Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Now we're being followed by ______. Never heard of that before." What is the missing word?

Answer: rocks

This memorable quote of the loveable Captain was seen in "At World's End".

Jack Sparrow says this whilst he is trapped in Davey Jones' Locker, with very little hope of getting out. At this point, he appears to be going slightly mad. He is having hallucinations of multiple versions of himself, and does not appear to be in good shape. He jumps off of his ship, sees a rock, walks a little way, and then turns around to discover that the rock has seemingly followed him. The "rocks" were in fact odd looking little crabs, which actually ended up helping carry him and the Black Pearl back into the ocean.

These crabs were also what Tia Dalma/Calypso turned into when she was released from human form.
2. "You know, for having such a bleak outlook on pirates you are well on your way to becoming one." Jack says this to Will. What is NOT something that Jack mentions that Will has done which makes him "well on his way to becoming a pirate"?

Answer: Raided, plundered, pillaged and otherwise pilfered his weasley black guts out

Jack Sparrow says this to Will Turner as they are sailing into Isla de Muerta in the hopes of rescuing Elizabeth in "The Curse of the Black Pearl". Will had just made a negative comment about pirates, even though he himself has recently engaged in pirate activities, even though it was just to rescue Elizabeth. The full quote is:

Jack Sparrow: "You know, for having such a bleak outlook on pirates you are well on your way to becoming one; sprung a man from jail, commandeered a ship of the fleet, sailed with a buccaneer crew out of Tortuga. And you're completely obsessed with treasure."

It is after Will replies "I am not obsessed with treasure", that we hear the somewhat "inspirational", and very true quote by Sparrow, when he says, "Not all treasure is silver and gold, mate."

The "treasure" that it is believed Jack is talking about is in fact Elizabeth Swann, the girl Will has loved since her first met her.
3. What is Jack's last line in "Dead Man's Chest"?

Answer: "Hello, beastie."

Incidentally, the last line in "Dead Man's Chest" is the only one where the closing quote is said by someone other than Captain Jack. Barbossa speaks the very last line in "Dead Man's Chest", after the rest of the crew see him come back from the dead in Tia Dalma's shack. Barbossa says this line as he comes down into the central bit of Tia Dalma's shack, eating his apple that he never got to eat in the first movie, and says, "So tell me. What's become of my ship?"

Jack's last line is "Hello, beastie." He says this as the Kraken is attacking the Black Pearl after Elizabeth handcuffed him to the ship, and he had to go down with the ship. In both the other movies, "The Curse of the Black Pearl" and "At World's End", Jack has spoken the last line of the movie, being "Drink up me hearties. Yo ho!"
4. "You seem somewhat familiar. Have I _______ you before?" Jack Sparrow says this to Will Turner at their first meeting. What is the missing word?

Answer: threatened

This quote is in "The Curse of the Black Pearl". Jack says this to Will when he is in the blacksmith's workshop, trying desperately to get his handcuffs off so he can escape from Port Royal. Will comes back to the blacksmith's workshop to find a curious looking hat and sword there (being Jack's), and he grabs a sword and holds it up, ready to fight with Jack. The full dialogue is:

Jack Sparrow: "You seem somewhat familiar. Have I threatened you before?"
Will Turner: "I make point of avoiding familiarity with pirates."
Jack Sparrow: "Ah. Well, then it would be a shame for me to put a black mark on your record."

The reason that Jack recognises Will becomes clear later on, when we learn that Jack used to know Will's father, William "Bootstrap Bill" Turner.
5. "My tremendous intuitive sense of the female creature informs me that you are troubled." Jack Sparrow says this to Elizabeth. In which movie does he say this?

Answer: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Jack Sparrow says this to her while they're onboard the Black Pearl, looking for the chest that holds Davey Jones' heart, so that they can rescue Will from Davey Jones' crew (at this point, Elizabeth is unaware of Jack's ulterior motive).

The full dialogue between Jack and Elizabeth is as follows:

Jack Sparrow: "My tremendous intuitive sense of the female creature informs me that you are troubled."
Elizabeth Swann: "I just thought I'd be married by now."
Jack Sparrow: "You know Lizzie, I am captain of a ship. And being captain of a ship, I could in fact, perform a marriage, right here. Right on this deck. Right now."
6. "Why should I sail with any of you? __________ of you have tried to kill me in the past. One of you succeeded!" According to Jack, how many people that he was talking to have tried to kill him in the past?

Answer: Four

This quote is said in "At World's End", when most of the crew from the Black Pearl have come to Davey Jones' Locker to try and rescue Jack.

At first when Jack sees them all, he believes that he's hallucinating again (after all, it wouldn't be the first time). It's only when Elizabeth appears that Jack finally believes that he's not hallucinating. He then tries to pretend that he's reluctant to sail with them, as it was actually Elizabeth who was the "one" who succeeded in killing him by handcuffing him to the Black Pearl while the krakken was attacking it.

However, in the end, Jack ends up sailing with the crew back out of Davey Jones' Locker. Don't you love it?
7. "Did no one come to save me just because they ________ me?" What is the missing word here?

Answer: missed

Aww. Shame, poor Jack. This quote is said in "At World's End", when Jack discovers that everyone (with the exception of some of the Black Pearl crew members) who came to save him really had their own agenda; Tia Dalma needed him because he is one of the nine Pirate Lords; Barbossa wanted the Black Pearl back; Elizabeth needed to ease her guilty conscience; and Will needed Jack back to rescue his father, Bootstrap Bill, from the possession of Davey Jones.

Sorry about the pathetic cryptic clue. It seemed funny at the time.
8. "I think we've all arrived at a very special place._________, ___________, ________." Jack says this to Governor Swann towards the end of "The Curse of the Black Pearl". He mentions three ways in which he believes they have advanced. Which is NOT one of these? In other words, which of the following words does NOT fit in the above quote?

Answer: Economically

As said in the question, this is said in "The Curse of the Black Pearl", just after Will rescued Jack from the hangman's noose. The above are Jack's parting words to Governor Swann, although why he says this is not incredibly clear (I'm pretty sure that Jack is aware that he revolts Governor Swann, which is possibly why). It really does seem like a load of blabbering, and doesn't really make that much sense.

To Commodore James Norrington, he says, "I was rooting for you. Know that."

To Elizabeth, he says, "It would never have worked between us, darling." We hear this line again, this time from Elizabeth, in "At World's End".

To Will, his meaningful parting line is, "Nice hat."

Jack Sparrow's final words in "The Curse of the Black Pearl" are, "Drink up me hearties. Yo ho!"
9. "I do that quite a lot. Yet people are always surprised." What, according to Jack, DOES he do "quite a lot".

Answer: Tell the truth

The following exchange took place in "Dead Man's Chest":

James Norrington: "My God. You were actually telling the truth."
Jack Sparrow: "I do that quite a lot. Yet people are always surprised."

This is just after Jack, Elizabeth and James Norrington have gone onto Isla Cruces, where Davey Jones has allegedly buried his heart in the "Dead Man's Chest", After they have dug up chest, and put their ears to it and hear Jones' heart beating, the above exchange happens.

James Norrington is very surprised to actually find the chest, along with the heart, as before, he was convinced that Jack was lying and leading them on a wild goose chase. When he expresses his feelings (ok, maybe he wasn't being very nice about it,) Jack, offended, defends himself by saying that, hard as it may be to believe, he actually DOES tell the truth fairly often.
10. "That makes you... Chart-man!" If you were to enter into Jack's way of thinking, just who exactly might "Chart-man" be?

Answer: Captain Barbossa

This quote is taken from "At World's End", just after Jack has been rescued from Davey Jones' locker, and there is now something of an argument as to who is the captain of the Black Pearl.

The following exchange happens between Jack and Barbossa, as they are both trying to give orders to the crew onboard, with Pintel throwing in his unwanted two cents' worth as well:

Captain Barbossa: "What are you doing?"
Jack Sparrow: "What are you doing?"
Captain Barbossa: "No, what are you doing?"
Jack Sparrow: "What are you doing?"
Captain Barbossa: "No, what are you doing?"
Jack Sparrow: "What are you doing? Hmm. Captain gives orders on the ship."
Captain Barbossa: "Aye, The Captain of this ship is giving orders!"
Jack Sparrow: "My ship, makes me captain!"
Captain Barbossa: "They be my charts!"
Jack Sparrow: "That makes you... Chart-man!"
Pintel: "Stow it! The both of you! That's an order! Understand?"
[Pause as the two captains throw him a stony glare]
Pintel: "Sorry, I just thought that with the Captain issue in doubt I'd just throw in my name for consideration. Sorry."

Even at the end of the movie, both men are still convinced that they are rightfully the captain of the Black Pearl.
11. Captain Barbossa: "It's not possible!" Jack Sparrow: "Not___________." What is the missing word, forming part of Captain Jack's sarcastic answer?

Answer: probable

This is said in "The Curse of the Black Pearl", when it appears that, for the second time, he has escaped from the island on which the Black Pearl crew marooned him (and in a very short space of time, at that).

Jack interrupts the ritual, in which Barbossa is going to slit Will's throat in order to lift the curse off of him and his crew. Jack has been sent in by Commodore Norrington in order to try and persuade the pirates to come out (although he does a sort of double deception... thing...)

Barbossa is shocked by the fact that Jack managed to escape from the island for a second time, and believes that it is completely impossible that Jack could ever have gotten off the island alive, to which Jack replies that it is merely "not probable".
12. "I love those moments! I like to wave at them as they pass by." What type of moments is Jack talking about?

Answer: Moments when he'll have the chance to do the right thing

This quote is in "Dead Man's Chest", when Elizabeth is trying to prove to Jack that somewhere, deep inside him (very, verrry deep) there is a good man, who is waiting for the chance to do something good.

At the end of the movie, it seems as though Jack is about to prove Elizabeth wrong, as he rows away from the Black Pearl while the Kraken is attacking it. However, thankfully his conscience gets the better of him, and he comes back to help fight. Also, at the end, he nobly (although this perhaps wasn't entirely his decision,) goes down with the Black Pearl as the Kraken chomps it, giving the rest of the crew a chance to escape.
13. Jack Sparrow: "You know, for all that pirates are clever-called, we are an unimaginative lot when it comes to naming things." Gibbs: "Like?" Jack Sparrow: "I once sailed with a geezer lost both his arms and part of his eye." Gibbs: "What did you call him?" Jack Sparrow: "_______________" What DID Jack call this terribly afflicted man?

Answer: Larry

This exchange between Jack Sparrow and Mr Gibbs takes place in "At World's End", as the crew of the Black Pearl (minus Elizabeth and Will) are heading towards Shipwreck Cove for the huge pirate gathering.

This comment presumably came up due to the fact that the pirates couldn't think of something slightly more creative than Shipwreck Cove (yep, you guessed it - a cove made up out of ships that were... well, shipwrecked!)

Whether Jack actually did know someone who was this badly afflicted with these things, I don't know. If you are reading this and are aware of the answer, do share.
14. "You smell funny!" Who is this insult of Jack's directed at?

Answer: James Norrington

We hear this rather pathetic, yet still hysterically funny, attempt at an insult/comeback in "Dead Man's Chest", when all of Jack's crew, that he is going to try and trade with Jones for his soul, are boarding the ship and James Norrington is one of them.

Jack Sparrow: "You look bloody awful. What are you doing here?"
James Norrington: "You hired me. I can't help it if your standards are lax."
Jack Sparrow: "You smell funny!"

Shortly after, they board the Black Pearl, and go out on their mission to rescue Will and give Davey Jones the other 99 souls he wanted in exchange for Jack's.
15. "Ladies, will you please shut it?! Listen to me. Yes, I lied to you. No, I don't love you. Of course it makes you look fat. I've never been to Brussels. It is pronounced "egregious". By the way, no, I've never met Pizzaro, but I love his pies. And all of this pales to utter insignificance in light of the fact that my ship is once again gone. Savvy?" What women does Jack Sparrow make the following "confessional" speech to?

Answer: Giselle and Scarlett

It is towards the end of "At World's End" that Jack Sparrow makes the following speech to Giselle and Scarlett, after they are arguing about over who would go for the first ride on Jack's ship. He is thereafter slapped by both of them (he then proceeds to slap Mr. Gibbs). He was walking down to docks with a lady on each arm, only to discover that his ship, the Black Pearl, has gone. A few moments later, we discover that it was actually Barbossa who took the ship. No problem for Jack, though. He sets off in his row boat, and this is the last we see of him in "At World's End," setting the scene for a possible sequel.

Drink up me hearties. Yo ho!
