Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The plot of an award winning film can be condensed into the following. "A man finally gets his life together with a job and a girlfriend. Then his disreputable brother shows up to spoil things. The first man then tries to take his revenge." From this description can you identify the winner of the for "Best Film" award at the 23rd Czech Lion awards?

Answer: Snake Brothers

The film title is a reference to the brothers' nicknames, which translate into English as Grass Snake and Cobra. The characters of Vojtech and Petr Stastny are played by actor brothers Matej and Krystof Hadek respectively. In addition to the award for best film, the two brothers also won Czech Lions for best actor in a leading role and in a supporting role for this film. Another five Czech Lions were won by this film in other categories.
(I have excluded the diacritics in the spellings of the Czech names.)
The alternative answers were all films which won Crystal Globes in different years at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival which is also held in the Czech Republic.
2. The first film to win both a Crystal Globe for best feature film at the "Karlovy Vary International Film Festival" (2002) and a Czech Lion for best film (2003), was a music themed pseudo-documentary. Which of these films was it?

Answer: Year of the Devil

Pseudo-documentaries, sometimes called "mockumentaries" have been around a long time. But the term mockumentary seems to have arisen in connection with the film "This Is Spinal Tap". The wrong answers are all films of the genre and are music based, but none of them are Czech or have won the listed awards.

The film follows a real-life Czech folk group, Cechomor and other musicians all playing themselves. These form the band central to the film. Added to these is the character of an alcoholic Dutch filmmaker who plans to make a film of the band's tour.
The Crystal Globes awarded at Karlovy Vary are entirely separate from the Crystal Globes awarded by the French Press Association, which in turn are not just for films.
3. Having spent his entire life in an institution, Frantisek is turned loose on the world. Which film, awarded the Czech Lion for best film at the 7th such awards, does this describe?

Answer: The Idiot Returns

The film was to some degree derived from the writings of Dostoevsky. Frantisek is the innocent with little or no experience of how the world works.
Apart from the Czech Lion the film won a Golden Kingfisher for best film at the Plezen Film Festival in 1999. It was also submitted for the Best Foreign Film at the 72nd Oscars but failed to make the shortlist.
Of the wrong answers "Indian Summer" was by the same director (Sasa Gedeon) and also won a Golden Kingfisher for best film.
The other two were recipients of Crystal Globes for best film at Karlovy Vary at various times.
4. Possibly the first film to use it, the 2020 winner of the Czech Lion for best film includes dialogue in the Interslavic language. Which Czech film, which was shortlisted for best foreign language film at the 92nd Academy Awards is this?

Answer: The Painted Bird

Interslavic is an example of a "zonal constructed language", a language that is intended to be mutually intelligible between speakers of related languages. Interslavic is constructed to be understandable by speakers of any of the Slavic languages.
In "The Painted Bird" this was deliberately chosen so that the nastier events were not implied as the being committed by any specific nationality.
The film itself is set in eastern Europe during World War 2. From an unspecified country a young Jewish boy (Joska) is sent away to stay with his aunt. His parents hoping to spare him from the Nazi genocide. When Joska's aunt dies he tries to find his way back home. The film covers his experiences and the horrors he encounters on this journey.
This is not an easy film to watch, harrowing is a common description used. The violence and brutality had audiences walking out at several film festivals including Venice. But it is also reported to have received standing ovations from those who watched it through. Amongst other prizes, it won the best film and best director awards at the 27th Czech Lions, along with seven more. The film also won awards at several other film festivals around the world.
5. The film "The Elementary School", released in 1991, was successful at winning a Golden Kingfisher at the 1991 Pilzen film festival. The film was also nominated for an Oscar at the 64th Academy Awards (held in 1992). However, it did not win a Czech Lion in any category, it was not even nominated for any. What is the primary reason for this?

Answer: The film pre-dates the awards.

The first Czech Lions were awarded in 1994 for Czech films released the previous year. Being Slovakian (or any other non-Czech nationality) would not disqualify a film from being awarded a Czech Lion, provided a Czech film studio was a co-producer. However, at the time of the film's release in 1991 the country was Czechoslovakia so this distinction would not have existed.
The film itself is set shortly after World War 2. A class of students in a boy's school are too rebellious and drive away their teacher. The replacement starts off very strict but eventually wins over the boys.
The prequel, "Barefoot", released in 2017 did win several Lions but not the best film award.
6. The lead character in "I Served the King of England" is a former waiter who has just been released from prison and is reminiscing about his life. His mentor in the hotel trade used to boast of having served the King of England. Which important person has our protagonist served?

Answer: Emperor of Ethiopia

Jan Dite worked his way up from street vendor to hotel waiter before World War 2. At the end of the war he has become very rich. He was imprisoned following the communist takeover. His crime was being rich, the sentence 1 year for each million of his wealth, a sentence of fifteen years.
This film won the best film award at the 2006 Czech Lions along with prizes at several other award ceremonies.
The film is based on a book of the same name by Czech novelist Bohumil Hrabal. Another film based on Hrabel's writings was "Closely Watched Trains" which won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1968.
7. The strict translation of the title of the best film winner at the 8th Czech Lion awards is "We Must Help Each Other". But what English language title was given to the film?

Answer: Divided We Fall

Set during World War 2, no-one comes out of this film as completely on the side of the angels but neither do they appear as out and out evil. Individuals simultaneously collaborate with the Nazi's by evicting Jewish residents and also hide Jews in their house.

Others try to send Jews to concentration camps and also join the resistance. The Nazi who lodges in the house where a young Jewish boy is hidden admits at the end that he knew about it for a long time but didn't do anything about it. Due to, or despite the various ambivalent morals of the characters, all manage to survive the war and unite at the end of the film. This was also nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 73rd Oscars but didn't win.
8. The son of the first president of Czechoslovakia is the main character in which of these films?

Answer: A Prominent Patient

Jan Masaryk was a real person - Czech ambassador to the United Kingdom between the two World Wars. Following the Munich agreement he was unable to return to his homeland. The plot of the film after this point is highly speculative. It claims that Jan Masaryk spent the time in an American hospital being treated by a German psychologist. The patient/doctor relationship is the main theme of this film due to the doctor being German and Jan's hatred for what the Germans have done to his country.
The known facts are that during World War 2 Jan Masaryk was part of the Czechoslovakian government in exile based in London. He was part of the post war government of Czechoslovakia but soon after the communist takeover he died in mysterious circumstances.
Either as a suicide, accident or murder he fell from a window in Prague, a place that is noted for defenestrations. One of the memorials in Prague to him includes the inscription which can be roughly translated as "The truth wins, but it is hard work".
The wrong answers are all films that have been awarded Golden Kingfishers for best film at the Plezen Film Festival in various years.
9. Some of the awards have been retired. In three consecutive years (2003-05) the film "Kamenak" and its sequels "Kamenak 2" and "Kamenak 3" won the same award. Which of these was it?

Answer: Worst Film

Strictly the award for the Worst Film Award was not a "Czech Lion" but a "Stuffed Lion" but it was awarded as part of the Czech Lions award ceremonies.

"Kamenak" (with the appropriate diacriticals) translates to English as "bad joke". Although most Czech films released into the wider world are given an English title (not necessarily a straight translation) these weren't. If the award hadn't been discontinued in 2007, I suspect that the fourth installment would also have "won" when it was released in 2013.
Other films which were awarded this accolade include "Even Bigger Idiot Than We Had Hoped", "Fear Not and Start Robbing" and the intriguingly titled "Wild Beer".
As of 2020 the "Best Student Film" is awarded at both the Czech Lions and is a category at the Plezn Film Festival (where the awards are called Golden Kingfishers).
There was an award entitled the "Sazka Award for Best Unrealised Script". But this has also been discontinued from the Czech Lion awards.
The Wet Gunpowder Award is also a real thing, it is a political gesture of Iran and awarded to anyone who offends them.
10. In the first two decades of the 21st century in which of these categories could a film be awarded a Czech Lion but not an Oscar?

Answer: Best Poster

At most film awards, prizes are awarded each year in multiple categories . Often these are very similar from one ceremony to the next. Typical examples being best actor, best supporting actress, best director and the like.
The Czech Lions award a prize for "Best Poster", first given at the 6th Czech Lion awards and was still being awarded in 2020. The Academy Awards have for some reason not seen fit to make a comparable award in their first 95 Oscar ceremonies.
Readers of Douglas Adams might recognise the gratuitous swearing award from the "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" series.
