Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For what film did Sean Connery return to the role the first time?

Answer: Diamonds are Forever

007 is sent to investigate the existence of a diamond smuggling operation. His investigation eventually leads him to Ernst Stavro Blofeld, who is using the diamonds to create a laser satellite. Can 007 avoid his henchmen assassins and foil his plans?

After the departure of George Lazenby, the question of who would fill the shoes of the role became pertinent once again. American actor John Gavin was considered, but United Artists' boss, David Picker, wanted Sean Connery to return to the role at any price. When approached, Connery demanded £1.2 million and was given the choice of two films backed by United Artists.
2. In which film did Bond receive his Walther PPK?

Answer: Dr. No

A fellow British agent is murdered in Jamaica and 007 is sent to investigate. However, the investigation eventually discovers that there's more to Crab Key than fire breathing dragons.

When Bond is in M's office early on in the film, M requests that Major Geoffrey Boothroyd give advice on the firearms Bond is using. He suggests that Bond replace his Beretta 418 with the Walther PPK.

In the books prior to 'Dr. No', Bond carried a Beretta 418 pistol. Geoffrey Boothroyd, a firearms expert, once wrote to Fleming suggesting that the Beretta was not the best firearm for Bond to use. Instead, he recommended the Walther PPK. Since 'Dr. No' is the first film in the series, it wasn't long before the public began to associate the Walther PPK with James Bond.
3. In which film does Ernst Stavro Blofeld make his first appearance?

Answer: From Russia with Love

After the murder of one of its agents, the villainous SPECTRE organization seeks revenge. They plot to eliminate the culprit, British agent James Bond. The organization is also after a Russian decoding machine, the Lektor. Can 007 seize the machine first and avoid elimination?

Early on in the film, we see Blofeld for the first time, aboard his yacht. He is briefing Kronsteen, SPECTRE Number 5 and Rosa Klebb, SPECTRE Number 3. They devise a plan to steal the Lektor and execute revenge on Bond for killing Dr. No, who was a member of their organization.
4. Which film had a character called Mr. Solo?

Answer: Goldfinger

Auric Goldfinger plans to cripple the economy of the west by planting a nuclear bomb in the vault of the Bullion Depository. Therefore, the value of his gold supply will rise considerably. 007 is sent to stop Goldfinger before it's too late.

Mr. Solo is the lone gangster who opts out of Goldfinger's plan. He meets his demise by first being shot by Oddjob and then crushed into a cube at a car junkyard.
5. Prior to the reboot in 2006, what was the only film to not feature Q?

Answer: Live and Let Die

Three British agents are killed because each was investigating drug smuggling. 007 is sent to investigate the deaths. However, the investigation establishes that the Harlem crime boss, Mr. Big is responsible for the deaths and that Big plans to extinguish rivals by overwhelming the drug market with free heroin.

Over a period of 36 years, Desmond Llewellyn played Q in 17 films. Llewellyn was appearing in the British TV series 'Follyfoot' at the time 'Live and Let Die' was being filmed. In order for him to appear in the film, three episodes had his character written out. Much to his annoyance however, Q was left out of the film anyway.
6. Which film was notable for being the last to have Harry Saltzman attached as producer?

Answer: The Man with the Golden Gun

007 receives a message that he is the next target of the hitman Scaramanga, known as 'the man with the golden gun' and must play cat and mouse in order to avoid elimination. However, Scaramanga is after a device called a Solex Agitator that will harness the sun's energy. Can 007 find the device and survive the deadly game of cat and mouse?

Bond producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman both produced the first nine films together but by the mid-1970s, Saltzman had gotten into deep financial problems. Therefore, he sold his half of the franchise to United Artists and Albert R. Broccoli gained sole responsibility of producing the series.
7. Operation Bedlam was the name given to an assignment in which film?

Answer: On Her Majesty's Secret Service

After escaping in the previous adventure, Ernst Stavro Blofeld has relocated his base of operations to the Swiss Alps. Here, Blofeld is curing a number of girls of their allergies. However, in reality, Blofeld is using them to distribute a virus via biological warfare. 007 is sent undercover as Sir Hilary Bray to find out what Blofeld is planning this time. However, Bond becomes romantically involved with the daughter of the boss of a crime syndicate that ends with tragic results.

Operation Bedlam is the name given to Bond's pursuit of SPECTRE leader, Ernst Stavro Blofeld. However, M takes Bond off the case because M believes that the operation has come to a dead end and that Bond's 00 status would be put to better use if a different assignment is worked on instead. As a result, Bond threatens to resign but is given two weeks' leave instead, due to Moneypenny's intervention.
8. Based on an agreement between Ian Fleming and the film producers, which film had to be 100% original?

Answer: The Spy Who Loved Me

Karl Stromberg plots to create an underwater world and destroy life on the surface. In order to achieve this aim, he hijacks two nuclear submarines, one British and one Russian, and targets New York city and Moscow. Can 007 and his opposite number in the Russian secret service, Major Anya Amasova, stop Stromberg before it's too late?

'The Spy Who Loved Me' is the odd one out of the book series - the story is told in the first person perpective by the central character, Vivienne Michel. James Bond only appears in the story for the final third of the book and plays a supporting role.

Unhappy with the book, Ian Fleming only gave permission to use the title and not the story, when he sold the film rights to Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman.
9. For which film is Kevin McClory credited as producer?

Answer: Thunderball

The villainous SPECTRE organization has stolen two atomic warheads and 007 is sent to recover the bombs and prevent the organization from using the warheads on a British or American city.

'Thunderball' originated as a film project involving Ian Fleming, Kevin McClory and Jack Whittingham. It was to be the first in a film series and a story for the screenplay was pitched but the project fell through in the end.

Ian Fleming turned the failed screenplay into the 1961 Bond novel 'Thunderball'. However, the novel did not make any reference whatsoever to the fact that it was based on any screen treatment (the courts ruled that every copy of the book has to include this). Therefore, a lawsuit followed after McClory and Whittingham claimed that Fleming used story elements from the screenplay in the book.

McClory came out of the court case with rights to the story and characters but he had to wait 10 years following any offical 'Thunderball' production before releasing another. After the success of 'Goldfinger' as the 3rd film, Bond producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman reached a deal with McClory that they would make 'Thunderball' the 4th film, with McClory as executive producer and writing credits would be given to both McClory and Whittingham.
10. What was the first film to be chiefly set in an Asian country?

Answer: You Only Live Twice

007 is sent to investigate why both American and Russian spaceships have disappeared and who is behind the disappearances. Naturally, the two powers blame each other, but the British suspect that whoever is behind it is somewhere in the sea of Japan.

A number of Bond films have been set in an Asian country but 'You Only Live Twice' was the first to do so. The four previous films were set in the Bahamas, France, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Switzerland, Turkey, the United States and Yugoslavia.
