Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In his first movie, Val Kilmer plays a singer caught up in an espionage mission to rescue a scientist from East Germany. Which film?

Answer: Top Secret! (1984)

"Top Secret!" was written and directed by the same trio that came up with 1980's "Airplane!" (David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker). In this parody combining spy movies and Elvis musicals, Val Kilmer (playing a '50s style rock star named Nick Rivers) did all the singing and dancing scenes himself.

Other notable actors making appearances included Omar Sharif, Peter Cushing and Michael Gough.
2. Adapted from a novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, what movie tells of young orphaned Mary who helps her sickly cousin Colin overcome his limitations?

Answer: The Secret Garden (1993)

Burnett's "The Secret Garden" was published in 1910/11, and has been adapted for the screen a number of times. The first was in 1919, then again in 1949, then followed by television serials in 1975 and 1987. The 1993 rendition featured Kate Maberly as Mary Lennox and Heydon Prowse as Colin Crevon. Dame Maggie Smith played the crotchety old Mrs. Medlock, winning the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress for her efforts.
3. George Lazenby made his only appearance as the inimitable James Bond in which of these films?

Answer: On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)

"On Her Majesty's Secret Service" was the sixth Bond movie, although it was based on Ian Fleming's tenth book in his series. Bond faces Ernst Savro Blofeld, head of SPECTRE (played by Telly Savalas), for the fourth time (in the movie series). He has ensconced himself in neutral Switzerland, where the British Secret Service is loathe to send agents and violate Swiss sovereignty.

Apart from being George Lazenby's only appearance as 007, this film was also singular in that Bond gets married to Diana Rigg's character (the Countess Tracy di Vicenzo). Sadly, she is killed in a drive-by shooting by Blofeld and hench(wo)man Irma Bunt.
4. In which of these sequels do we see the character Benjamin Gates kidnap the President of the United States?

Answer: National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007)

In "National Treasure: Book of Secrets", Benjamin Franklin Gates (Nicolas Cage) is willing to go to nearly any lengths in order to clear his family's name after evidence comes to light potentially implicating a Gates in the conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln in 1865.

Forced to this course of action by Mitch Wilkinson (Ed Harris), Ben Gates brings together his friends from the first movie, as well as his father (played by Jon Voight) and mother (played by Helen Mirren).

The clues that Gates follows lead them to the legendary city of gold called Cíbola, which has been hidden by presidential order (altering landmarks drastically by the creation of Mount Rushmore's presidential likenesses).
5. Which of these films is set in South Carolina in 1964 and tells the story of 14-year-old Lily Owens?

Answer: The Secret Life of Bees (2008)

Played by Dakota Fanning, Lily Owens runs away from her abusive father with Rosaleen, their African-American housekeeper, looking for her mother's (who is deceased) childhood home. They eventually find the Boatwright sisters; August (Queen Latifah), May (Sophie Okonedo) and June (Alicia Keys), who take them in to stay.

As a white girl, living with the Boatwrights in 1964 brings some racial trouble to the household, but together they get through it. When her father T-Ray comes looking for her, Lily insists on staying with the Boatwrights, and her father reluctantly agrees.
6. Is he Brantley Foster who works in the mail room, or is he Carlton Whitfield, smart young executive? In which of these movies does Michael J. Fox lead two lives?

Answer: The Secret of My Success (1987)

Fox's character Brantley Foster is a recent graduate from University, coming to New York City to begin a career when a twist of fate leaves him with no job. He is forced to take a job with his uncle's company in the mail room, but soon finds out that his uncle's business practices are less than noteworthy. Chance gives him an opportunity to occupy a vacant office and pretend to be a newly hired executive by the name of Carlton Whitfield. From there it is a whirlwind of comedy as Fox must lead two very different lives, and circumstances lead to his taking over the poorly managed company (with the help of his Aunt Vera).
7. Which of these films features actors Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce working against the Nazi regime by helping a German scientist escape to England?

Answer: Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon (1942)

Supposedly based on Arthur Conan Doyle's 1903 novel "The Adventure of the Dancing Men", about the only thing from the book that made it into the film is the substitution cipher that Holmes solves, giving him a breakthrough in both stories.

In the book, however, the Nazis weren't around yet. The film has Holmes and Watson involved with the rescue of a German scientist from a trap set by the Gestapo in Switzerland. This scientist (Dr. Franz Tobel) has invented a bombsight that will highly improve the accuracy of bombing runs. In secrecy, however, Dr. Tobel splits the manufacture of his bombsight between four separate Swiss scientists, keeping their locations hidden with the aforementioned cipher.

Professor Moriarty, previously believed to have died (in the 1939 film "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes"), gets involved and tries to take the bombsight for himself, through murder and torture. Holmes (and Watson), of course, manage to foil his dastardly plans.
8. Can Siddalee and her mother Viviane reconcile with each other after a lifetime of difficulties? In which of these films can you find out?

Answer: Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (2002)

A true story of intervention. Siddalee (Sandra Bullock) believes that her mother Viviane (Ellen Burstyn) ruined her life, and when things come to a head between them, drastic measures are taken by Viviane's childhood friends, a group of four girls (including Viviane) that made a loyalty pact and called themselves the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.

Viviane's three friends drug and kidnap Siddalee in New York and bring her back to Louisiana to learn about the life and difficulties that her mother had gone through growing up that Sidda had no idea about.
9. This crime thriller follows a retired federal agent as he tries to recall the details of a 25-year-old crime. What Argentinian film is this, entitled "El Secreto de Sus Ojos"?

Answer: The Secret in Their Eyes (2009)

This meta-story (a story within a story) has Benjamín Espósito (played by Ricardo Darín) meeting with Judge Irene Menéndez-Hastings (played by Soledad Villamil) to revisit an unsolved case from many years ago (for the purposes of writing about the case). As they remember the circumstances of the unsolved case, new realizations are made that lead to it being solved.

The film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Academy Awards (in 2010).
10. The heroine of this movie undertakes a quest in the Winter Woods and finds a sister she didn't know she had. Which movie?

Answer: Secret of the Wings (2012)

This is the fourth movie in the series of Disney animated films featuring Tinker Bell (of "Peter Pan" fame). The first was "Tinker Bell" (2008), followed by "Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure" (2009) and "Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue" (2010).

In this fourth installment, with the beginning of winter approaching, Tinker Bell is curious about the Winter Woods and the winter fairies there. When she crosses the border, her wings inexplicably begin to glow. From that point on, Tink is determined to find out what happened and why. She begins a quest to discover the truth, and finds out that they glowed when she came into proximity to a winter fairy named Periwinkle. They discover that they are actually sisters, but will they be able to reunite, given their different worlds?
