Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First we meet the heiress, played by Elsie Ames. She's being pestered by Clemente (Eddie Laughton), who only loves her for her oil wells. But Elsie has a vulnerable spot. What does Clemente do that leaves her helpless?

Answer: He kisses her.

I doubt that Clemente's French accent would do anything for Elsie but make her laugh, since it's so poorly done it's hard to tell if Clemente is supposed to be French or Italian.

Clemente also flirts with the maid, cooing, "If only you had the oil wells!" But all he gets for his trouble is the maid trying to bite his finger. Backing away from Clemente's advances, Elise tumbles out the window and lands on a cactus.

Later Elsie describes the effects of Clemente's kisses: "I get goose pimples all over me. And then I'm a dead duck." Buster scoffs, "A kiss never killed a duck!"
2. Running away from Clemente, Elsie seeks refuge in the Waters & Piper plumber's shop. It's here where we first see Buster Keaton (Waters) and Monte Collins Jr. (Piper), working on a boiler. Buster gets his finger stuck in a pipe. How does he get it out?

Answer: Monte puts the pipe in a clamp and unscrews Buster from the pipe by turning his entire body.

Buster is clad in nearly the same outfit he was wearing when he'd made his cinematic debut in 1917 -- porkpie hat and bib overalls. All he's missing is the slap shoes.

Many critics and commentators misremember the unscrewing scene, recalling it as Buster holding a screwdriver while Monte turns him to screw something in.

Buster exhibits dismay that he seems to have lost the end of his finger in the pipe, only to have Monte unbend it and show him that it's fine. But Buster was really missing the end of that finger -- to the first knuckle, not to the second knuckle as he seems to think in the film. This gives the scene an odd ring to those in the know.
3. Elsie slips into the boiler while Buster and Monte have their backs turned. They fasten the end on the boiler, trapping Elsie inside. At first Buster and Monte think the radio is in the boiler. But as they cut open the boiler and investigate they come to another conclusion. What do they think is happening?

Answer: A murder victim has been disposed of in the boiler.

"Orson Wells is broadcasting again," Buster says when Elsie, sealed up in the boiler, asks, "Is this the end of the world?" But when Buster reaches in to get the radio out, he comes up with Elsie's leg. Looking shocked, he staggers over to his lunch box and tries to go home. Monte reaches in and pulls out Elsie's slip.

While they're working on getting the base off the boiler, Elsie sneaks out through the hole Monte had cut in the side of the boiler.
4. Elsie hires Buster and Monte to fix her dripping shower. They show up toting a bag and a huge box. What's in the box?

Answer: Their time clock

The first thing they do -- after Buster drops the tool bag first on Monte's foot and then on Elsie's -- is punch in. Then Buster takes a look at the shower and promises Elise, "We'll have that thing fixed in less than a week."
5. Buster gets totally drenched due to a mix-up with Monte while he's fixing the shower. He strips out of his soggy clothes and wraps himself in a towel. This leads to yet another mix-up. Who misunderstands what's going on?

Answer: Clemente thinks Elsie is two-timing him with Buster.

Clemente demands that whoever is hiding in Elsie's bathroom come out. Buster emerges, clad in towel and porkpie hat. Clemente slaps Buster with his glove to challenge him to a duel. Buster responds by slapping Clemente in the face -- with his towel. In "The Passionate Plumber", the suggestion was that this little gesture left Buster naked.

But in "She's Oil Mine", the camera quickly pulls back to a full-body shot, making the Hays Office happy with the fact that Buster is wearing shorts.
6. Buster ends up agreeing to fight a duel with Clemente. When given his choice of weapons, what does Buster propose?

Answer: Clemente can use a sword and he'll use a pistol.

Monte argues that Buster's proposal is perfectly reasonable, since a sword is longer than a pistol. "Besides, Mr. Waters might miss and shoot himself." The judge Clemente brought chooses pistols.
7. The judge chooses. They will duel with pistols. He places the men back to back, with their instructions to walk ten paces, turn, and fire. Which is NOT one of the ways the duel goes awry?

Answer: Buster steps in a gopher hole.

First Buster follows in Clemente's footsteps. Then he runs and dives to fire prone, only to have Clemente's gun jam. Here's where Buster recycles a gag from "Our Hospitality" (1923) -- he takes the gun from Clemente and fires it himself, then hands it back. On the third try, the sash, which had been the only thing holding Buster's pants up, unwinds, leaving Buster tripping over his trousers.
8. Just as Buster and Clemente are preparing yet another time to duel to the death, something happens that scares everybody right off the dueling field. What?

Answer: A hunter fires a shot gun.

It's not clear why the sound of a hunter's shot gun would scare everybody and send them running off. But they had to break up the bit somehow to move on to the finish. And though Elsie did arrive just as the hunter scared everybody off, her arrival had gone unnoticed.
9. What does Buster stop to do before fleeing?

Answer: He punches out on the time clock.

Just as they'd brought the time clock to Elsie's place to fix her shower, Buster and Monte had taken the time clock to the duel. Both men had clocked in. But Monte took off with the judge and Clemente and Clemente's second. Buster, taking off in the other direction, starts to sprint past their jalopy when he notices the clock and punches out.
10. How does the movie end?

Answer: Buster grabs Elsie, kisses her, and drops her on the ground.

Buster kisses Elsie exactly the way she'd kissed him earlier in the movie. Of course, Buster looks completely ridiculous, since his sash is running through his crotch and tied around his neck to hold his pants up. Nevertheless, he emerges triumphant.
