Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The phrase 'Here lies the broken bones of L. B. Jeffries' can be found on a leg cast in which of the following Hitchcock films?

Answer: Rear Window

Fans of the great Hitch probably will have recognized the phrase immediately, especially considering what a prominent role the leg cast worn by actor Jimmy Stewart plays in the film. The Stewart character, L. B. Jeffries, is a photo-journalist who has been injured while taking photos during an auto race. Confined to his full leg cast, he spends six weeks in his apartment with nothing better to do than observe the neighborhood outside his rear window. In the process, he and his girlfriend Lisa (played by Grace Kelly) get involved in a wonderful murder mystery.
2. In the film 'The Shining', the young boy Danny Torrence repeatedly says two words that when spelled backwards reveal a menacing term. He also writes the two words in lipstick for his mother to see. What two words are these?

Answer: red rum

In the 1980 film 'The Shining', directed by Stanley Kubrick, young Danny Lloyd plays Danny Torrance, a boy who has an unusual ability to see both the future and the past, and to read people's minds. In one scene, he frightens his oft-frightened mother Wendy (portrayed by Shelley Duvall) by warning her of his father Jack's (Jack Nicholson) plan to murder the both of them. Danny writes the words 'red rum' on a wall, and his mother sees them in a mirror as 'murder'.
3. In the Spike Lee film 'Do the Right Thing', one prominent character named Radio Raheem has a pair of full knuckle rings that bear what two opposite words?

Answer: Love and hate

Radio Raheem, played by Bill Nunn, is one of the initiators of conflict and tension within the Brooklyn neighborhood in which this film takes place. In one scene, Radio Raheem explains the difference between love and hate to Mookie, the Spike Lee character. Love defeats hate in Raheem's mini-monologue, but later in the film Raheem is consumed by his hate, which leads to his eventual death.
4. As the 1941 classic Orson Welles' film 'Citizen Kane' closes we see the remanants of his burning childhood sled. What word can we see painted on the top of the sled?

Answer: Rosebud

Any fan of the film 'Citizen Kane' should know the magical, mystical secret behind the term 'Rosebud', the last word of Charles Foster Kane. While speculation is rampant in the film about what the term means, the viewer learns at the end that Rosebud is simply the name of Kane's childhood sled. Speculation persists about the 'real life' meaning of the term Rosebud, but I shan't go into the sordid details, leaving such investigations up to those intrepid few among you who wish to venture out on your own.
5. 'The Wizard of Oz' is one of those rare films that remains popular amongst both adults and children. In one scene in that 1939 film, what words does the Wicked Witch of the West 'skywrite' in order to intimidate innocent little Dorothy?

Answer: Surrender, Dorothy

Margaret Hamilton plays the scary Wicked Witch of the West (along with Miss Gulch), who relentlessly pursues Dorothy (Judy Garland), a teenage Kansan who has somehow managed to enter the magical land of Oz. Dorothy and her partners walk along the yellow brick road towards the emerald city of Oz, and along the way are threatened by the Witch, who skywrites the phrase 'Surrender, Dorothy' using her witch's broom.

In a deleted scene, she also skywrote 'Eat at Joes', but the director felt that such advertisements would not be appropriate. (Just a joke!)
6. In the movie 'Animal House', released in 1978, the John Belushi character Bluto Blutarsky wears a shirt that has become a fundamental part of American college culture. What one word appears on this shirt?

Answer: College

John Belushi's navy blue sweatshirt with the motto 'college' written across the chest has become the stuff of legend on college campuses across the United States. The name of the college that Bluto Blutarsky attends in the film 'Animal House' is Faber College, an institution at which he carries the enviable grade point average of 0.000.
7. In the John Hughes' film 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' from 1986, a certain message can be found over and over again in the written form throughout the picture. What is this plaintive two-word note?

Answer: Save Ferris

You can find the words 'Save Ferris' at several locations in the film, including on a water tower and on a Wrigley Field billboard. Also in the film, the kids at Ferris' high school promote a 'Save Ferris' campaign, and actually collect some money to go towards Ferris' liver transplant (not that he actually needs one.)
8. This film of the 1970s includes no opening or closing credits, and the film title appears only in the form of graffiti on a wall in the latter half of the picture. Which of these movies fits that description?

Answer: Apocalypse Now

'Apocalypse Now' is a film about one soldier's journey up the Mekong River and into the deepest, darkest reaches of Cambodia. His goal, to find and kill a man they call Colonel Kurtz.

During the Cambodia scenes, you can espy the words 'Apocalypse Now' on the wall of a temple complex. In the 70 mm version of the film, this is the only appearance of the title, and there are no other credits. The film was based roughly on the book 'Heart of Darkness' by Joseph Conrad, and features spoken poetry from T. S. Eliot (from 'The Hollow Men', specifically). I could go on and on, really...the trivia possibilities for this film are endless.
9. In the 1991 film 'Terminator II: Judgement Day', what are the two words that Sarah Connor carves into a picnic table in Mexico?

Answer: No fate

This two word phrase is something of a motto for the Sarah Connor character. She derives it from the Reese (Michael Biehn) character in the first 'Terminator' film. He delivers a message to Sarah from her son (in the future) that goes, 'There is no fate but what we make for ourselves'.

In the second film, she carves this two word message while gathering weapons in Mexico. In the less-than-stellar third film 'Terminator III: Rise of the Machines' her tombstone includes this line as its epitaph.
10. The phrase 'Follow the White Rabbit' is a phrase you will find on a computer screen near the beginning of which film?

Answer: The Matrix

In the 1999 film 'The Matrix', the Alice in Wonderland theme is fully exploited. The story of this film revolves around a man named Thomas Anderson who knows that, in this reality, something just isn't right. He is provided a pill by a mysterious man named Morpheus, and is told that once he pops the capsule he will get to 'see how far the rabbit hole goes'. I will leave it to you to see the film (if you haven't already).
