Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Rose's original name?

Answer: Margaret Rose Nolan

Rose Nolan was born as Margret Rose Nolan, but later changed her name to Rose Nolan at Ellis Island. She did that because it sounded more American and she felt a new life deserved a new name.
2. What offensive name was Rose called when she tried to get a job at the shoe factory?

Answer: Greenhorn

After the man called Rose a greenhorn, she ran from the store all the way back to her house crying. A greenhorn is a person who is inexperienced to a new thing/concept or way of life.
3. How did the Nolan family escape from Ellis Island?

Answer: They pretended to be with another family

Ma pretended to be a relative already staying in America and acted like she was with the other family. Rose and Maureen went along with it. It almost didn't work when the guard closed the gate to the ferry. Luckily Rose then said "Our dear Uncle ... We mustn't be separated."
4. What disease did baby Joseph have?

Answer: Trachoma

Joseph's trachoma (an eye disease) kept him from coming to America. This resulted in Pa having to go back to Ireland.
5. What relative did the Nolans stay with when they first arrived in America?

Answer: Uncle Patrick

Uncle Patrick, Pa's brother, at first didn't know who the Nolans were. This was because mail took weeks to get from Ireland to America. Rose and Maureen (Rose's little sister) stayed with Uncle Patrick until she moved in with a different family.
6. What were the shops that Rose worked at called?

Answer: Sweat Shops

Sweat shops are low quality, cheap shops that hire women, often immigrants from other countries, to work with very low pay. The one that Rose worked at produced fake flowers.
7. Who gave Rose a room to rent?

Answer: Mr. Garoff

At first they only planned to stay for a night, but Mr. Garoff and Gussie Garoff were kind enough to let Rose and Maureen (Rose's little sister) stay.
8. What did Gussie do that made her different from the other girls?

Answer: She worked with the union

Gussie worked with the Union to help get equal rights and pay for women. Gussie also did not like to go to movies or do many things that were considered "fun."
9. What happened on March 25, 1911?

Answer: The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire was a real event that killed one hundred forty six workers and was easily preventable if the owners had cared about fire safety. The fire exits were rusted, doors were locked and the elevator was not a safe exit. In the book, Rose Nolan and Gussie Garoff both worked at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. Gussie was killed by the fire.
10. What happened to Maureen during the Shirtwaist Factory fire?

Answer: She made it out of the fire

College students brought a ladder and went up to the building next to the factory. They put the ladder across the buildings bringing people over. Maureen was one of the lucky ones who got out this way.
