Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This coming of age movie stars most of the members of 'The Brat Pack' and centers around a group of recent graduates from Georgetown University. Which film?

Answer: St. Elmo's Fire (1985)

The Brat Pack consisted of Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy. The only ones missing from "St. Elmo's Fire" were Anthony Michael Hall and Molly Ringwald.

The "St. Elmo's Fire" title makes reference not only to the weather phenomenon (a bright blue or violet glow in the sky), but also to the friends' college hangout, St. Elmo's Bar. The story revolves around the group of friends as they struggle through the change from carefree, selfish college students to young adults with responsibilities.
2. Denzel Washington is a former CIA agent who fails to protect a young girl from being kidnapped. Vendetta ensues. Which film is this?

Answer: Man on Fire (2004)

Denzel Washington plays the role of John Creasy, a man struggling with his violent past in the CIA, where he worked in counterinsurgency and as an assassin. Now an alcoholic and struggling with depression, Creasy takes a job in Mexico as security for businessman Samuel Ramos, protecting his daughter Lupita (Pita).

When she is kidnapped anyway, with Creasy being grievously injured in the process, he vows to Pita's mother to kill everyone involved with the abduction.
3. Dennis Quaid plays the part of a famous rock musician in this biographical film. Which one?

Answer: Great Balls of Fire! (1989)

The film follows the life and early career of 1950s rock legend Jerry Lee Lewis. Dennis Quaid plays the starring role along with Winona Ryder as his (very young) wife, Myra. Alec Baldwin also plays a role in the film, depicting televangelist Jimmy Swaggart.

The story was based on the autobiography of the same name ("Great Balls of Fire!") written by Myra Gail Lewis, although the director (Jim McBride) admitted that the script was only loosely based on the book.
4. Clint Eastwood is in the Secret Service, and he is determined to stop an assassin from killing the current President (like he was unable to do with JFK). What film is this?

Answer: In the Line of Fire (1993)

Clint Eastwood plays the part of Frank Horrigan, an aging Secret Service agent who had been working the motorcade the day that John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. Now there is a threat against the current president (played by Jim Curley) from a former CIA assassin Mitch Leary (played by John Malkovich). Knowing his history, Leary taunts Horrigan, secure in his inevitable victory. Does Horrigan still have what it takes to stop the threat?
5. It is the 1924 Olympics, and two athletes compete to be the fastest runner in the world. Which award-winning film is this?

Answer: Chariots of Fire (1981)

"Chariots of Fire" won four of the seven Oscars for which it was nominated at the 54th Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score). Starring Ben Cross and Ian Charleson, the story follows two competitive runners as they prepare for and compete in the 1924 Olympics in Paris.

The title of the film comes from the line "Bring me my chariot of fire" from the William Blake poem "And did those feet in ancient time".
6. Dragons have free reign over the world of the future while Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale fight back. What post-apocalyptic film is this?

Answer: Reign of Fire (2002)

Shortly after the new millennium began, workers digging beneath London accidentally discovered a hibernating dragon. Twenty years later, humanity is nearly extinct, and dragons reign supreme. Christian Bale plays the part of Quinn, the leader of a community living in castle in Northumberland, while Matthew McConaughey plays Denton Van Zan, the leader of a group of American soldiers who still have the use of some technology in the fight against the dragons.
7. Based off of the second book in Stieg Larsson's "Millennium" series, this movie's Swedish title is "Flickan som lekte med elden". What is its English name?

Answer: The Girl Who Played With Fire (2009)

Noomi Rapace plays the part of Lisbeth Salander, the world class computer hacker and main character of the "Millennium series" (along with investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist). After the events of the first book/film, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", Salander is accused of murdering three people, and must use the help of Blomkvist to determine the truth of the matter.

The first film in the series, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", was released in two versions: Swedish (2009) and English (2011). Lisbeth Salander was portrayed by Rapace in the Swedish version and Rooney Mara in the English version, while the part of Mikael Blomkvist was played by Michael Nyqvist in the Swedish film, and Daniel Craig in the English version.
8. After being attacked by a rival tribe, the Ulam lose their carefully preserved fire. Three men, played by Ron Perlman, Everett McGill, and Nameer El-Kadi, are sent to find more. What is the name of this film?

Answer: Quest for Fire (1981)

"Quest for Fire" is set in the Paleolithic era of Europe, approximately 80,000 years ago. As in the novel (by J.-H. Rosny) on which the film is based, there are three species of hominids seen in the film. The main characters (the Ulam tribe) and the cannibalistic Kzamm tribe are Homo neanderthalensis (neanderthals), while the tribe that attacked them (the Wagabu tribe) at the beginning of the film are the ape-like Homo erectus.

The third species (the Ivaka tribe), also encountered by the men during their quest, are early Homo sapiens (Cro-Magnons).
9. A young wizard is forced to participate in a deadly contest he did not enter. What movie is this?

Answer: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)

"Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" is the fourth film in the franchise of eight, based on the seven-book series by J.K. Rowling.

Already famous for having survived an attack by the evil wizard Voldemort when he was a baby, Harry Potter is now in his fourth year of schooling at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This year, though, Hogwarts is hosting the Tri-Wizard Tournament; a contest between three schools of magic (Hogwarts, the Durmstrang Institute, and Beauxbatons Academy). Despite magically ensured age restrictions on the contest, someone manages to place Harry's name into the Goblet of Fire, forcing his participation.

Harry Potter was played by Daniel Radcliffe in all eight films.
10. It is the Quarter Quell, and only previously victorious tributes can be chosen from to participate this 75th year. What film is this?

Answer: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" is the second film in the series following the highly successful release of "The Hunger Games" in 2012. In a post-apocalyptic North America called Panem, The Capitol keeps tight control of the 12 districts that lost the war three-quarters of a century ago. Every year, one male and one female 'tribute' is chosen from each district to fight to the death in an arena for the entertainment of the citizens of The Capitol, but this year is special. For the 75th Annual Hunger Games, only previously victorious tributes can be drawn from to participate this time around. What that means for District 12, though, is that there are only three names to pick from: Haymitch Abernathy (who won the 50th Hunger Games), along with Peeta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen (who together won the 74th Hunger Games).

Katniss Everdeen is played by Jennifer Lawrence, Peeta Mellark by Josh Hutcherson, and Haymitch Abernathy by Woody Harrelson.
