Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this book, Goldman continually refers to professors from a certain school who love the "original" Florinese author and his satirical comedy. What school?

Answer: Columbia

William Goldman, who really did write the original (and only) version of The Princess Bride, refers to professors from Columbia University who loved satirical Florinese writer S. Morgenstern many times. Of course, we know that there is no Florin and no Florinese writer S. Morgenstern, only William Goldman.
2. For whom did Annette the French Scullery maid work?

Answer: Duke and Duchess de Guiche

Annette was a French scullery maid for the Duke and Duchess de Guiche. The Duchess was upset because her husband was interested in Annette. So the Duchess went about finding Annette's flaw: chocolate. Like a snap, the household was like a candy store, covered in bonbons. Annette ended up marrying a pastry chef and living happily ever after.

The Duke, meanwhile, lost interest in the maid (because she got rather plump from all the chocolate) and became interested in his mother-in-law. This gave the Duchess ulcers. (Which doctors of the time called "stomache pains").
3. What are Goldman's "son"'s and "wife"'s names?

Answer: Jason and Helen

Jason was a tubby boy who Helen, the genius psychiatrist, said would become skinny when he wanted to be skinny. Helen convinced Jason to stuff his mouth when William Goldman wanted Jason to lay off a little. She reasoned that William would be unhappy no matter what but Jason could make himself and Helen happy by eating.
4. In the book, who says, "Life is pain. Anyone who says different is selling something." ?

Answer: Fezzik's mother

In the movie, this is Westley's line to Buttercup. However, in the book, the line is from Fezzik's mom to Fezzik because Fezzik does not want to wrestle.
5. Does Humperdinck tell his plot to marry Buttercup to Count Rugen?

Answer: Yes

Humperdinck tells both Count Rugen and Yellin of his plot to marry the Princess.
6. Buttercup dreams about true love and Westley. Who are the characters in her dreams?

Answer: A hag, a baby girl, a baby boy, Humperdinck, and herself

Although only one makes it into the movie, Goldman describes four dream sequences. One includes Buttercup's birth and lack of heart, two include babies "to come" of Buttercup and Westley, and one includes a hag and Buttercup's wedding. The hag dream made William Goldman "mad" when his dad "read" it because Buttercup is not supposed to marry Humperdinck.
7. What is Goldman's big realization?

Answer: Life isn't fair

Goldman is bothered for years about Buttercup and Humperdinck's dream marriage until someone says to him, "Life isn't fair" and then everything makes sense!
8. How does Goldman say Morgenstern ended The Princess Bride?

Answer: Buttercup's horse threw a shoe, Westley relapsed, Inigo's wound reopened, and Fezzik took the wrong turn

Goldman says his father ended it, "And they lived happily ever after" but S. Morgenstern ended it that Buttercup's horse threw a shoe, Fezzik took a wrong turn, Inigo's wound reopened, and Westley relapsed. Fezzik's revival of Westley, and Morgenstern's description of trees, occurs in the first chapter of Buttercup's Baby. The other ending was the ending in the movie.
9. Who is the Corsican Wizard?

Answer: A master dueler

The Corsican Wizard is the man who Yeste and Domingo Montoya saw. He was the only wizard in 100 years or something. When Inigo asked Yeste if he was ready for the 6-fingered man, Yeste answered that Inigo could never have beaten the wizard, but the wizard could never have beaten Inigo. He then says he would not like to be the 6-fingered man.
10. Where do Humperdinck and Count Rugen torture Westley?

Answer: The Zoo of Death

In the book, this is called the Zoo of Death. In the movie, it's the Pit of Despair. I prefer the Zoo of Death because there is much more, better descriptions and whatnot. The Pit of Despair had no story behind it.
11. What color is Buttercup's hair?

Answer: Autumn

Goldman refers to Buttercup's Autumn hair many times throughout the book.
12. What is the best thing in the world in this book?

Answer: Cough drops

Miracle Max says once or twice that everyone knows there's nothing better than true love, except cough drops. Then Goldman mentions it again at the end. In the movie, they replace cough drops with the mutton, lettuce, and tomato sandwich.
13. Buttercup falls in which kind of sand?

Answer: snow sand

This is not lightning, quick, or sinking. In the book, Goldman makes a point of the fact that it is snow sand because they are tiny grains that get everywhere. Remember?
14. Inigo is from where? (the town, not the country)

Answer: Arabella

Inigo is from Arabella, Spain.
15. Who is Yeste?

Answer: The man who comes to the Montoyas for the really hard sword jobs.

Yeste nurses Inigo back to health after the Count kills his father and wounds him. Yeste is a family friend who has Domingo Montoya make swords that Yeste cannot make. He tells Inigo he would not like to be the 6-fingered man.
16. Finish this line, "The dweam of wuv wapped wiffin the greater dweam of..."

Answer: evewasting west

This was what the Impressive Clergyman said to Humperdinck and Buttercp at their wedding. (He had a lisp)
17. What existed from the very beginning?

Answer: taxes

Goldman says that there has always been stew and the first dinner when the first man climbed out of the swamp was stew, but he then goes on to say that there have been taxes before there was stew even.
18. What noise do the Greeks make when Fezzik fights?

Answer: AARRRGGGH!

Greeks say AARRGGGH! Romanians, Bulgarians, etc say BOOOOOO! Indians say SSSSSS! In Greenland and Sandiki, they say Go-rilla!
19. Who was the man Ryan inherited The Revenge from?

Answer: Cummberbund

Ryan inherited this ship from Cummberbund. The real Roberts is living, retired, like a king in Patagonia.
20. When Fezzik and Inigo are in the Zoo of Death, there are a bunch of traps on the way down to Westley. What is the LAST obstacle?

Answer: spider

Goldman describes the spider in depth and then refers to Inigo as ... steps from death. Then Fezzik rams the door so Inigo is not bitten and poisoned and Inigo steps on the spider and kills it. There were king bats and a snake earlier on, and most of the doors locked behind Fezzik and Inigo.
21. In Inigo's first duel, who gets first blood?

Answer: Count Rugen

This is the duel between Count Rugen and Inigo (the first one). Count Rugen gives Inigo two large scars down his cheeks.
22. Which of these things did Inigo not do as a part of his training to become a master fencer?

Answer: Battle the Corsican Wizard (wizard in the sense of levels of fencing)

Inigo squeezed rocks, studied, practiced, and did foot exercises. At on point in Buttercup's Baby, we learn that he did a lot of sleeping and thinking, too. He never battled the Corsican Wizard because that guy's dead.
23. Of what area was Buttercup the Princess?

Answer: Hammersmith

There was dispute, as she was royalty, about Buttercup being able to marry Humperdinck. In the end, they made her Princess of one of Lotharon's little areas, a tiny deserted island called Hammersmith. Buttercup refers to this during her fight with Westley. "The Princess of Hammersmith is displeased and is thinking seriously of going home
24. After their reunion, Westley and Buttercup fight. Finish this quotation. "Oh, Westley, I didn't mean any of it! Not one single..."

Answer: syllabub

Westley knew that she meant syllable, since syllabub was a dessert, but he also knew an apology when he heard it, so he said, "I know you didn't mean it. Not one single syllabub."
25. Why does Humperdinck get so upset with Princess Noreena?

Answer: She is bald

When her hat blew off her head in the dining room, Prince Humperdinck got very upset with this Princess he was courting, and he said those five precious words, "Madam, feel free to flee!" which brought Guilder and Florin to the brink of war.
