Drogon is one of the dragons that hatched at the very end of the first book, "A Game of Thrones". His 'mother', Daenerys, was born into House Targaryen, whose sigil is a three-headed dragon, and receives three petrified dragon eggs as a wedding gift when she marries into the Dothraki tribe of horse lords. After the death of her husband, Dany brings the eggs into his funeral pyre and emerges unburnt with three live baby dragons. This is significant as dragons were thought to be long extinct; having the only living dragons in the world is a great advantage to the ambitious Daenerys.
Drogon is named for Dany's husband, Drogo, and the other two are named Viserion and Rhaegal, after Dany's dead brothers Viserys and Rhaegar.
2. Pyke
Answer: Greyjoy
Pyke is one of the Iron Islands, the region of Westeros ruled by House Greyjoy, as well as the name of the castle which is their home. Theon Greyjoy, who at the beginning of the series lived at Winterfell, returns home to Pyke in "A Clash of Kings" for the first time since he was taken as a ward/hostage by Eddard Stark after Theon's father Lord Balon Greyjoy lost his rebellion against King Robert.
Theon's desire to prove himself to his father leads him to turn against the Starks and capture Winterfell.
3. Ser Lancel
Answer: Lannister
Lancel Lannister is a nephew of Lord Tywin Lannister, the eldest son of Tywin's brother Kevan. This makes Lancel first cousin to Cersei, Jaime and Tyrion. When the series began, young Lancel was a squire to King Robert. He was later knighted by Cersei for his role in the scheme that led to Robert's death.
4. The Blackfish
Answer: Tully
The Blackfish is Ser Brynden Tully, paternal uncle to Catelyn Stark. When the series began, Ser Brynden was serving House Arryn, Lady Lysa Arryn being another niece of his. In "A Game of Thrones", he leaves Lysa's service to join his great-nephew Robb Stark in his war effort.
His nickname, the Blackfish, refers to his being the "black sheep" of the Tully family, whose sigil includes a trout.
5. Lady Lynesse
Answer: Mormont
Lynesse, born into House Hightower, was the second wife of Jorah Mormont. She is described to be very beautiful; Jorah tells Daenerys that she looks like Lynesse. Unhappy with the life her husband was able to provide for her, Lynesse eventually left him. Jorah tells the tale of their marriage to Daenerys in "A Clash of Kings".
6. Golden rose
Answer: Tyrell
A golden rose on a green field is the sigil of House Tyrell, who occupy seat Highgarden. The young daughter of the house, Margaery, is used to join the Tyrells through marriage to contenders for the Iron Throne.
7. Septa Mordane
Answer: Stark
Septa Mordane is in the service of House Stark in "A Game of Thrones". She is somewhat of a governess for Sansa and Arya. She accompanies the Starks to King's Landing when Ned becomes the King's Hand in order to continue teaching and keeping charge of the girls. She is one of the unfortunate victims of Ned's household who is killed when the Lannisters proclaim Ned a traitor.
8. Rainbow Guard
Answer: Baratheon
The Rainbow Guard are associated with the Renly portion of House Baratheon. When his brother King Robert dies suddenly, Renly declares himself to be the new king even though there is another brother older than he and Robert's presumed son has already taken the throne. The king is served by the Kingsguard, so Renly founded his Rainbow Guard with Ser Loras Tyrell as the commander.
The rainbow is a symbol of the Faith of the Seven, a religion widely practiced in Westeros. The Seven are also known as the new gods.
9. Lady Joanna
Answer: Lannister
Joanna was the wife (and first cousin) of Tywin Lannister, and mother of Cersei, Jaime and Tyrion. She died birthing Tyrion, which is one of the reasons Tywin always resented and even loathed his youngest child (in addition to him being a dwarf).
Deceased long before the story begins in "A Game of Thrones", Joanna is first mentioned by name in "A Storm of Swords".
10. Grey Wind
Answer: Stark
At the beginning of "A Game of Thrones", a litter of direwolf pups are found by the Starks, one for each of the Stark children - and an extra for the illegitimate Jon Snow. Robb names his wolf Grey Wind. The wolf goes with Robb on his war campaign, and unfortunately is killed alongside his master in "A Storm of Swords".
Sansa and Arya's female wolves are named Lady and Nymeria. Bran and Rickon name theirs Summer and Shaggydog respectively, and Jon's is Ghost.
