Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the movie, where does this movie take place?

Answer: New York City

We open with actress Ann Darrow, who has recently lost her job, performing at the local theatre and Carl Denham, a director who needs a leading lady to star in his latest film. The two cross paths and Carl offers Ann the role. She initially turns him down, but changes her mind when Carl mentions that Jack Driscoll, her favorite writer, is writing the movie's script. Ann arrives on the ship that will take them to their location, as Carl finds Jack on the ship. Jack hasn't written the full script and isn't coming on the voyage, so Carl stalls him long enough for the ship to leave, starting off their adventure. The moviemakers did an excellent job of making it look like New York as it was back in 1933, which is the year the movie takes place.
2. What is the name of the ship that the characters sail in?

Answer: The Venture

Everybody thinks that they are going to Singapore to shoot a movie. Carl Denham is shooting a movie alright, but not in Singapore. He is trying to find an island that has previously been obscured from "official" discovery as a legend. The only one who knows that they are not going to Singapore initially is the captain of The Venture, Captain Englehorn. Carl instructs him to sail in a direction in which there is nothing on the map for thousands of miles.

He later tells Jack the truth, and is overheard by Jimmy, who then informs the rest of the crew. The Gotengo is actually a submarine/airship from the Japanese movies "Atragon" and "Godzilla: Final Wars" - and The Monkey! Hah! Now that would have been interesting...
3. What is the name of the island that the characters visit?

Answer: Skull Island

Carl Denham wants to go to Skull Island to shoot the world's greatest movie. He doesn't exactly know what it's going to be about himself; he just plans to film whatever is there and combine it in some fashion with the drama-style scenes they have already filmed on the ship.

These scenes seem to involve Ann's and Bruce Baxter's characters falling in love over time before reaching the island. Ironically this is precisely what is happening in the meantime between Jack and Ann in real life. Though I just thought up the names Dinosaur Island and Gorilla Island, Monster Island is the name of the island in the "Godzilla" movies.

In the original movie, there is actually a rock formation on the island's main mountain that looks like a skull. There is nothing of the sort in this version, unfortunately. That would have been cool.
4. What does Carl Denham do when he sees the first islander?

Answer: He offers her some chocolate.

When the native just stands there, Carl tries to force the chocolate into her hand to show her that it's a gift. She responds by shrieking at him loudly during a struggle between them and alerting the other islanders to their presence.
If you look closely, you can see the chocolate is a Nestle's bar. Hershey's chocolate wasn't invented back then, so it is historically wise of the filmmakers to make it the now less popular brand.
5. What do the islanders do with Ann?

Answer: They offer her up as a human sacrifice.

The sacrifice is to King Kong, a twenty-five foot gorilla. However, Kong does not kill Ann as he usually does with his sacrifices, and eventually takes a role as her protector.
The "trading her for their own women" part is actually in the first film, though they kidnap her and do the attempted sacrifice after the other characters refuse.
6. What are the creatures that attack the stampeding Brontosaurs called?

Answer: Venatosaurus

The Venatosaurs are actually what cause the Brontosaurs to stampede in the first place. They kill four of the group of not-so-lucky explorers either by eating them or because they are crushed by the panicked Brontosaurs.
Venatosaurus means "hunter-lizard" in Latin. Velociraptor and Deinonychus are real dinosaurs. I just made up the name Ceolophysoraptor, which I'm pretty sure means something along the lines of "hollow formed hunter".
7. What large creatures does King Kong fight in the jungle?

Answer: Vastatosaurus rex

Kong fights three of these dinosaurs at the same time because they want to eat Ann Darrow. He eventually manages to kill all of them.
Vastatosaurus rex means "ravager lizard king" in Latin. Tyrannosaurus rex, of course, is a real dinosaur. Gorosaurus is not a real dinosaur. It's a monster made by Toho Co. that appeared in "King Kong Escapes" and several "Godzilla" movies. V-rex is a larger fictional relative of T-rex, growing up to fifty feet long.
8. After being dumped by Kong into a deep chasm, the group of explorers is attacked by many assorted creatures. What are they?

Answer: giant bugs

After Kong dumps them into the chasm, they're swarmed by giant crickets, spiders, and lampreys. Just as it's looking like our heroes are doomed, they're rescued by some of the sailors, and one actor, Bruce Baxter who either didn't go when our group set out into the island's interior, or turned back after the Brontosaur stampede.
The sequence of the humans being attacked by giant bugs is based on a deleted scene in the original King Kong (1933) featuring a giant man-eating spider. The scene was deleted because the studio producers actually decided that it was too scary to be included!
9. What are the flying creatures that attack King Kong called?

Answer: Terapusmordax

While the thirty or so Terapusmordax attack Kong, Jack and Ann try to escape by climbing down a long vine hanging over the side of the mountain. Kong tries to pull them back up, so they jump onto a Terapusmordax and fly to safety.
A Pterodactyl actually attacks King Kong in the original movie.
Terapusmordax means "pungeant bat" in Latin because they smell bad. I made up the names Mordax rex which means "bat king" and Dinomordax which means "terrible bat".
10. What is the scientific name for the species of ape that King Kong belongs to?

Answer: Megaprimatus kong

Megaprimatus kong used to be a... well, not exactly numerous, but the next level down species of gorilla on the island. By the time our explorers get there, King Kong himself is the last of his kind, as there are no other giant gorillas on the island. This causes Kong, a social creature by instinct, to be very lonely. He is shown collecting the skeletons of what were once his family and storing them in his lair. The bones can be seen when Jack is there trying to rescue Ann.
All of the incorrect answers are actually real gorilla species with the prefix "Mega" in front of them.
