Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The treacherous and weaselly Freys occupy a strategically important stronghold between the north and the south. What is the name of this fortress?

Answer: the Twins

The Twins are actually two castles, one on either side of the Trident, with a bridge between them. It is the only place in the Neck where a large force can cross the river. Walder Frey uses his strategic location to demand concessions from Robb Stark when he needs to move his army southward.
2. There are three main tributaries of the Trident. Name them.

Answer: the Green, the Blue, and the Red

Many of the battles Robb Stark won were here in the Riverlands. His mother, Catelyn, was a Tully of Riverun, and her childhood home was on the Red Fork of the Trident.
3. Which of these is one of the Iron Islands, home of the Greyjoys?

Answer: Great Wyk

Old Wyk, Great Wyk, Pyke, Oakmont, Saltcliffe and Harlow are among the largest of the Iron Islands. They are rocky and barren, unfit for agriculture, so the Ironmen make their living by raiding richer lands. The Greyjoy's words are "We do not sow", meaning farm. They are a hard people with a vicious outlook towards the rest of Westeros.
4. Where do the Crannogmen live?

Answer: the marshy lands of the Neck

The Crannogmen are traditionally sworn to Winterfell. Other northeners make fun of them, calling them Frogeaters, and say that their teeth are green and moss grows under their armpits. But Meera and Jojen, the son and daughter of the lord of Greywater Watch, come to Winterfell to help Bran. Jojen has "greendreams", prophetic visions that save Brandon and his brother from being murdered.
5. What large gulf separates the North from the South of Westeros?

Answer: the Bite

The Bite cuts so deeply into the land from the east that the area to the west is called the Neck. The largest islands in the Bite are the Three Sisters. According to one account, Jon Snow's mother came from Sisterton, but earlier stories hinted that she came from Dorne.
6. Which island on the southwest tip of Westeros is famous for its wine?

Answer: the Arbor

The Arbor, home of the Redwynes, is pledged to the Tyrells of Highgarden. The climate is warm, the soil is fertile, and the grapes produce a rich, red vintage that is highly prized. Only the Dornish Gold is equally valued.
7. If someone has the last name Stone, you can assume that he/she is illegitimate and comes from which part of Westeros?

Answer: the Vale of Arryn

Each one of the Seven Kingdoms has its own name to denote bastardy. In the North, it's Snow. In Dorne, they use Sand. Storm is used in the Kingswood and around Shipwrecker Bay, Flowers in the Reach, and Rivers near the Trident.
8. Which river flows by King's Landing?

Answer: Blackwater Rush

The Mander drains the lands of the Reach, the Greenblood is in Dorne, and the Trident flows well north of the capital, emptying into the Bay of Crabs.
9. Where would you find the Isle of Faces?

Answer: in the middle of the lake called God's Eye

The Isle of Faces is sacred to the Old Gods, the ones the First Men worshipped. The isle is said to be haunted.
10. Jorah Mormont, the close advisor and confidant of Daenerys, and his father, Jeor Mormont, Lord Commander of the Knight's Watch, both hail from which cold and isolated place?

Answer: Bear Island

Both of them are sometimes referred to as "the Old Bear" because the sigil for House Mormont was a black bear. The House was pledged to Winterfell, and it was Nedd Stark who exiled Jorah for the crime of selling slaves.
11. What is the last river the Kingsroad crosses before it reaches the Wall?

Answer: the Last River

Only two freeholds are north of this river, Karbold and the Last Hearth.
12. Petyr Baelish hailed from one of four rocky peninsulas that jut out into the Narrow Sea. What are these peninsulas named?

Answer: the Fingers

Petyr was given his nickname "Littlefinger" because of his birthplace. Of course, the name was also fitting because he had his fingers in everybody's business.
13. What is the mountain range just north of the Wall?

Answer: the Frostfangs

Skirling Pass is a way through the Frostfangs, the Milkwood is a river rising in them, and Thenn is the name of a clan area in the far north.
14. Everyone has heard the idiom, "as rich as a Lannister." But why are the lands around Lannisport and Casterly Rock so valuable?

Answer: gold mines provide the wealth

The Lannisters' land is rocky and hard, but the only gold mined in Westeros comes from underneath it.
15. The land for 50 leagues south of the Wall belongs to the Black Watch. What is this area called?

Answer: the Gift

The lands were given by Bran the Builder, then added to by Queen Alysanne, in order to raise revenues for the Black Watch. At one time the territory was well populated, and its rents supported 18 castles along the Wall. But frequent raids by Wildlings caused the settlers to leave, and the resulting loss of revenue sapped the strength of the Watch. Now only three castles are manned, and they hold only a fraction of the numbers needed to defend against the Wildling threat.
