Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Edgar Freemantle arrives in a hospital. What is one of the things he yells at his wife in his delirium?

Answer: Get in the BURN, get in the CHAR!

While his wife, Pam, was watching over him, Edgar got angry that there was a chair nearby and that Pam wasn't sitting in it. So he shouted for Pam to get in the chair, although his brain was a bit fuzzy then. "It was RED!" was a line he used to remember the name of his anger-management doll, Reba. "Do the day, let the day do you!" was one of Wireman's quotes, and "Drown her to sleep" was what Ms. Eastlake said to Wireman in her last moments.
2. Edgar later stays at Lake Phalen, taken there by Kathi Green. What is Edgar's nickname for her?

Answer: The Rehab Queen

Almost everywhere that the name 'Kathi Green' is mentioned, it is followed by 'the Rehab Queen'. Obviously, Edgar's mind still needed healing time. Later on, Kathi gives Edgar a choice of islands to live in. Edgar goes for Duma Key straight away
3. Edgar arrives in a house named Salmon Point, which he calls what?

Answer: Big Pink

Little Pink is the name of Edgar's upstairs room, in which he paints (dangerous) pictures. Palm Desert is where Pam's aged parents live, and where she meets Maxwell, with whom she has an affair.
4. At Duma Key, Edgar starts drawing, and then painting. His first work of mystery was of a horizon, containing a ship. What did he call the painting?

Answer: Hello

Out of brain impulse (probably given to him by Perse), Edgar titles the painting 'Hello'. The actual ship is named Perse, and so is the spirit that wreaks havoc on the other characters. "Scoto" is the name of the art gallery that Edgar displays his work.
5. Edgar also meets Jerome Wireman. He is a man who came to Duma Key because of his loss of whom?

Answer: Wife and child

According to Wireman, he married a Mexican woman named Julia, and together they had a daughter, whom they gave to a kindergarten to care for. One unfortunate day, the baby swallowed a marble and choked to death. The kindergarten was closed down afterward.

When they phoned Julia about the incident she drove at lightning speeds to the kindergarten. On the way, she had a head-on collision with a truck, and died instantly. Wireman, stricken with grief, shot himself in the head, but the bullet missed his brain.

He described the events as "la loteria" (the lottery), and that the jackpot prize was a horrible ending.
6. Ilse, Edgar's daughter, comes to him one day with good news. She had become engaged to whom?

Answer: Carson Jones

Carson Jones is a Baptist, singing for a Baptist tour. He becomes close, a bit too close, to his singing partner, a blonde girl named Bridget. Ilse starts off claiming that she wasn't a bit jealous, which Edgar quietly doubts, but later tells Carson to make a choice between her and Bridget. (Incidentally, I used to think that Carson was a girl's name. I had to actually search up the name before I was convinced that Ilse was straight.)
7. Edgar's best paintings were a series depicting the Perse and a girl. What was this series named?

Answer: "Girl and Ship" series

There were nine paintings in the "Girl and Ship" series in total. Perse had the strongest influence in them, and through one of them instructed Mary Ire to kill both herself and Ilse. The last painting, number 9, showed the ghostly faces of Elizabeth Eastlake's dead family, lost in the undertow.
8. What was the first picture that Elizabeth Eastlake, the island owner, drew?

Answer: The horizon

The first picture that Ms. Eastlake drew was just an uncertain line, an attempt at drawing the horizon. Her second picture was slightly better, a tree in winter constructed from straight lines. The upside-down bird and Charley were all part of her later drawings.
9. Just before Ms. Eastlake's death, what does she NOT say to Wireman?

Answer: They are gone

They are GONE is the quote from the newspaper back when Ms. Eastlake was just a child. It was about the loss of Tessie and Laura, Elizabeth's twin sisters, who were lost in the wake of a ship. The Perse. Elizabeth said "Drown her to sleep", meaning that Perse should be put in freshwater to paralyze her. "The table is leaking" meant that the barrel containing Perse was breaking apart. I'm not too sure myself what "You will want to but you musn't" means.
10. In the epilogue, after Perse is defeated, what does Wireman die of?

Answer: A heart attack

Wireman went to Mexico, and Edgar said that he was going there to meet him later on. However, Wireman died of a heart attack whilst dickering for tomatoes. In the end, it was la loteria all over again. Edgar believed it was a happy ending, but we fool ourselves so much we could do it for a living.
