Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With the fitting tagline "Let the magic begin", the very first movie in the "Harry Potter" franchise entitled "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" was released in 2001. Directed by Chris Columbus, this movie introduced the viewers to the magical world of Harry Potter. The trio, Harry, Ron and Hermione, speculated that Snape, who acted suspiciously, wanted to steal the Philosopher's Stone. However, they eventually found out that the man behind the plot was Professor Quirrell, who shared his body with Lord Voldemort. Why did Lord Voldemort want the stone so badly?

Answer: The stone could restore his power and grant him immortality.

After learning from Hagrid that Nicolas Flamel had something to do with the Philosopher's stone, Hermione suggested Harry to look up for his name in the library's restricted section. Harry used his Invisibility Cloak and sneaked into that section. Before he managed to find any information, Argus came and Harry fled in panic.

It was Hermione who later found out that the name of Nicolas Flamel was mentioned in one of the books that she borrowed from the library. She read from the book, "Nicolas Flamel is the only known maker of the Philosopher's stone. The Philosopher's stone is a legendary substance with astonishing powers. It will transform any metal into pure gold, and produce Elixir of Life, which will make the drinker immortal."

Lord Voldemort was extremely weak and fragile. He shared Quirrell's body. He even drank unicorn's blood in order to gain strength. Initially, the trio, Harry, Ron and Hermione, suspected that it was Snape who was going after the stone. Hermione thought that Snape was jinxing Harry during the Quidditch match so she set Snape's robe on fire. Also, Harry saw Snape's injured leg and assumed that he was bitten by the three-headed dog, Fluffy.

After going through the trapdoor guarded by Fluffy and a series of challenging tasks, Harry confronted the man who was behind the plot. To his surprise, it was Quirrell who was trying to steal the stone, and not Snape. Quirrell then removed his turban, revealing Voldemort's face on the back of his head.

The author of the "Harry Potter" series, J. K. Rowling, picked the actor Alan Rickman herself for the role of Snape. She had a private conversation with Rickman, where she told him about some vital information about Snape's character and secret, which was only revealed in the seventh and final book of the series.

The former English rugby union athlete, Martin Bayfield, who was 6'10" tall, was the body double for Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid, the half-giant in the movie.
2. The second movie in the "Harry Potter" octology, released in 2002, was "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets". With the tagline "The Chamber of Secrets has been opened. Enemies of the heir... beware!", this movie told the mystery and dark history of the secret chamber that housed a monster. Many unwanted incidents happened at Hogwarts where several students were being attacked and petrified. Professor McGonagall even feared that Hogwarts needed to be closed if there were more attacks by the terrifying monster. What was the monster that resided in the chamber?

Answer: A basilisk

After Hermione was petrified, Harry and Ron visited her in the hospital wing. Harry then noticed that Hermione was clutching a crumpled paper in her left hand. He took the paper out carefully and found vital information. He read to Ron, "Of the many fearsome beasts and monsters that roam our land, none is more deadly than the basilisk. Capable of living for hundreds of years, instant death awaits everyone who meets this giant serpent's eyes."

They both came to the realization that the monster that lived in the chamber was a basilisk. Being a Parselmouth (a person who could speak Parseltongue and communicate with snakes), Harry also understood how he could hear the basilisk's voice.

Harry then deduced what happened to the several victims that had been petrified - Colin saw the monster through his camera; Justin saw the basilisk through Nearly Headless Nick's transparent body; Hermione saw the beast in the mirror; and Mrs. Norris only saw the reflection of the giant snake from the water on the floor.

In the final face-off, Harry used the Sword of Gryffindor to defeat the basilisk. Harry also used the basilisk's fang to stab Tom Riddle's diary, which eventually saved Ginny's life.

Chris Columbus was the director of "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets". Interestingly, all four of his children, namely Eleanor, Brendan, Violet and Isabella, appeared in the movie.

The actor who played Dumbledore, Richard Harris, died of Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a few weeks before the movie was released.
3. Released in 2004 and directed by Alfonso Cuarón, the third installment of the "Harry Potter" series, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", followed the story of the titular character, Sirius Black. As depicted in the movie's tagline, "Have you seen this wizard? Approach with extreme caution! Do not attempt to use magic against this man!", Harry initially thought that Sirius was a dangerous convict whose actions led to the death of his parents. He also assumed that Sirius escaped from the prison to kill him, but later he found out Sirius was going after another person. Who was this person?

Answer: Peter Pettigrew

Harry first learned about Sirius Black while he was on the Knight Bus. He learned that Sirius had escaped from the Azkaban prison. At Hogwarts, in one of his Divination classes, Professor Trelawney warned Harry that he was in great danger.

The Weasley twins, Fred and George, gave Harry their prized possession - the Marauder's Map. Harry noticed that Peter Pettigrew's name appeared on the parchment but, when he came looking for Peter, he found no one was there on the location indicated by the map. Hence, he believed that the map was not always accurate. He told this to Professor Lupin when he confiscated the map from Harry. It was then that Lupin realized Peter was still alive because he knew that the map never lied.

One evening, Ron's pet, Scabbers bit him and Ron was dragged into the basement of the Whomping Willow tree by a giant black dog. Harry and Hermione followed Ron. An underground passage then led them to the Shrieking Shack, where they learned the ultimate truth about Sirius. Sirius explained that he was innocent and the person who led to the death of Harry's parents was actually Peter, who lived in his Animagus form as Scabbers. Sirius and Lupin wanted to kill Peter, but Harry stepped in and said his father, James, would not have wanted to see his two best friends became killers.

In the movie, Hermione also used her time-turner to save both Buckbeak and Sirius.

After the death of Richard Harris, who played Dumbledore in the previous two "Harry Potter" movies, many actors were considered to replace him. They included Christopher Lee, Ian McKellen, Peter O'Toole and Richard Attenborough. The role eventually went to Michael Gambon. Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, commented, "I had enough trouble living up to one legend. Two would be too much to hope for."
4. "Difficult time lies ahead" was the tagline for the fourth movie in the "Harry Potter" franchise - "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire". Directed by Mike Newell, this 2005 movie saw Harry participating in the legendary Triwizard Tournament. The headmaster of Hogwarts, Dumbledore, welcomed the participation of the wizarding schools of Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. He then revealed the Goblet of Fire, which would choose the three champions, one from each school. When Harry was announced as a fourth champion, everyone was baffled. Why was this so?

Answer: Harry was underaged.

The first three names chosen by the Goblet of Fire were Victor Krum, representing Durmstrang; Fleur Delacour, representing Beauxbatons; and Cedric Diggory, representing Hogwarts. However, everyone was surprised to see the Goblet of Fire spit up a fourth name - Harry Potter.

Earlier, Professor Dumbledore stated clearly that only students 17 and older were allowed to put their names in the magical cup. He even drew an age line around the cup. After reading Harry's name, Dumbledore grabbed Harry and asked him if he really put his name in the cup. Harry denied it.

Towards the end of the movie, it was ultimately revealed that it was Barty Crouch Jr., who impersonated Mad Eye Moody by drinking Polyjuice Potion, who put Harry's name in the Goblet of Fire.

Mike Newell was the first English director who directed a "Harry Potter" movie. He rejected the studio's idea of splitting the fourth "Harry Potter" book into two separate movies. Chris Columbus (American) directed the first two "Harry Potter" movies while Alfonso Cuarón (Mexican) directed the third.

It was reported that more than 3000 girls turned up for the audition held in London on 7 Feb, 2004 for the role of Cho Chang in the movie. The role eventually went to Katie Leung.
5. In "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (2005), Harry competed in the dangerous Triwizard Tournament. He needed to complete a total of three challenging tasks. For the first task, he summoned his Firebolt broomstick to retrieve a golden egg guarded by a ferocious dragon. For the second task, he used Gillyweed to enable him to breathe underwater and save his best friend, Ron. For his third and final task, all the four contestants were placed inside a hedge maze. Whoever reached and touched the Triwizard Cup first would be declared as the winner. What happened when Harry and Cedric touched the Triwizard Cup together?

Answer: They were transported to a graveyard.

Dumbledore announced that earlier in the day Professor Moody had placed the Triwizard Cup somewhere in the hedge maze. However, little did he know that it was Barty Crouch, Jr. who was impersonating Moody all this time, by drinking Polyjuice Potion. The real Moody was locked in his own chest in his office.

In order to bring Harry to Voldemort, Barty needed to make sure that Harry would win the competition. He first put Harry's name in the Goblet of Fire. He also told Hagrid about the dragons used for the first task. He also told Cedric to put the golden egg underwater to get the clue for the next task. Also, he gave a book on herbology to Neville. He even signaled Harry to turn left before the start of the third task.

When Harry and Cedric touched the Triwizard Cup together, they did not realize that the trophy was actually a portkey that would transport them to a graveyard, where they met Voldemort and Peter. Voldemort ordered Peter to kill Cedric. After defeating Voldemort, Harry brought Cedric's body back to Hogwarts.

Ralph Fieness portrayed Lord Voldemort in the movie. Special effect teams digitally removed Ralph's nose after the scenes were filmed.

During the first take of Hermione's scene featuring her walking down the stair during the Yule Ball, Emma Watson actually tripped over her dress.
6. Released in 2007, the fifth movie in the "Harry Potter" franchise, entitled "Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix" was directed by David Yates. With the tagline "The rebellion begins", the movie explored the noble inception of a secret organization called the Order of Phoenix, founded by Dumbledore. Inspired by the Order of Phoenix, Harry and his friends at Hogwarts also formed their secret society - Dumbledore's Army. Towards the end of the movie, as the members of the Dumbleore's Army fought against Death Eaters in the Department of Mysteries at the Ministry of Magic, which member of the Order of Phoenix was killed?

Answer: Sirius Black

Arriving at the Order of Phoenix's headquarter, which was also Sirius Black's house, Harry learned from Sirius that Lord Voldemort wanted something that he did not have last time.

At Hogwarts, the newly appointed Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Dolores Umbridge, changed the syllabus of the course, and she was unwilling to teach the students any practical magic. When questioned by Hermione about the change of syllabus, Umbridge replied that there was no one who wanted to harm them. Harry then intercepted and said Voldemort's name.

Ron and Hermione then suggested the formation of a secret society, which they later called Dumbledore's Army. Harry was the best candidate to teach his friends since he had encountered Voldemort before. Harry taught them many defensive spells, including the powerful "Expecto Patronum" spell.

When Umbridge found out about Dumbledore's Army, she questioned Dumbledore about the matter. This led to the dismissal of his post as the headmaster of Hogwarts. Umbridge then became the new headmistress of Hogwarts. During her stay in Hogwarts, Umbridge did many terrible things that annoyed both the teachers and the students - she fired Professor Trelawney and set up many ridiculous rules.

At the end of the movie, Voldemort and Dumbledore dueled in the Department of Mysteries at the Ministry of Magic. Harry's godfather, Sirius Black, was killed by one of Voldemort's faithful servants, Bellatrix Lestrange.

The original choice for the role of Bellatrix Lestrange was Helen McCrory. However, she was replaced by Helena Bonham Carter due to pregnancy. McCrory was later cast to play Malfoy's mother, Narcissa Malfoy in the sixth movie, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince".

In the book, Nymphadora Tonks sometimes changed the colour of her hair. However, she had purple coloured hair in the movie. The filmmakers avoided pink since the colour was related to Umbridge, who wore pink dresses throughout the movie.
7. With the tagline "Dark secret revealed", the sixth "Harry Potter" movie in the series, entitled "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" was released in 2009. The movie followed Harry's adventure in his sixth year of study at Hogwarts. Professor Slughorn was appointed the new Potions Master while Harry found an old potions book that belonged to a person who called himself the Half-Blood Prince. Also, Harry learned more about the Horcruxes created by Voldemort. After Dumbledore and Harry came back from obtaining a Horcrux, what did the Half-Blood Prince do to Dumbledore?

Answer: He killed Dumbledore.

With the help from Harry, Dumbledore managed to convince Horace Slughorn to go back to Hogwarts and teach. He was the new Potions Master, while Snape was the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.

When Dumbledore found out that one of Slughorn's memories had been altered, he tasked Harry to approach Slughorn and obtain the vital memory that would help them defeat Voldemort. Slughorn eventually told Harry that a young Tom Riddle asked him about Horcruxes.

Dumbledore informed Harry that two of the Horcruxes had been found and destroyed - Tom Riddle's diary and a ring. He then asked Harry to join him to find the third Horcrux. They found a locket in a cave, but much to Harry's disappointment and anger, he later realized that it was a fake.

Harry found many useful modified instructions in the old potions book he got from a bookshelf. He also found a powerful spell in the book. He first used the "Sectumsemptra" spell on Draco. He then used it on Snape, who repelled the spell easily, and revealed to Harry that he was the Half-Blood Prince.

Draco was tasked by Voldemort to kill Dumbledore, but he could not perform the killing curse. Snape stepped in and performed the "Avada Kedavra" curse on Dumbledore, killing him on the spot.

When the author of the "Harry Potter" series, J. K. Rowling, read through the script for the sixth movie, she was surprised to find out that there was a line where Dumbledore mentioned a girl he met while he was young. She then asked the writer to remove that line and revealed that Dumbledore was gay. She also used this information to promote her final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows".
8. The penultimate movie in the "Harry Potter" series, entitled "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1", was released in 2010. With the tagline "The end begins", the quest to find and destroy Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes continued. The movie also examined the origin of the Deathly Hallows, which referred to a collection of three magical objects - the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone and the Cloak of Invisibility. According to Luna's father, Xeno, what was the special power that one would get if he or she possessed all these three items?

Answer: He would conquer death and become invincible.

Harry managed to track down the whereabouts of one of Voldermort's Horcruxes - the locket. With the help from Ron and Hermione, Harry retrieved the locket from Umbridge and Ron destroyed it by using the Sword of Gryffindor.

Hermione and Ron were familiar with the story of "The Tale of the Three Brothers", but Harry said he had never heard of it. Hermione then read the story aloud. The story was about how three brothers cheated Death when they tried to cross a river by performing some magic. Death was impressed and awarded each of the three brothers an item they wished for. The eldest brother wanted to be invincible so he received the Elder Wand. The second brother was awarded the Resurrection Stone and he used it to bring his lover back to life. The youngest brother, who was the cleverest, got the Cloak of Invisibility.

The trio then found out more from Xeno about the origin and the special powers of the three objects. Xeno commented, "The Elder Wand, the most powerful wand ever made. The Resurrection Stone. The Cloak of Invisibility. Together they made the Deathly Hallows. Together they made one the Master of Death."

J. K. Rowling was one of the producers for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1".

The Parseltongue language featured in the movie was devised by a linguist expert, Dr. Francis Nolan.
9. The eighth and final installment in the "Harry Potter" franchise, entitled "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2", was released in 2011. The tagline of the movie, "It all ends", perfectly described the fate of Lord Voldemort. The trio, Harry, Ron and Hermione managed to find and destroy another two Horcruxes - Hufflepuff's Cup and Ravenclaw's diadem. With the destruction of these two objects, a total of five Horcruxes had been destroyed, and this meant that they were closer to killing Voldemort. Although Voldemort had retrieved the Elder Wand from Dumbledore's grave, he did not find the Resurrection Stone and the Cloak of Invisibility. Where was the Resurrection Stone hidden?

Answer: In the golden snitch that Dumbledore gave to Harry.

With the help from Griphook, the trio broke into Bellatrix's vault at Gringotts and stole the valuable Hufflepuff's Cup. Also, Harry managed to find the next Horcrux - Ravenclaw's diadem in the Room of Requirement at Hogwarts.

In his will, Dumbledore gave Harry a golden snitch, which was also the very same snitch that Harry caught during his first Quidditch match in his first year of study at Hogwarts.

As Harry walked to the Forbidden Forest to meet Voldemort, he knew that his end was near. He placed his lips on the snitch and the snitch opened, revealing the Resurrection Stone inside it. Harry then saw the ghosts of James, Lily, Sirius and Lupin.

Harry also had the Cloak of Invisibility in his possession. The previous owner of the cloak had been his father, James.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2" was the first and only movie in the series to be released entirely in 3D.

The actor who played Professor Flitwick, Warwick Davis, owned a company named Willow Personnel Management. The company recruited little people and tried to find them jobs. The actors who played goblins at Gringotts Wizarding Bank featured in the movie were all recruited from Davis' company.
10. In "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2" (2011), the epic battle between good and evil reached its climax when the Death Eaters besieged Hogwarts. Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Tonks and Fred Weasley were killed in the battle at Hogwarts. Lord Voldemort himself also had Snape killed mercilessly when he thought that he needed to do so in order to become the real master of the Elder Wand. In the end, the boy who lived, Harry Potter and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, Lord Voldemort faced off in the ultimate duel. Who survived and who died in the duel?

Answer: Harry survived while Voldemort was killed.

Lord Voldemort demanded that Harry meet him in the Forbidden Forest, or he would kill more innocent people. Harry had no choice but to follow his order. When Voldemort cast the killing spell on Harry, Harry fell to the ground and woke up in King's Cross Station. He met Dumbledore, who explained to him that he could either take the train and move on, or go back and continue with the battle. Harry chose the latter.

During the ultimate duel between Harry and Voldemort, the killing curse cast by Voldemort backfired on him and killed him. The Elder Wand left Voldemort's hand and flew to Harry.

The only actors and actresses who appeared in all eight "Harry Potter" movies were: Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), James Phelps (Fred Weasley), Oliver Phelps (George Weasley), Devon Murray (Seamus Finnigan), Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom), Josh Herdman (Gregory Goyle), Geraldine Somerville (Lily Potter), Robbie Coltrane (Rubeus Hagrid), Alan Rickman (Severus Snape) and Warwick Davis (Filius Flitwick).

With $92.1 million, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2" (2011) broke the single day box office record, which was previously held by "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" (2009), with $72.7 million.
