Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (1999) A nine-year-old boy can see dead people.

Answer: The Sixth Sense

Although it won none, "Sixth Sense" was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Shyamalan, and Best Original Screenplay. Haley Joel Osment and Toni Collette got supporting actor nominations and M. Knight Shyamalan got a big boost in his directing career.
2. (1995) Mel Gibson wearing a kilt stands on his head.

Answer: Braveheart

The Mel Gibson epic saga of William Wallace is a bloody affair but was nominated for ten Academy Awards and winning five including Best Picture. Not a film for the faint of heart, it is intense with few comic interludes such as this scene.
3. (1981) Christopher Walken dances in a bar and does a strip tease.

Answer: Pennies from Heaven

"Pennies from Heaven" was a disappointment to viewers who expected Steve Martin to play the loveable guy of "The Jerk" (1979) but got a downbeat dark musical instead. The film has been raised in stature since. Walken's cameo role revealed his talented song and dance side.
4. (1968) An astronaut finds the Statue of Liberty in deplorable condition.

Answer: Planet of the Apes

Charlton Heston plays the astronaut who believes he is on a new planet dominated by apes but finds at the end this is Earth. Several fine actors appear in the film such as Kim Hunter, Roddy McDowell, and Maurice Evans, but are seen only with heavy make-up as apes. The film had several sequels and television series.
5. (1992) An Irish member of the IRA finds his love is a man, not a woman.

Answer: The Crying Game

This film broke barriers at the time as people have since grown accustomed to the concepts of gay marriage, transgender, and other sexual issues. There were Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Stephen Rea, Best Supporting Actor for Jaye Davidson as "Dil" and for screenplay.
6. (1939) The heroine makes a dress out of green drapes.

Answer: Gone with the Wind

Scarlett O'Hara (Vivian Liegh) finds that the Civil War has brought her plantation of Tara to poverty. The only way to recapture the heart of Rhett Butler is to look her best hence the dusty drapes become a ball gown.
7. (1941) Brothers physically confront an abusive teacher.

Answer: How Green Was My Valley

"How Green Was My Valley" was the story of a Welsh coal mining town through its glory years and into a time of strife when the comfortable life style begins to erode. When the younger son Huw (Roddy McDowell) is teased by his classmates and his teacher, they teach Huw to defend himself and also give a boxing lesson to the teacher Mr. Jonas to the delight of all the students.
8. (1944) A mother has sextuplets; father unknown.

Answer: The Miracle of Morgan's Creek

Betty Hutton, while intoxicated, marries a soldier but doesn't remember his name and finds herself pregnant. After the birth, a confused Eddie Bracken is enlisted as the father. No doubt censors in 1944 had their hands full with this one.
9. (1951) Klaatu barada nikto.

Answer: The Day the Earth Stood Still

"Klaatu barada nikto" became a catch phrase after this film was released; one doesn't hear it much any more but a lot of movie-goers remember it. A man from outer space arrives to tell the Earth to change its ways or disaster awaits but his message falls on deaf ears.

In the context of the film "Klaatu barada nikto" means that if he is harmed, he should be returned to his space ship. As a catch phrase it generally means "save me from this".
10. (1938) Laurel and Hardy meet a gorilla while delivering a piano on a rope suspension bridge.

Answer: Swiss Miss

The film is a piece of 1930s fluff but it contains one of Laurel and Hardy's funniest scenes. If trying to move a piano over a rope bridge between two mountains isn't enough, they meet a gorilla too. Worth checking out on YouTube.
