Reggie Dunlop is the character portrayed by Paul Newman. John Brophy racked up nearly 4000 penalty minutes as a player and has amassed over 1000 victories while coaching.

Johnstown is located about 70 miles east of Pittsburgh and is best known for the 1889 flood that destroyed the town and killed over 2000 people. The dog statue located in the downtown park in the movie is actually a big part of the town's history. The dog statue was washed away in that flood, but later found and reconstructed.

In the movie the dog is said to be a hero from a flood in Charlestown. Johnstown's minor league hockey team later took Chiefs as their nickname.

The coke bottle glasses wearing brothers were originally to be played by real life brothers Jack, Steve and Jeff Carlson, who were all minor league hockey players at the time. However Jack got called up by the Edmonton Oilers and was replaced by Dave Hanson for the film. Every year Steve, Jeff and Dave do numerous public appearances as the Hanson brothers and took up these roles again for the unsuccessful sequel in 2002.
