Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. These movies, with names that remind us of Christmas, all pretend to have settings in the USA, but one was entirely filmed in B.C. Can you guess which one?

Answer: Reindeer Games

"Reindeer Games", an action film about a group of guys who attempt a heist during the holidays, is set in Michigan, but was entirely filmed in the Vancouver and Prince George areas of B.C. Billed as an action thriller, "Reindeer Games" did not receive particularly good reviews. If you view it as an action comedy, however, it is very entertaining. It is full of characters pretending to be someone else or hiding secret agendas, impossible twists and plot turns, and hardened criminals dressing as Santa Claus to rob a casino. Now that's entertainment! "Rudy Duncan" played by Ben Affleck is smitten by his cellmate's penpal girlfriend. Fortunately for Rudy, his cellmate, Nick, dies in a prison riot. Upon release from prison, Rudy assumes Nick's identity to get the girl. Unfortunately for Rudy the girl, Ashley, is just corresponding with Nick because he worked as security in a casino, and her brother and his partners in crime want to use Nick's knowledge of the casino to help them rob it.

"Jingle All The Way" was set in Minnesota and really was filmed in the Twin Cities (St. Paul and Minneapolis) Minnesota. Some of the filming of Gimbels for "Elf", which was set in New York City, was done in Vancouver, B.C., but most of it was shot in New York City. "Noel" was set in New York City and filmed in Montreal, Quebec and New York City.

2. Although it is set in 2015 USA, this 2000 film, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, was filmed mostly in B.C. In fact, the Cloning Lab is actually the Vancouver Public Library, and the "Replacement Technologies" head-office is McMath High School in Richmond! Which movie is it?

Answer: The Sixth Day

"The Sixth Day" is a science-fiction movie set in a near-future, in which human cloning is common. Arnold's character returns home one night to find that his life has been taken over by an exact clone of himself - don't you hate when that happens? It was panned by critics as derivative (in particular, of "Blade Runner"), and its plot was seen as illogical and inconsistent. For residents of B.C., however, it is a treat being able to see their own local landmarks on film!

3. In 1980 the US Men's ice hockey team shocked the sporting world by winning the Olympic gold medal. Which B.C. alpine town put on a fresh coat of paint and became 'Lake Placid' for some of the outdoor scenes in the 1981 movie "Miracle on Ice"?

Answer: Rossland

The underdog US Men's Olympic hockey team defeated the heavily-favoured Soviet team to achieve a symbolic Cold War victory. The Americans were so weak in hockey during that time, that their victory over the "Red Machine" in hockey was seen as nothing short of a miracle. Most of the US players were college and amateur players who were inspired by Coach Herb Brooks to play the series of their lives.
Rossland, B.C. is a full-on winter town where residents play every winter sport imaginable - including hockey! The legacy left by the filming was a giant mural of winter sports on the wall of the hardware store.

4. Poor John Rambo, everyone is out to get him. He is cold and wet, feeling a bit beyond hope. Which B.C. town hosted the film crew for the movie "Rambo: First Blood" (1982)?

Answer: Hope

Sylvester Stallone plays a Vietnam war veteran who drifts into town, only to meet an unwelcoming sheriff. His clash with the sheriff escalates into a game of death through the forest, with Rambo drawing upon his Vietnam War experience to pick off his pursuers one-by-one. The lush rain forest of Golden Ears Provincial Park, near Hope B.C. in the Lower Mainland, is the setting as law enforcement personnel try to capture a highly motivated and well trained ex-commando. The movie is set in the fictional town of Hope, Washington.

5. It seems unlikely that a movie about ex-Navy Seals, who return to Afghanistan to rescue a comrade, and end up battling ancient Mongolian warriors, could possibly be filmed in British Columbia, but it happened. Do you know the four B.C. locations where "Afghan Knights" was filmed?

Answer: Hope, Kamloops, Langley, Vancouver

The beginning of "Afghan Knights" has the viewer expecting an action movie. The protagonists do, in fact, have skirmishes with both the Pakistani and Afghan military. Part way through the movie, however, the movie takes an unusual plot change when they enter a cave, which harbours the souls of ancient Mongol warriors. Needless to say, ghosts are rather difficult to battle.

Although it was not a great movie, "Afghan Knights" certainly showed the diversity of the British Columbia landscape. The opening city scenes were filmed in Vancouver and nearby Langley. Notice the background of mountains and ocean in many of these city scenes. The Afghanistan portion of the movie was filmed in the Kamloops area. This area is one of the few places in BC and Canada that is almost a desert. The Kamloops area even has rattlesnakes and prickly pear cacti. The cave scenes were mainly filmed in man made tunnels called the Othello Tunnels. These tunnels were originally built for railroads, but now have walking trails throughout them. By the way, all the locations mentioned really do exist.

6. Comedian Steve Martin stars in the 1987 movie "Roxanne". Filmed in the historic town of Nelson B.C., "Roxanne" is a modern remake of the classic tale of Cyrano de Bergerac. In his day, Cyrano was famous for his poetry and wit, but what was his obvious physical deformity?

Answer: a long nose

In "Roxanne", Steve Martin's character helps his handsome-but-dumb buddy win the love of a woman. He has the heart of a poet, but a freakishly-long nose. Cyrano, from Bergerac, probably didn't have a nose as big as Steve Martin's but he was likely just as witty (for his day). Probably the funniest scene in the movie is a 'joke duel' where Steve Martin rattles off some 20 nose jokes. Nelson's historic buildings provided a lovely backdrop for the film.

7. This 1973 cult movie was filmed in south-west Scotland. A remake was made in 2006 and filmed mainly on Bowen Island. What is the title of the movie?

Answer: The Wicker Man

Edward Woodward starred in the original film, a role in this version played by Nicholas Cage. This cult horror movie tells of a police sergeant who investigates the disappearance of a young girl on a remote Scottish Island. He is horrified by the pagan practices carried out by the locals which culminates in a ritual human sacrifice. Bowen Island is situated off Vancouver. A number of locations were looked at before it was decided to use Bowen Island as the atmospheric Summersisle. The Wicker Man Festival is held in mid July near Dundrennan in South West Scotland.

8. This is a bit of a twist on the quiz theme as this movie pretends to be partly filmed in BC, but is entirely filmed in the USA. The movie is about a retired trainer of Special Forces assassins, who agrees to find a former student who is killing people in the Oregon wilderness. What movie is it?

Answer: The Hunted

This movie stars Tommy Lee Jones as L. T. Bonham, a man who trains skilled assassins for the US Special Forces. He is contacted at his retirement cabin, in what is supposedly British Columbia, to help track down a former student who has gone on a killing spree. The movie is primarily filmed in Oregon, USA with some scenes shot in Washington state.

9. Betty White is hot! In 1999 she starred in the monster-crocodile version of "Jaws". Do you know the name the movie with a 'lake' title that had outdoor scenes filmed at Shawnigan Lake, Buntzen Lake and Hayward Lake, B.C.?

Answer: Lake Placid

Okay, Betty plays a small part, but the monster-croc is big. As you can well imagine, the croc attacks and terrorizes a sleepy resort community. Terrorized, the citizens of this small town in New York state are afraid to swim in the lake lest they be suddenly eaten. I guess the beautiful B.C. lakes were chosen to provide a calming juxtaposition for the fury lurking beneath the waters.

10. Megan Fox's attempt to break free of her "Transformers" type-casting got off to a rocky start with this 2009 box-office dud. She plays a flesh-eating succubus who terrorizes an American town, although (you guessed it) many of the scenes were filmed in B.C. What film is it?

Answer: Jennifer's Body

Fox plays a popular high-school student who is never quite the same, after leaving a party with some strange guys. Her friend senses something is not quite right when people start turning up dead. Check out the high-school scenes in particular -- they were filmed at Vancouver Technical Secondary and University Hill Secondary. Also, many park scenes were filmed in Burnaby Park.
