Question 2 of 15
2. (2004) Joel Shumacher's offering of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera" was one of the most visually rich films I have ever seen. Each scene abounded with so much detail, it was possible to watch the film dozens of times, and still notice something new every time. Combine this tapestry of visual delight with amazing music, and you have a film that I could easily watch 200 times. What is the name of the young soprano who played the female lead, Christine Daae? Hint

3. (1987) Buttercup was devastated when she learned that her true love had been murdered by pirates. Years later, she reluctantly agreed to marry the prince, whom she did not love. What was the name of this delightful film? Hint

Question 4 of 15
4. (1951) Christmas isn't complete without a viewing of this timeless classic, based on the novel by Charles Dickens. Ebenezer did not realize how miserable and unhappy he was, until the ghosts of Christmas showed him a better way. I have watched this film every year for as long as I can remember. While I'm still a few years shy of 200, I'm sure that I could watch it that many times! Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (1977) George Lucas blew our socks off, and revolutionized the whole concept of special effects, when he released this movie, the first in his amazing, inter-galactic saga. The pure-hearted rebels, winning against the much larger and better-equipped Empire, epitomized everything that was good and just in our world, and reminded us that the little guy could make a huge difference. Sub-titled "A New Hope", what was the name of this incredible film?

Answer: Star Wars

I don't know what I was expecting the first time I went to see "Star Wars", but I remember being pumped full of adrenaline when I came out. I went home and ranted about it to my father so much, that the next night I saw it again with him.
The three films of the original trilogy are all movies that I could watch 200 times. In fact they are probably the movies that I have come the closest to actually watching that often. Lucas wrote the script, and cast three virtual unknowns, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill in the starring roles, and walked away with three blockbuster hits.

Answer: Emmy Rossum

Emmy Rossum was only 17 when "The Phantom" was filmed, but you would never guess her youth from her composure on film. Her two male leads, Gerard Butler as the Phantom, and Patrick Wilson as Raoul, are 17 and 13 years older than her, respectively. The three actresses named in the incorrect answers also appeared in the film.
3. (1987) Buttercup was devastated when she learned that her true love had been murdered by pirates. Years later, she reluctantly agreed to marry the prince, whom she did not love. It's a good thing that "death cannot stop true love", because Wesley was able to rescue her, when Prince Humperdinck tried to have her kidnapped and murdered. What was the name of this delightful film?

Answer: The Princess Bride

Rob Reiner directed this amazing comedy that included some very clever dialogue, and frequently repeated quotes. The ensemble cast included Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, Christopher Guest, Billy Crystal and Robin Wright-Penn, to name a few.

Answer: A Christmas Carol

Although many versions of this film have been made over the years, Alastair Sim's incredible performance as Scrooge made this one the best that I have ever seen. IMDb lists the title of this as "Scrooge", although the picture of the movie clearly shows the title as "A Christmas Carol". Brian Desmond Hurst directed.
5. (2001) "Harry Potter" mania has swept the world, and I willingly admit to being caught up in the craze. These well-written books have been faithfully transformed into delightful films that offer something for viewers of all ages. All three existing films (as of Sept. 2005) have given me hours of delight, and I anxiously await the release of the next film in the series. Who wrote the books on which these movies are based?

Answer: J.K. Rowling

Rowling has done a remarkable job of weaving a story that traces the maturation of the characters and development of plot over several volumes. Directors Chris Columbus and Alfonso Cuaron have given us faithful renderings of the books, while its stars have grown up in front of our eyes. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Robbie Coltrane, Alan Rickman and Maggie Smith were among the many stars to lend their talents to these films.
6. (1996) Based on a John Grisham novel, this powerful film examined the issues of justice and racism in the Deep South. When his young daughter was brutally raped, beaten and left for dead, Carl Lee Hailey knew too well that her attackers may have gone free. So he took the law into his own hands, and threw himself on the mercy of the court, and the skills of his white lawyer.

Answer: A Time to Kill

Joel Schumacher offered up a powerful movie, with an all-star cast, that stands up to repeated watching. Kiefer Sutherland positively reeked evil, as the red-neck who invited the KKK in to help them out, while his real life father, Donald Sutherland, played a once great lawyer, who was debarred for his activities in the civil rights movement. Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson and Matthew McConaughey also starred.
7. (2002) When Roxie shot her boyfriend, she didn't expect that she might actually hang for the crime. After all, it was Chicago, during Prohibition, and everyone was doing it. Luckily for Roxie, her lawyer was a real song and dance man, and was able to get her off for the shooting. This stunning musical took a fun look at a time and place devoted to jazz, booze, and crime.

Answer: Chicago

Rob Marshall pulled together a killer cast, consisting of Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere, Queen Latifah and John C. Reilly, and added some incredibly well-choreographed numbers that captured the feel of the era. It's another film that I have no trouble watching over and over ... maybe even 200 times!
8. (1954) In "Rear Window", James Stewart played a photographer who had been laid up with a broken leg. He spent a lot of time looking out of his apartment window, watching the goings-on of his neighbours. He soon came to believe that one of his neighbours had murdered his wife, and cut her up in the bathtub. Who directed this masterful piece of suspense?

Answer: Alfred Hitchcock

Grace Kelly, Thelma Ritter, Wendell Corey and Raymond Burr starred alongside Stewart. There were three Hitchcock films that I could watch over and over, so it was hard choosing just one. The other two Hitchcock films that I felt I could watch 200 times were "North By Northwest", and "Vertigo".
9. (2003) "Love Actually" gave us a series of inter-related peeks into the lives of different people preparing to celebrate the Christmas Holidays. While some of the stories were funny, some were sad, but all of them involved love in one of its many faces. Who played the newly elected British Prime Minister?

Answer: Hugh Grant

Each story was unique, yet a thread of commonality ran through them all, in that most of the players could be joined to each other in only one or two degrees of separation. This gave the viewer a nice mix of situations and dilemmas to sort out. Richard Curtis directed this all-star, ensemble cast that included, along with the already mentioned four actors, Bill Nighy, Emma Thompson, Kris Marshall, Keira Knightley and Laura Linney, to name a few.
10. (1992) Women were asked to do more than work in the factories during WWII, they were also asked to step up to the plate and play ball. "A League of Their Own" told the story of the first year of professional women's baseball, and all the hardships the girls faced in breaking the molds, and gaining recognition as real athletes. Who played the alcoholic coach, Jimmy Dugan, who soon learned to get past his own prejudices, and come to respect his girls as the good ball players they were?

Answer: Tom Hanks

Penny Marshall directed this poignant movie that that also starred Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell and Bill Pullman. But it was Hanks who makes the film worth watching over and over again. His performance as the crude, blustering, drunken Dugan is a definite don't miss.
11. (1994) "The Lion King" is probably the only Disney movie that I could watch 200 times, although I love them all. The amazing music for this film has a lot to do with its 'watchability', for want of a real word! Who collaborated with Tim Rice to write the songs for this amazing film?

Answer: Elton John

Elton John has had a long and successful career in the music industry. His other collaborations with Tim Rice include "The Road to El Dorado" for film, and "The Lion King" and "Aida" for stage.
I was fortunate enough to be able to see Elton John perform "Circle of Life", from "The Lion King", live. It was an amazing experience.
12. (2001) John Nash was brilliant. He had an ability to see patterns and solve mathematical problems that most could not decipher. He was also a schizophrenic who believed that he'd been conscripted by the government, to decode messages and help save the world from communism. His struggles to take control of his life, and his eventual winning of the Nobel Prize were chronicled in this beautiful film.

Answer: A Beautiful Mind

Ron Howard directed Russell Crowe to an Oscar-worthy performance (although he did not win) in this very powerful, fact-based film. The film did win 4 Oscars, however, including one for Jennifer Connelly, for her portrayal of Nash's wife, who stood by him through thick and thin.

The attendance of the real Mr. and Mrs. Nash at the Academy Awards was a testament to how faithfully Howard presented their story.
13. (1998) "Practical Magic" told us about the trials and tribulations that the Owens women faced, because of their powers in the field of witchcraft, and an ancient family curse that took the life of any man who fell in love with one of their numbers. Sisters Sally and Gillian had very different attitudes about being witches. Sally wanted nothing more than to live a normal life, and had a hard time coming to terms with who she was, while Gillian led a rather reckless life. What were the names of the actresses who played the sisters?

Answer: Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman

Sandra Bullock's frustration, as she tried so hard to live a normal life, was a large part of what made this movie so enjoyable. The eccentric behaviour of the two aunts, played by Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest, also added to the fun. Directed by Griffin Dune, the movie also starred Aidan Quinn and Goran Visnjic.
14. (1991) Evelyn Couch was not happy with her life, or with herself. Meeting Ninny Threadgoode, and hearing all about the adventures of Ruth and Idgie, and the Whistle Stop Café was like therapy for Evelyn. She became immersed in the story of their struggles to get by in Alabama in the 1920s, and found that their triumphs gave her the courage to make changes in her own life. What was the name of this inspiring movie?

Answer: Fried Green Tomatoes

Jessica Tandy's portrayal of a spunky senior reliving the days of her youth, was one of the best parts of this movie. Jon Avnet directed this heart-warming movie that also starred Kathy Bates, Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker.
15. (1989) Although I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the movies in the "Indiana Jones" series, I believe that "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", the third in the series, was the best. The interplay between Indiana, played by Harrison Ford, and his father was largely responsible for it being that much better than the others. Who played Dr. Jones Sr.?

Answer: Sean Connery

Voted Sexiest Man Alive by "People" magazine when 59 years old, Connery has come a long way since his days of polishing coffins for a living. His intelligent, but slightly inept rendering of Henry Jones Sr, and Ford's frustration at having to handle the situation with his regular swashbuckling style, while being made to feel like a child again, made for some very funny dialogue. Steven Spielberg directed this highly entertaining movie that also starred Denholm Elliott, Alison Doody, and John Rhys-Davies.
