Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Gladys first arrives in London, which city has she just come from?

Answer: Liverpool

On arriving in London, Gladys goes straight to the offices of the China Missionary Society. She tells the head of the Society, Dr. Robinson, that she has left her position as a housemaid in Liverpool to fulfill her dream of becoming a missionary in China.
2. When Gladys arrives at the China Missionary Society, they send her to China straight away.

Answer: False

In fact, she is told that she is not qualified enough to go. Dr. Robinson instead finds her a position as a maid in the house of an old friend of the Society, Sir Francis Jamison.
3. Why does Gladys travel overland to China via Russia?

Answer: It is cheaper than taking the boat.

Gladys has to pay her own way to China - which she does by paying the travel agent in installments over a number of months. The sea route is too expensive and so, despite the hardship and danger, she opts for the overland route by way of the Trans-Siberian Railway.
4. What is the name of the missionary whom Gladys helps open the Inn of the Sixth Happiness?

Answer: Jeannie Lawson

Jeannie has been working as a missionary in China for several years by the time Gladys arrives. Realising that the Chinese love stories, she comes up with a plan to open an inn at which she can tell muleteers Bible stories, in the hope that they will spread them along the trade routes of China.

Gladys points out to Jeannie that the Chinese traditionally wish each other the five happinesses (health, wealth, virtue, longevity and a peaceful death in old age) and queries what the sixth happiness is. That, Jeannie tells her, is for each person to work out themselves.

Sadly, Jeannie dies following a fall, not long after Gladys's arrival. The Missionary Society calls the unqualified Gladys back to Tientsin, but she refuses to leave.

Dr. Robinson was the head of the Missionary Society, Sir Francis Jamison was the man for whom Gladys worked in London and Mr. Murphy was the travel agent who sold Gladys her ticket to China.
5. The mandarin of Yang Cheng appoints Gladys as a local inspector. What is she in charge of inspecting?

Answer: Feet

Gladys becomes the local foot inspector, in charge of ensuring that the government's law on the prohibition of feet binding in women and girls is met.
6. Gladys is eventually given the name Jen-ai by the local populace. What translation is given for Jen-ai?

Answer: One who loves people

Gladys's love and selfless devotion to others leads to her being given this name in the film.
Most sources give the name awarded to the real Gladys as Ai-weh-deh which means Virtuous One.
7. What name does Gladys give to the daughter she adopts by the side of the road?

Answer: Sixpence

Gladys comes across a woman at the roadside who has a baby for sale. Gladys has no money with her except a sixpence coin she has brought from England. She gives this to the woman and thereafter names the child Sixpence.

Gladys's friend, Colonel Lin, is dismissive of her ability to raise and love a Chinese child, not realising that Gladys has already adopted four Chinese children.
8. Who attacks Yang Cheng, prompting Gladys and the children to flee?

Answer: The Japanese Army

Having invaded northern China the Japanese bomb Yang Cheng but later withdraw. It is the threat of their return that leads to the abandonment of the town and Gladys's determination to see the local children to safety.
9. How many children does Gladys lead through the mountains to safety?

Answer: 100

In addition to her own adopted children, Gladys determines to take the fifty or so children from the local orphanage to the city of Xian, where trucks under the guidance of her old friend Dr. Robinson will take them to safety. When another 50 children arrive in Yang Cheng from another orphanage, unaccompanied by any adults, Gladys is unfazed. With only the freed convict Lee to help her, she is determined to take every last child to safety. Even when she learns that the road to Xian is blocked by Japanese troops she is undeterred, opting for the difficult route across the mountains. Sadly, Lee is killed by the Japanese, after leading them away from the children.

However, Gladys makes it to Xian with all 100 of the original children.
10. Which song are the children singing when Gladys leads them into Xian?

Answer: This Old Man

Gladys had taught the song to the children to keep their spirits up and stop their teeth chattering, after they had been forced to wade across a fiercely flowing river.

Assuming the children are not going to arrive in time, Dr. Robinson is about to give the order for the trucks to leave when they hear the sound of the children singing this song as they march into the city. Gladys and the children are greeted by a rapturous welcome by the citizens of Xian. Dr. Robinson is astounded to see Gladys, whom he had forgotten about long ago.
