Tom Robinson is an African-American character from the book who is accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. Atticus Finch defends him, trying to get people to believe his innocence. He is found guilty and sent to prison where he is shot and killed by security guards who claim he was trying to get away.

Reverend Sykes is the head of the church that Tom and his family go to. Tom has a wife named Helen and three children. When Helen is out of work, Sykes tries to help her.
