Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of Luthien's father?

Answer: Thingol

Luthien is usually associated with Beren, for a good reason. She married him, a mortal, while she was of the immortal Elf kind. Aragorn and Arwen were also married, though of unequal life spans and races. Arwen, Elrond's daughter, was only singled out by Aragorn at first, because of her likeness to Luthien.

It really is a romantic story, I recommend you read it. It is in the back of most "Return of the King" books in the appendices.
2. The song Frodo sang in "The Fellowship of the Ring", in Bree, started a whole lot of dislike of the Hobbits on the way to Rivendell. Here's the True or False - the song he sang had a strange resemblance to Little Miss Muppet.

Answer: False

Actually, no. It had a strange resemblance to another highly acclaimed nursery rhyme. The offending line was "And the cow jumped over the moon". Can you guess which one?
3. In the Order of the Istari on Arda, there are two wizards not mentioned in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy; neither in the books, nor movies. As Gandalf is (in the "Fellowship of the Ring") "the Grey", and Saruman "the White", they also have a color. They are the same color. But what color are they?

Answer: Sea Blue

The two Sea Blue wizards are not a big part of Tolkein's stories. They seem to just disappear from the writings. As far as I have read, anyway.
4. In "Return of the King", there is a messenger Sauron uses to inform Aragorn and his army of Frodo's fate while they were at the Black Gate, and to find out how much they valued him. If Sauron had succeeded in ruling Middle Earth, where would this messenger, The Mouth of Sauron as he liked to call himself, dwell?

Answer: Orthanc

He would, in fact, live in Orthanc, taking Saruman's place. Saruman had failed miserably at Helm's Deep, with overwhelming odds going for himself. With the Ents taking care of the rest, he was a goner, and no more use to Sauron.
5. Not long before entering the Paths of the Dead, some kinsmen of Aragorn (Numenoreans) came looking for him to give him some help, hope, and a standard Arwen had made for him. By what name did Arwen call Aragorn in the message she sent?

Answer: Elfstone

Riding with the Rohan royalty, the Rohan guards were, of course, very suspicious of any strangers who just happened to be traveling directly toward them in dangerous ground. Hey, I would be too! Aragorn, judging by his reaction, was very happy to see his friends.
6. What terrible natural disaster happened in 1636, killing the King of Gondor and his family?

Answer: Plague

Plagues are terrible things. Especially if they kill people. Go figure. Yes, a plague killed the King Telemnar AND his family in the sad, sad year of 1636. Oh, it did happen in the Third Age.
7. Smeagol (AKA Gollum) killed Deagol after finding the Ring in the year of 2531.

Answer: False

Smeagol was hundreds of years old when he met up with The Fellowship, and Bilbo, for that matter! The start of this part of Arda's history happened in 2463.
8. There were dragons in Arda before Smaug. (gasp!) What was the first one's name?

Answer: Glaurung

Glaurung was the first dragon mentioned in Arda, in all of Tolkien's writings that are published.
9. We are told of a terrible creature of the name Gothmog. What kind of creature is he?

Answer: Balrog

Gothmog the Balrog. Hey! It rhymes! He is one of the first "terrible creatures" found in Arda.
10. Here's a hard 'un. What name of Morgoth, given to him by Hurin, meant "The Constrainer"?

Answer: Bauglir

Many people were given names by others to demonstrate different characteristics, amazing feats, or even things they wear! Anyway, Hurin named Morgoth while Morgoth had him "chained and set in slow torment". The name makes a little more sense now, doesn't it?
