groves, called Weirwoods. What does a weirwood tree look like?

Answer: white bark, red leaves, and a face carved into the heart tree

The old religion bears some resemblance to the Celtic practice of worshiping in oak groves. In the south of Westeros many heart trees were cut down after the Andal Conquest, but most castles and towns still kept a weirwood as a place of contemplation and spirituality.
2. Who or what is a "septa", to those who follow the Seven?

Answer: a holy woman

Churches are called "septs" and priests are "septons".
3. What is the name of the Lord of Light, worshipped by the Red Priests of Pentos?

Answer: R'hllor

The Lord of Light was originally a religion of Pentos, but it has spread to several corners of Westeros. Stannis Barrantheon, Beric Dondarrion, and a sizable group of priests in Oldtown follow the ways of R'hllor.
4. Where do people worship the Drowned God?

Answer: on the Iron Islands

To join this rather strict congregation you must be drowned, then resuscitated, by a priest. There is little wonder why this religion never became popular anywhere except in the grim, cold Iron Islands.
5. Why did Mirri Maz Duur cause the death of Khal Drogo and his unborn son?

Answer: He had destroyed her temple of the Great Shepherd.

Daenerys thought that she had saved the old woman's life and trusted her to heal Drogo's wound. But the maegi wanted revenge for the destruction of her village and temple. She also wanted to kill the unborn baby whom prophecy had called "The Stallion Who Will Mount the World". This way the baby would never live to grow up and attack the Lamb People again.
6. When Arya arrives in Braavos, she stays in a temple whose main sacrament seems to be assisted suicide. What is this place called?

Answer: the House of Black and White

A priest known only as "the Kindly Man" takes Arya in and makes her an acolyte of Him With Many Faces. People visit the House of Black and White to drink poison from a cup and then lay down on marble benches to die. Arya's job is to seek out the bodies each morning, strip them, wash them, and bear them off for disposal.
7. The main religion for most of Westeros is the worship of the Seven. Which of the Seven represents the common working man?

Answer: the Smith

Of the Seven Aspects of God, 3 are male (the Father, the Warrior, & the Smith), 3 are female (the Maiden, the Mother, & the Crone), and one, the Stranger, could be either.
8. What do the Dothraki believe happens to their dead?

Answer: they become stars in the nighttime sky

Dothraki think that each star is the light from the campfire of a fighter's khalasar (warrior band).
9. Why did Jon Snow send Maester Aemon away from the Night's Watch when he was 102 years old?

Answer: He was afraid Melisandre wanted to use him to be a sacrifice.

Lady Melisandre was a Red Priestess who believed in human sacrifice. The most potent blood was that of royalty, and Maester Aemon was a Targaryen of the old ruling house. Jon sent away Mance Ryder's infant son for the same reason, as Mance was known as "The King Beyond the Wall".
10. During the rule of King Tommen, King's Landing was overrun with homeless men who had become very devout. What was the sarcastic name given to these pious fanatics?

Answer: sparrows

Queen Cersei thought that she is using the religious movement to further her own ends, but her scheming backfired dramatically when the new High Septon charged her with immorality and corruption.
11. What bloodthirsty goddess is worshipped in the cities of Astapor, Yunkai, and Meereen?

Answer: the harpy

Astapoor, Yunkai, and Meereen are eastern cities founded on slave trading. Daenerys conquers these cities, but finds them harder to reform than to defeat. Each city has a high brick pyramid surmounted by a statue of a harpy.
12. What book serves as a bible for those who worship the Seven?

Answer: The Seven-Pointed Star

This book is in the hands of almost every pious follower of the Seven.
13. Which holy order tends to the recently departed on Westeros?

Answer: the Silent Sisters

The Silent Sisters take vows of chastity and silence and are in charge of preparing the dead for burial. They are considered to be the brides of the Stranger.
14. Where do Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly take their vows to become members of the Black Watch?

Answer: at a Weirwood north of the wall

The Starks had always followed the Old Religion. Sam was raised in the ways of The Seven, but he commented, "They haven't helped me so far."
15. Where do the Dothraki believe all important ceremonies must take place?

Answer: outside, under the sky

Marriages, consummations, battles, deaths - everything important in a warrior's life - should happen beneath the open sky.
