Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following places did Scarlett not visit in Hong Kong?

Answer: Mount Etna

Mt Etna is located on the island of Sicily, and is "the largest active volcano in Europe."

In chapter seventeen, Scarlett "took the Star Ferry to Kowloon and back again... She visited temples and markets and went shopping and did everything to persuade herself that she was having a good time."

2. Which of the following is *not* a reason why Scarlett is down in the dumps?

Answer: She's too busy

No matter how many activities she crams into her day, it makes no difference:

"She was miserable... For a start, she was missing her friends, particularly Aidan. She had tried texting him, but the atmosphere seemed to be interfering with the signal and she got nothing back. She tried to call her mother in Australia, but Vanessa Adams was away on a trip. Her secretary said that she would call Scarlett back, but she never did."

And as if to make matters worse, Scarlett finds her father's passport still in the apartment. So where is he? Is he really in China, as the chairman asserts?
3. Which of the following is *not* a reason for Scarlett's growing dread?

Answer: The beautiful sceenery

Any attraction Hong Kong may have is lost on Scarlett as she makes note of the pitiful conditions around her:

"First of all, there were the crowds-the people in the street... Nobody showed any expression. They walked like robots, all of them moving at the same pace, avoiding each other's eyes."

The "pollution," as Audrey Cheng called it in an earlier chapter, is a "strange, gray mist" that covers all surfaces and seems "to be getting thicker, darker, changing color... It drained the color from the streets and even transformed the skyscrapers."

Then, there was the apartment complex, Wisdom Court:

"There were no sounds coming from the other flats, no doors slamming or babies crying. No cars ever pulled up. No smells of cooking or cleaning ever wafted up from the other floors."

The one and only time Scarlett asked Mrs. Cheng about the building's tenants, she was fed a bunch of nonsense:

"'Where is everybody?' 'What do you mean, Scarlett?' 'We're on our own in this building aren't we? There's nobody else in this building?' 'Of course there are other people here... They're just busy. People in Hong Kong have very busy lives.' 'But I haven't seen anybody. There's nobody else on this floor.' 'Some of the apartments are being redecorated."'
4. Does Audrey Cheng drive Scarlett to Wan Chai?

Answer: No

Karl's the designated driver, the same as every other time Mrs. Cheng takes Scarlett "sightseeing":

"The next day, Mrs. Cheng took her to a market in an area known as the Wan Chai. As usual, Karl drove them. By now, Scarlett had gotten used to the fact that he accompanied them everywhere and never spoke. She even wondered if he was able to."
5. At the market, Scarlett is horrified by what she finds there, but one thing stands out. What is it?

Answer: A whole fish that's been cut in half

It is the fish because Scarlett "could see its internal organs beating."

As if that wasn't gruesome enough, Audrey Cheng remarked, '"Fresh!'

The first stand is the one with the chickens:

"She saw dozens of live chickens trapped in tiny cages and - next to them - dead ones, beaten utterly flat and piled up like deformed pancakes ... Scarlett wondered how long she could stay in Hong Kong without becoming a vegetarian."
6. What happened to the butcher?

Answer: He cut his left hand

He wasn't paying attention to the meat he was cutting, so the blade dug into his own flesh:

"He was chopping up a joint of meat with a small axe... On the third blow, the butcher missed the meat and hit his own left hand. She [Scarlett] actually saw the metal cut diagonally into the flesh at the wrist, almost completely severing his thumb as well."

The worst of it, though, was that "He was so interested in Scarlett that he hadn't noticed what he'd done."

The man who was trampled was in an earlier chapter; he'd been attempting to get a message to Scarlett.
7. The first thing Scarlet does after dinner is read a book.

Answer: False

Actually, she turns on the TV and watches "a rerun of an old British comedy. It didn't make her laugh, but at least it reminded her of home."
8. What does the abbreviation SCAR stand for?

Answer: Scarlett

The four letters are the beginning of Scarlett's name, and signify that someone is trying to contact her without attracting the 'Old Ones' attention.
After watching the comic program, Scarlett wanders over to the window:

"Hong Kong by night was even more stunning than it was by day. The windows were ablaze-thousands of them-and all the skyscrapers used light in different ways. Some seemed to be cut into strange shapes by great slices of white neon. Others changed color, going from green to blue to mauve as if by some sort of electronic magic. And quite a few of them carried television screens so huge that they could be read all the way across the harbor... One such building was directly opposite her. As she gazed out, thinking about the butcher, thinking about the still-live fish that had been cut in half, she found herself being drawn almost hypnotically toward the building. It must have belonged to some sort of bank or financial center-the screen was displaying the performance of stocks and shares. But even as Scarlett watched, the long lists of numbers were wiped from left to right and replaced by four letters in burning gold."

When four more letters appeared, spelling out the rest of Scarlett's name, she realized someone was trying to communicate with her:

"The two blocks had formed her name, and now they were flashing at her as if trying to attract her attention. She stood at the window, not quite believing what she was seeing. ... A few seconds later, the screen changed. Now it had turned white, and the message it was displaying read: PG70 ... Scarlett waited, hoping that the sign would change a third time and tell her something more-but nothing happened. It seemed to have frozen. "Then, abruptly, it went black, as if someone had deliberately turned it off."
9. Which of the following books does Scarlett read last?

Answer: Guide book

She figures the book might help her decode the message.

Realizing that "PG 70" meant "PAGE 70," Scarlett selects a book "off the shelf at random. Sure enough, page seventy took her to a fascinating description of the way Paris had been laid out in the nineteenth century."

Next came the dictionary, but that yielded no clues either.

The phone book was only considered as an option, but "then she remembered. There had been one book that she hadn't packed but that had turned up mysteriously in her luggage. The guide to Hong Kong and Macao."
10. Who or what is Tin Hau?

Answer: Goddess of the Sea

It is also the name of a temple.
