The Man Who Would Be King (Part I) Quiz

'The Man Who Would Be King' is a charming and magnificent film from 1975 that, unfortunately, does not get quite the attention that it deserves. This pair of quizzes is my contribution to rectifying that situation.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Upon which poet's work is the film 'The Man Who Would Be King' based?

Answer: Rudyard Kipling

'The Man Who Would Be King' was a short story written by the poet Rudyard Kipling in 1888. It was first published in 'The Phantom Rickshaw and Other Eerie Tales', a collection of stories by Kipling. Kipling's story was roughly based on the adventures of American adventurer Josiah Harlan.
2. Which director took on the audacious task of bringing 'The Man Who Would Be King' to film in 1975?

Answer: John Huston

John Huston, best known for such film classics as 'The Maltese Falcon', 'Treasure of the Sierra Madre' and 'The African Queen', had wanted to direct this film for several decades, with the screen pair of Humphrey Bogart and Cary Grant originally in mind. Over 20 years and several desired castings later, Huston finally got his project off the ground in the mid-70s.
3. Let's introduce the main character now, shall we? First, we have Peachy Carnehan, a hard spoken and confident British soldier with pound signs in his eyes. Which actor takes on the task of performing this role?

Answer: Michael Caine

Michael Caine, who has acted in innumerable films in an over half-century career, really brings Peachy to life in this film. Of all his over 100 career roles, this may well be his most lively and entertaining.
4. Sean Connery graces us with his regal presence in the other lead role in this film, his character having the given name Daniel (or Danny). What is his surname?

Answer: Dravot

Daniel Dravot, Esq., to you! Daniel Dravot is also a British soldier, like his friend Peachy, and also like Peachy he has a strong desire to make his place in the world, though it might be reasonable to suggest that Daniel Dravot's interests revolve more around power than money.
5. In which country does the journey begin in the grand adventure of Daniel and Peachy?

Answer: India

In India, Daniel and Peachy make a pact with each other that they will control their primal urges (no women, no drinking, etc.) until they have made themselves 'kings'. It is in India that they relate their plans to Mr. Rudyard Kipling, played ably by Christopher Plummer in the film.
6. In one of my favorite scenes in the film, Peachy rides in a train on his way towards meeting his friend Daniel. On the train, he is introduced to a very ill-mannered Indian man named Clutterbury Das (whom Peachy refers to as 'Babu'). What food item does Das offer to Peachy?

Answer: Watermelon

Peachy most unceremoniously boots 'Babu' from the train, claiming him to have stolen the watch of Mr. Kipling. It is at this point that we realize the nature of the film, an adventure film with an absurdist comedic bent.
7. Daniel and Peachy mean to make themselves kings in which distant and relatively unknown region of the world?

Answer: Kafiristan

Kafiristan is approximately located in what is now northeastern Afghanistan. It is the genuine historical name for the current Afghani province of Nurestan.
8. In order to reach their eventual destination, Daniel and Peachy must cross a treacherous pass over some of the steepest mountains in the world. What is the name of this pass?

Answer: Khyber Pass

The Khyber Pass connects Afghanistan and Pakistan. Armies from many countries have fought for control over the Khyber Pass over the centuries, as it is a very significant trade route between central and south Asia.
9. A dangerous natural event occurs during their treacherous journey, ironically helping them along on their way. Which of these disasters becomes a boon for Daniel and Peachy?

Answer: Avalanche

Daniel and Peachy are trapped in the high altitudes of the Hindu Kush, with almost no chance of survival. A massive chasm blocks their chances of proceeding. However, an avalache occurs, filling the chasm and allowing them to move forward on their quest. Later, Daniel will take this as a sign of fate.
10. On their travels, Daniel and Peachy meet a Gurkha soldier who has fought for the British army, but now resides in isolation with some tribesmen. What is the name of this helpful interpreter?

Answer: Billy Fish

Billy Fish is played by actor Saeed Jaffrey, whom you may recognize from such films as 'Gandhi' and 'A Passage to India'. Jaffrey is considered to be one of the greatest actors from India.
