Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This 1978 thriller stars Nick Nolte, Tuesday Weld, and Michael Moriarty. It shares its name with a wet 1970 Creedence Clearwater Revival protest song off the "Cosmo's Factory" album. And I wonder, still I wonder, what's the name of the movie and song?

Answer: Who'll Stop the Rain

In the movie, Nick Nolte is a Vietnam Vet that gets caught up in heroin trafficking and the intrigue follows from there. The movie was a mild critical and box office success.

The Creedence song was released in January 1970. It was about the Vietnam War and inequity in the USA in the late 1960s, early 1970s. It was rated number 188 on "Rolling Stone's" All-Time 500 songs list.

"Lookin' out My Back Door" and "Ooby Dooby" were also on "Cosmo's Factory".

It was featured on the movie soundtrack, though not written directly for the movie.
2. The movie was a crime thriller with Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek as South Dakota youth on a violent crime spree. It was released in 1973. The song with the same name was released as a single in 1978 off Bruce Springsteen's album "Darkness on the Edge of Town". What is the common name of the two?

Answer: Badlands

"Badlands" was the second single off the "Darkness on the Edge of Town". It didn't do great on the charts, peaking at number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA. As with many of Springsteen's songs, it was well received critically.

The movie got good critical reviews for the acting of Sheen and Spacek. An interesting bit of trivia, both of Sheen's sons, Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez, have uncredited parts as little boys standing under a lamppost.

There is a connection between the song and movie too. Both were inspired by mass murderer Charles Starkweather's 1958 killing spree.
3. The song was a cover in 1974 by the band Grand Funk Railroad off the album "All the Girls in the World Beware!!!". The movie, written by John Hughes, was released in 1987. It starred Mary Stuart Masterson, Eric Stoltz, and Lea Thompson, and dealt with teen angst amid social class differences, the usual John Hughes fare. Name the title of both.

Answer: Some Kind of Wonderful

The song was written by John Ellison, and first recorded by his group Soul Brothers Six in 1967. It didn't have much chart success. The Grand Funk version was much more successful, peaking at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA.

The movie was a classic John Hughes screenplay with the "less fortunate" high school kid being pursued by the upper class teen. Mary Stuart Masterson was a tomboy in the film, right up to her short haircut. While the movie didn't do great at the box office, it was mostly well-received by critics, including Roger Ebert.
4. This 1995 movie was about a talking shepherding pig. The movie got James Cromwell an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The song with the same name was a big hit for the progressive rock band Styx in 1979. Sonny and Cher would've been proud! What is the name of the song and movie for this question?

Answer: Babe

The movie received four Academy Award nominations, winning for Best Visual Effects. It grossed about $63 million at the box office. It spawned the sequel "Babe: Pig in the City".

The song, released in September 1979, was Styx's only US Billboard Hot 100 number one hit. It reached number six on the UK Singles chart in 1980. It was on Styx's album "Cornerstone".
5. This 1993 Jason London and Matthew McConaughey movie centered around the last day of school for Texas' teens in 1976. The title was inspired by a Led Zeppelin song of the same name. The song was on Zep's first album. After taking this quiz, you may feel the same as the title of both! What is the title of both?

Answer: Dazed and Confused

Though the movie was not initially a success at the box office, it has become sort of a cult hit. It also starred Ben Affleck and Milla Jovovich, and Renee Zellweger in an uncredited role as a girl in a blue pickup truck.

The Zeppelin song was originally written and performed by Jake Holmes in 1967. Jimmy Page was with the Yardbirds when he first performed a version of the song. Though they shared the title, Page reworked the lyrics and melody, and eventually got a separate copyright.
6. The song was off Kiss' 1976 "Destroyer" album. Kiss urged everyone to "get up, everybody's gonna move their feet". The 1999 movie was actually inspired by the Kiss song. The movie, starring James DeBello and Edward Furlong, was about four teens trying to get to a Kiss concert. You don't have to be from Motown to enjoy this movie. Name the title in common.

Answer: Detroit Rock City

The song was the basis for the movie. Kiss wrote the song after hearing of some of their fans being killed on the way to a concert of theirs in Detroit. The song was on their "Destroyer" album. Initially it was the featured A-side of the single, but the B-side song "Beth" proved more popular. So "Beth" became the A-side and peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100.

The movie was neither a critical nor a commercial success, but has become a cult classic, especially among Kiss' fans.
7. The movie was the first of a successful super hero franchise. The 2008 movie, starring Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, is based on a Marvel Comics' character. The movie also starred Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges, and Terrence Howard. It was a huge box office success, grossing over $500 million worldwide. It also received overall good reviews, even making Roger Ebert's and Richard Corliss' end of the year lists for the top movies of 2008.

Each member of the band Black Sabbath received writing credit for the song; Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward. In 2000, about 30 years after initial release, a live version of the song won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance. It was ranked number 317 on "Rolling Stone's" All-Time 500 list.
8. A 1975 mystery film directed by Arthur Penn, it starred Gene Hackman and Jennifer Warren. Hackman is a former football player, now a detective, looking for a missing person. The song was a 1976 single by Bob Seger off an album of the same name. Seger sang he was "working on mysteries without any clues, workin' on our...". What is this common name?

Answer: Night Moves

The film also starred Jennifer Warren and Susan Clark. It also had early film appearances by Melanie Griffith and James Woods. The movie got and still gets positive critical reviews. It was, however, not a box office success. There was another non-related movie of the same name released in 2014.

The song was written and sung by Bob Seger. The song took Bob Seger from a Midwestern USA star to a national star, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100. It was voted the number one single of 1977 by "Rolling Stone" magazine, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame named it one of the "500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll".
9. Kevin Costner, Robin Wright, and Paul Newman starred in this 1999 romantic drama. A love letter was found in a container on the beach and starts things moving. The song was off the Police's second album "Regatta de Blanc". Sting sang "I'll send an SOS to the world" by the means mentioned in the title. What was the title of both?

Answer: Message in a Bottle

The movie starts rolling when Wright finds a tragic love letter in a bottle that's washed up on the beach. The quest for the author and the ramifications of that quest is the focus of the film. The film did fair at the box office, number 42 for the year, with about $52 million gross according to Box Office Mojo.

The song was the Police's first UK number one single. It didn't do as well in the USA, only peaking at number 74 on the Billboard Hot 100.
10. Stephen King's short story "The Body" was the inspiration for this 1986 coming of age movie. It starred the late River Phoenix and Corey Feldman. The song was a 1961 hit by Ben E. King, and actually plays on the credits of the movie. So darling, darling, please name the title in common.

Answer: Stand By Me

The movie also starred Wil Wheaton and Jay O'Connell as the other two kids on a journey to find the dead body of a child. It was directed by Rob Reiner and was a critical and commercial success. The fictional town in the movie of Castle Rock inspired Reiner to name the production company he co-founded as "Castle Rock Entertainment".

The song was written by Ben E. King, along with the famous songwriting duo of Lieber and Stoller. In 1961, the song was number one for a few weeks on the Billboard R&B charts in the USA. It peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100. It recharted in 1986, due to the movie, reaching number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. 25 years between top 10 appearances!
