Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these was an Italian horror film starring Christopher Lee?

Answer: What?, or The Body and the Whip

Lee said this was the best of his Italian films. He was probably right! The other films all star Lee, but they are not Italian.
2. In which film did Lee portray the notorious Judge Jeffreys who sought out and burned witches on behalf of James II?

Answer: Night of the Blood Monster

This was the lousy American title given to this movie (because we're so unintellectual!). The original titles are "The Bloody Judge" or "The Witch Killer of Blackmoor." "Witchfinder General" and "The Conquerer Worm" are two titles for the same film that stars Vincent Price as another witchkiller during the time of the English Civil War. "Burn, Witch, Burn" is an excellent psychological thriller about a man who does not realize his wife is a witch.
3. In the sixties, Hammer's rival Amicus came up with their "anthology series" of films that linked several short horror stories together through the use of one unrelated central theme. Which of these films was NOT one of those?

Answer: Tales of Terror

"Tales of Terror" was made for AI by Roger Corman as part of his Poe series.
4. After the success of "Psycho" and "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?", Hammer launched a number of "psychological horror films" in the Hitchcock-Castle vein. Many fans consider these to be the best films the studios produced. Which of these was NOT one of those?

Answer: Asylum

"Asylum" was one of the Amicus films that featured a number of short stories. I consider "Paranoic" to possibly be the best film Hammer studios made. A must see! Others in the series include "Maniac", "Hysteria", "The Nanny", "Fear in the Night" and "Taste of Fear".
5. Which excellent Hammer film featured Peter Cushing as Captain Clegg, an 18th-century pirate who leads the villagers of the town they inhabit out on smuggling raids disguised as ghosts?

Answer: Night Creatures

Another must see. "Romney Marsh" was a Disney version of the same story.
6. Which of these British horror films was NOT based on a true story?

Answer: The Horrible Dr. Orloff

"The Stranglers" was a true account of a ruthless religious cult in India. "Mania" was based on the graverobbing exploits of Burke and Hare. The entire Dracula legend comes from both Vlad the Impaler, and this woman "Countess Dracula" who thought she could stay young by bathing in virgin's blood.
7. Which film did NOT feature a young Donald Sutherland?

Answer: Straitjacket

In "Castle of the Living Dead" he played two parts, a soldier and an old woman!
8. Which film did NOT feature both Christopher Lee AND Peter Cushing?

Answer: The Devil Rides Out

How cool is it that Cushing starred in the first "Star Wars" movie to come out in 77, and Lee starred in the 2002 "Attack of the Clones"?
9. Which of these was NOT part of Hammer's "Lesbian Vampire Trilogy" about Count Karnstein and based on the book "Camilla".

Answer: Daughters of Darkness

"Daughters of Darkness" or "The Promise of Red Lips" is a French-Belgian-German lesbian vampire film starring French actress Delphine Seyrig.
10. Which Dracula film did NOT star Christopher Lee?

Answer: The Brides of Dracula

"The Brides of Dracula" was made during a period when Lee refused to play the count for fear of being typecast. "Count Dracula" is a German film by atrocious horror director Jesus Franco in which Lee reprised his roll as the count in one of the screen versions that comes extremely close to the original book. Lee also played the Count in the non-Hammer films "My Uncle Was a Vampire" and "Dracula and Son".
