Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Mr. Baseball", Tom Selleck's character goes to Japan because a rookie, played by a real-life major leaguer, takes his first base spot. Who is that player?

Answer: Frank Thomas

In his only film appearance of any kind, Frank plays the new first baseman.
2. Which of these movies was NOT based on a book?

Answer: Bull Durham

"The Natural" was based on the novel by Bernard Malamud which itself is based on the real-life story of Eddie Waitkus, "Field of Dreams" was based on a book "Shoeless Joe" by W.P. Kinsella, and "For Love of the Game" based on the novel by Michael Shaara.
3. In "Major League", Ricky Vaughn's nemesis Haywood was portrayed by a real-life major leaguer?

Answer: True

Pete Vuckovich, a Cy Young award winning pitcher and then a pitching coach, plays the burly Yankee slugger.
4. In "Comrades of Summer", Joe Mantegna's character goes to the Soviet Union to teach a rag-tag group the American pasttime. What team was he fired from?

Answer: Seattle Mariners

As Sparky Smith, Mantegna gets fired from the M's, who go on to win the World Series, while he goes teach the Ruskies the finer points of baseball. Ultimately, his Soviet team meets the Mariners on a tour of the States.
5. In "Brewster's Millions", Richard Pryor plays a minor league pitcher named Monty Brewster. What city is his team in?

Answer: Hackensack, NJ

Monty's beloved Hackensack Bulls get new uniforms and a chance to play the New York Yankees, through him and his inheritance of $30 million.
6. In "Never Been Kissed", where on the baseball diamond does Drew Barrymore's character Josie Geller, receive her first true kiss?

Answer: Pitcher's Mound

Sam Coulson sees her article and makes it to the mound just in time.
7. In "The Natural", Robert Redford's character, Roy Hobbs, returns from a hospital stay to play in a final game for the New York Knights. In his last at bat, he breaks his famous Wonderboy bat on a foul ball. What are the words on the bat that the batboy brings him?

Answer: Savoy Special

After breaking the bat, the batboy, Bobby, comes out to get the pieces. Hobbs says to him, "Go pick me a winner, Bobby." He goes to the dugout and gets a bat that he made himself, called "Savoy Special." On the very next pitch, Hobbs homers into the lights on the right field roof to win the pennant for the Knights.
8. In "The Naked Gun", Reggie Jackson is brainwashed to kill who during a baseball game?

Answer: The Queen of England

After Frank Drebin starts a melee filling in for the home plate umpire, Reggie comes in from right field to second base where he picks up a gun from underneath the base and goes to the Queen's box to attempt to kill her.
9. In "Field of Dreams", what ballpark does James Earl Jones' character, Terrance Mann, go to as a youngster growing up?

Answer: Ebbets Field

Mann grew up a Dodgers fan and would attend games at Ebbets Field until 1957, when the Dodgers left Brooklyn for LA. He held a grudge against baseball for allowing the Dodgers to leave.
10. In "For Love of the Game", how should the final out of the game be scored (numbers represent positions in the field 1=Pitcher, 3=First Baseman, and 6=Shortstop)?

Answer: 1-6-3

Even though the shortstop makes the throw to first, the ball first glances off of pitcher Billy Chapel's glove and, although Chapel does not throw it or intend it to go to the shortstop, he gets credit for a portion of the out. So the scoring goes 1 (pitcher) to 6(shortstop) to 3 (first baseman).

However, the way that the play is portrayed in the movie, the player would've most likely been safe!
