Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Most of Poe's stories deal with the supernatural and imagination. Nevertheless, the narrator has a peculiar strategy to introduce us to some of the stories. Which strategy does he use?

Answer: The narrator tries to shows us facts instead of narrating the supernatural elements of the story

As an attempt to make readers believe in the narrator, Poe uses this strategy in a peculiar way. The majority of his stories deal with the supernatural, the imagination, mystery, doubt and madness. As the narrator tries to show us the facts, we are induced to believe in his words more easily. We can see this, for example, in "The Facts in The Case of M.Valdemar", "The Black Cat", "The Premature Burial" or "The Mesmeric Revelation".
2. Which of these female names are present in titles of Poe's poems and stories?

Answer: Berenice, Annabel Lee, Eleonora and Ligeia

"Berenice", "Eleonora" and "Ligeia" are a short stories, while "Annabel Lee" is a poem. In all these works we have a character of the same name.
3. In which stories do the poems "The Haunted Palace" and "The Conqueror Worm" appear?

Answer: "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "Ligeia"

"The Haunted Palace" appears in the short story "The Fall of the House of Usher", while "The Conqueror Worm" appears in "Ligeia". They are both written by characters in the stories: the first poem is written by Roderick Usher and the second one by Ligeia herself.
4. Which of these animals can be almost immediately identified with Poe, since some of his most famous works mention them?

Answer: Cat, Raven and Death's-head Hawkmoth

In "The Black Cat" we find Pluto, the cat who apparently is the causer of all the tragedy that befalls the narrator. In Poe's most famous poem "The Raven", we find a raven which, a bit like Pluto, seems the causer of the narrator's melancholy mood. Finally, in "The Sphinx", a tale of humour, we have a Death's-head Hawkmoth which tricks the narrator.

Moreover, all these animals are usually found in literature connected with a rather dark symbolism, representing melancholy, sadness, bad omens or mourning.
5. In which works can we find a woman that is dead or dying?

Answer: "The Sleeper", "Annabel Lee", "Ligeia" and "Eleonora"

The death of a woman is a theme present in the majority of Poe's works. Besides the ones mentioned, it can also be found, for example, in "Berenice", "The Fall of the House of Usher", "For Annie", "The Raven" or "Lenore". In one of his essays, Poe cleary states that in his opinion, the death of a beautiful woman is the most poetical topic in the world.
6. Which of these is an essay written by Poe?

Answer: The Philosophy of Composition

Both "A Predicament" and "How to Write a Blackwood Article" are short stories, while "Romance" is a poem. "The Philosophy of Composition" made its appearance in 1846, showing a theory about literary composition and using "The Raven" as an example.
7. The bell is a particular element and symbol frequently found in Poe's works. In which of these works can we find bells?

Answer: "Lenore", "The Bells" and "The Devil in the Belfry"

Bells can frequently be connected with churches, and therefore with religion. Nevertheless, in Poe's works, it is often used as a symbol which seems to be connected with mourning, melancholy or bad omens.
8. In which of these compositions can we find fairies?

Answer: The Island of the Fay

"Fay" is another word for "Fairy". Supernatural entities are often used by Poe.
In "The Raven" we have a reference to Seraphim and in both "Spirits of the Dead" and "The Haunted Palace" we have spirits, though in the latter we can also find angels.
9. In which composition can we find a deadly disease?

Answer: The Masque of the Red Death

In "The Masque of the Red Death" we are introduced to a pestilence called "Red Death". Many of Poe's works deal with the subject of disease such as, for example, "Ligeia".
10. In which of these compositions can we find a character which we can classify as mad or close to madness?

Answer: "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Fall of the House of Usher"

In "The Tell-Tale Heart" we have a narrator whose discourse is clearly a nervous and anxious one and who also states, in the beginning, that madness has not disturbed his senses but rather sharpened them.

"In The Fall of the House of Usher" the character Roderick Usher seems to slowly fall into madness as well.
