Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why does Edgar move to Duma Key?

Answer: Building site accident

A former building contractor, now highly skilled artist, Edgar was almost killed on a building site. He lost an arm, and suffered Broca's Aphasia, whereby he couldn't use correct words and grammar. He also tried, when in hospital, to choke his wife, and attacked her on other occasions.
2. Which arm did Edgar lose?

Answer: Right

This happened when the crane backed into his car. Ouch...
3. How many daughters does Edgar have?

Answer: 2

His daughters are Ilse (younger) and Melinda (older).
4. In which state is Duma Key?

Answer: Florida

'Home of the newly wed and nearly dead', referenced in the book on a couple of occasions.
5. Who owns the house which he rents?

Answer: Elizabeth Eastlake

In her mid-eighties and afflicted with Alzheimer's disease, Elizabeth inherited a number of properties and a vast amount of cash from her father.
6. What is the name of the house-owner's assistant?

Answer: Wireman

Initially afflicted by a round in his brain, deteriorating vision and seizures - Edgar eventually cures him of these by painting them gone.
7. What is the name of Edgar's anger management doll?

Answer: Reba

He named it after country & western star Reba McIntyre.
8. Edgar names his house on Duma Key 'Big Pink'. What was its original name?

Answer: Salmon Point

His upstairs room, mainly used for drawing, is named 'Little Pink', where most of the (spooky) magic occurs.
9. Edgar has his work displayed at a local art gallery.

Answer: True

Many friends and family turn up. The following consequences prove disastrous.
10. If Edgar displayed his work, does he actually bother to show up?

Answer: Yes

Though only after Wireman and Edgar's ex-wife Pam intervenes and starts arranging everything for him!
11. What does Edgar call the 'Ship of the Dead' he paints several times?

Answer: Perse

Perse is the dark force surrounding Duma Key, the one Elizabeth Eastlake called 'Noveen'.
12. Who goes to the original Eastlake House, Heron's Roost?

Answer: Edgar, Wireman and Jack Cantori

Not for the first time (and hopefully not the last), King shows his talent for creating scary situations using only words when the three 'adventurers' arrive. The lawn-jockey and the alligator? I'd have been out of there like a shot!
13. When in the house, under which stair do they find the doll Noveen?

Answer: Fourth

Edgar uses Noveen while drawing inside Heron's Roost.
14. Just before they entered the house, which of the following is still alive?

Answer: Melinda Freemantle

Ilse was drowned by Mary Ire, who then shot herself, and Dr. Kamen dropped dead of a heart attack. Mary and the doctor both had the 'dangerous' sketches/paintings Edgar had produced and sold.
15. Finally, did Edgar retrieve Elizabeth Eastlake's picnic basket himself from Duma Key?

Answer: No

It was Jack Cantori who retrieved the basket. Edgar merely uses the contents and begins to understand what happened in the past at Heron's Roost and Duma Key.

Thanks a-plenty for trying the quiz. I'll be back writing a harder (well, more detailed anyway!) quiz once I've managed to catch up with college work. Keep quizzing and rating!
