Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Thomas Gabriel was starting to get more than a little annoyed with McClane's interference and decided he needed some leverage. He instructed his computer hacker to look for McClane's daughter, Lucy. Where did they find her?

Answer: trapped in an elevator

Lucy was alone in an elevator when the power went off and had been there since. They tracked her down via her cell phone and were quite delighted at her helpless position. When they pulled open the door and reached in to help her out she asked for I.D.

They were able to produce convincing F.B.I. identification and she apologized for her wariness, explaining that her father was a policeman.
2. The terrorists' real target turned out to be a building called Woodlawn, a building that was supposed to be part of the Social Security system. What was there that Gabriel was so interested in?

Answer: Financial data was being dumped into a server farm there.

When they were in Warlock's basement, they noticed that the chilling towers for the building were working overtime. The chilling towers were used to keep the computers from overheating.
When the financial systems went under attack in Stage Two of the fire sale, information about the accumulated wealth of the country began downloading to that server farm. This was the NSA back-up system for financial information, so that true records would still exist. Having the information available in one spot made it easy pickings for Gabriel.
3. Once in the building, Farrell triggered the alarms at Woodlawn, alerting the F.B.I. about the breech. While preparing to investigate, F.B.I. Agent Bowman was apprised of exactly what was in that building, by representatives of other federal agencies. When Bowman asked why he had not known of this before, what was he told?

Answer: It was above his pay grade.

As he donned his bulletproof vest, Bowman obviously couldn't believe that that kind of information had been withheld from him during the crisis he had been dealing with all day. If the information had been shared earlier, he could have had agents in place to deal with the attempted theft.
Bowman was played by Cliff Curtis.
4. By this point Gabriel's identity was known, and Bowman asked how Gabriel knew about the secrets housed at Woodlawn. What was he told?

Answer: Gabriel was responsible for the design.

Thomas Gabriel had once worked for the government and after 9-11 he had predicted this kind of attack. He had designed this back up system for financial records. His approach to instituting other safeguards was a little too rabid and he ended up parting company with the government.
When McClane was able to confront Gabriel about what he'd done, Gabriel claimed that he had actually performed a favour for the country, in showing them how vulnerable they were, and claimed that everything he had broken could be fixed again...for a price.
5. Farrell was able to get into the room in Woodlawn where the computers were because he had written the algorithm used to bypass the the controlled access.

Answer: True

Gabriel had hired a bunch of hackers to write independent pieces of code for him, which were used at various times and places in the operation. He then had these hackers killed. This was why they were trying to kill Farrell when McLane went to pick him up.
Warlock had figured out where the algorithm would be used (based on what it was) and this was why they had taken a closer look at Woodlawn, which was when they saw the activity with the chilling towers.
We also heard Farrell comment that it was his algorithm as he punched the right buttons to gain them access.
6. After McClane started taking out some more terrorists in Woodlawn, Gabriel had his daughter Lucy speak to him, on the phone. He expected Lucy to plead with her father to stop. What did she say instead?

Answer: "Daddy now there are only five of them."

Lucy had already shown that McClane had taught her how to look after herself when she'd landed a few blows on her captors. This level-headed statement not only showed confidence in her father's ability to deal with the situation, but also gave him information he needed to know in order to succeed.
Lucy was played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
7. When Lucy and Farrell met, Lucy introduced herself as Lucy McClane. Farrell said "I thought your name was Lucy Gennero." What did Lucy reply?

Answer: "Not today."

At the beginning of the movie we saw McClane trying to speak with his daughter. Lucy was obviously angry with him and refused to have anything to do with him. He called her Lucy McClane and she corrected him, telling him that her name was Gennero. All through the movie she was referred to as Lucy Gennero.

Her acceptance of her dad's name showed how proud she was of him, and that she really did love him.
8. Gabriel put Lucy and Farrell into a cube van with a couple of his remaining henchman and took off. The huge truck carrying his command centre followed. McClane jumped on top of the truck, knocked out the driver and took his place. Who helped McClane get in touch with the F.B.I.?

Answer: Warlock

While following the truck in which his daughter was being held, McClane used the C.B. radio to contact Warlock. He had earlier commented on the old-fashioned radio in Warlock's basement, and Warlock had defensively referred to it as his last line of defense. He managed to get hold of Warlock who patched him through to the F.B.I.
9. McClane's luck finally ran out and he was shot, superficially. In extreme frustration Gabriel stood behind McClane, holding a gun to his chest and threatening to shoot if Farrell did not remove the encryption he had inserted in the downloaded data. How did McClane deal with Gabriel?

Answer: McClane grabbed the gun and shot Gabriel through his own shoulder.

Gabriel was having a hard time convincing Farrell to remove the ecryption, because Farrell knew that as soon as he did he would be killed. Gabriel had shot Farrell in the knee and threatened to shoot Lucy, and eventually McClane.
To everyone's shock, McClane reached up, grabbed the gun and shot Gabriel right through his own shoulder, killing Gabriel and only injuring himself.
10. To whom did McClane say "After all we've been through, I'd hate to have to beat you to death."?

Answer: Farrell

After it was all over, McClane approached Farrell who was having his gunshot wound treated by an EMT. Farrell asked McClane if his daughter, Lucy, had said anything about him, and McClane responded with this comment. McLane was obviously very protective of his daughter and didn't like Farrell showing interest in her. Later on, Lucy asked essentially the same thing about Farrell, showing a mutual interest.
