Garfield, with the help of Carmen's calculations, purchases shares of stock in New England Wire & Cable, thus driving up the share prices. As the small company celebrates Thanksgiving, the folksy chairman of the board cheerfully announces that the stock is up a point and a half. The more business oriented president rightfully fears that someone is manipulating the stock.

At the annual meeting of the stockholders, Chairman of the Board Andrew Jorgenson refers to Garfield as "Larry the Liquidator", a man who makes nothing and creates nothing. Garfield's standard plan is to buy a company and sell off its assets piecemeal, and he has determined that New England Wire & Cable ,with a fully vested retirement plan and valuable land and equipment, has an undervalued stock share price.

Garfield takes his limousine to visit the wire and cable company. He is met by administrative assistant Bea Sullivan who, because of a broken elevator, takes Garfield up several flights of stairs to the executive offices. She introduces him to the Chairman Andrew Jorgenson, who is portrayed by the legendary late actor Gregory Peck.

"We were founded in Rhode Island and we'll stay in Rhode Island," replies Jorgy who is a very difficult and stubborn corporate client and adamantly refuses to follow Kate's advice. Company president Bill Coles agrees with Kate because Delaware has strong anti-takeover legislation.

When Kate is unable to make a deal with the corporate raider it is decided to leave Garfield's takeover bid to a vote of the company's stockholders at their annual meeting. Unbeknownst to anyone, Bea travels to Garfield's New York City office and offers him the entire value of her interest in the company. Garfield advises Bea that he is not interested in the "greenmail".

He tells Bea that, "I don't take money from widows or orphans."

Bill Coles worries that if Garfield is successful in his corporate takeover, he will be left with nothing. He offers to let Garfield vote his shares for $1 million. Garfield agrees to pay, but if Coles' votes do not make a difference in the outcome of the election of the board of directors, he will pay Coles only one-half of his demand.

In the final vote tally Garfield wins handily and Coles only makes a half million dollars for his treasonous act.

After Jorgy's impassioned plea to save his company at the annual shareholders meeting, Garfield is booed when it comes to his turn to speak. He focuses on the idea of the changing technology and fiber optics that will make metal wire obsolete. He likens New England Wire & Cable to the last buggy whip maker, a business that eventually failed despite a high quality product.

The manufacturing of stainless steel wire cloth for making airbags would make the company profitable again. Kate suggests that Garfield sell his stock to the employees at a profit. An excited Garfield immediately asks Kate out to dinner to discuss the matter. While Kate will only agree to lunch, Garfield calls to his secretary to immediately contact his barber, manicurist and florist.
