Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I think this is a good time for reflection and for prayer" "Coach, I'm hurt. I'm not dead!"

Answer: Remember the Titans

"Remember the Titans" (2000) featured Denzel Washington, Will Patton, Ryan Gosling, Donald Faison and Ryan Hurst, recently seen on our screens as the character 'Beta' in the television series "The Walking Dead". The film is based on a true story, but does stray from the true facts quite considerably in parts. The film grossed a respectable $136 million worldwide and went on to be nominated for a number of awards.

This quote comes from a scene in the hospital after star football player Gerry Bertier (Ryan Hurst) has been paralyzed from the waist down in an automobile accident and is visited by assistant Coach Yoast (Will Patton).

In real life, Bertier went on to be a Paralympic athlete, winning a gold medal for shot put.
2. "Nobody makes me bleed my own blood. Nobody!"

Answer: Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story

"Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story" (2004) stars Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Christine Taylor and a host of other known actors. Ben Stiller and Vaughn are owners of rival gyms. Stiller's character, White Goodman wants to own Average Joe's, owned by Pete LaFleur (Vaughn). The filmed grossed over $167 million and was nominated for a number of awards, even a Golden Raspberry award at the 25th Golden Raspberry Awards for actor Ben Stiller. He was lucky not to win, considering he was nominated for five of his films in 2004.

The quote was made by Goodman after being struck in the face with, you guessed it, a dodgeball.
3. "Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don't shoot their husbands, they just don't."

Answer: Legally Blonde

"Legally Blonde" (2001) stars Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods, Harvard law student and legal intern. This quote was delivered by Woods in defense of her fitness instructor client who was accused of murdering her husband.

The film was based on a novel of the same name, written by Amanda Brown in 2001. She based the novel on her experiences as a blonde, fashion obsessed student at Stanford Law School.

The film received mixed reviews, but managed to gross $141 million worldwide. The film received various awards, among them a Teen Choice Award, a BMI Award and multiple MTV Movie Awards.
4. "I'm the most dangerous man in this prison. You know why? 'Cause I control the underwear."

Answer: American History X

"American History X" (1998) starred Edward Norton, Edward Furlong, Stacy Keach and Fairuza Balk. Noted for its gruesome "curb stomp" scene, the film was critically acclaimed and garnered Norton an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He did not win, but won four separate awards (Satellite Awards, Taormina International Film Festival, South-eastern Film Critics Association Awards and Awards Circuit Community Awards) for his portrayal of Derek Vinyard, a former neo-Nazi leader and member of the Aryan Brotherhood.

This quote is part of a discussion had by an African-American inmate Lamont, with Derek in the prison laundry room soon after Derek joins the Aryan Brotherhood.
5. "Stay gold, Ponyboy."

Answer: The Outsiders

"The Outsiders" (1983) featured the likes of Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Emilio Estevez, Leif Garret, Diane Lane and Rob Lowe. All who went on to have great careers. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the film was based on a novel by the same name, written by S.E. Hinton in 1967. The author herself actually starred in the film. Coppola was convinced to make the film after receiving a petition containing fifteen pages of children's signatures, sent on their behalf by their school librarian from the Lone Star Elementary School in Fresno.

"We are all so impressed with the book, The Outsiders by SE Hinton, that a petition has been circulated asking that it be made into a movie. We have chosen you to send it to."

The quote is from a poignant part of the film where Ralph Macchio's character "Johnny Cade" is dying in hospital and tells C.Thomas Howell's "Ponyboy" to "Stay gold". This is a reference to the Robert Frost poem, " Nothing gold can stay".
6. "You're no Messiah, you're a movie of the week. You're a..t-shirt at best!"

Answer: Se7en

What a film this is. "Se7en" (1995) features Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman as two detectives tracking a serial killer who kills each victim in the form of one of the seven deadly sins, i.e. pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony and sloth. The killer (John Doe) is portrayed by Kevin Spacey. The film grossed over $327 million. Ironically, it was only the seventh highest grossing film in 1995. The film did not win many awards though, only garnering a small handful at the the 22nd Saturn Awards and the 1996 MTV Movie Awards where Pitt won an award for 'Most Desirable Male' and Spacey won for 'Best Villain'.

Mills (Pitt) and Somerset (Freeman) have an incredibly smug John Doe (Spacey) in the back of their police cruiser and Mills angrily denounces Doe's "work" which he claims to be special.
7. "Strenuously object? That how it works? Your Honor, I object. Overruled. Oh no, no, I STRENUOUSLY object. Well if you strenuously object I might have to move to reconsider!"

Answer: A Few Good Men

Another film with a stellar cast, "A Few Good Men" (1992) featured Jack Nicholson, Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland and Cuba Gooding Jr. Famed for the classic line by Nicholson as Col. Nathan Jessup: "You can't handle the truth!". Nominated for four Academy Awards, including one for Nicholson in the 'Best Supporting Actor' category, the film grossed over $243 million worldwide and topped the box office for three weeks.

This incredibly sarcastic courtroom scene comes from Kevin Pollak's character Lt. Sam Weinberg after Lt. Cmdr. Joanne Galloway (Demi Moore) objects and is overruled by the judge. She then strenuously objects which the judge does not appreciate. Lt. Weinberg then castigates her.
8. "Do you like Kipling Miss Scarlet?" "Sure, I'll eat anything"

Answer: Clue

"Clue" was released in 1985 and is based on the board game of the same name featuring all the same characters as the game. Christopher Lloyd portrays Professor Plum, Lesley Ann Warren portrays Miss Scarlet and Tim Curry is the star of the movie as the butler Wadsworth. A thoroughly enjoyable film, notable too for the fact that it has three different endings. The reviews were mixed, and the film grossed slightly less in North America than its budget. I personally think the dialogue is quirky and laughed outright at Curry's antics.

The quote is a good example of said dialogue. This is Colonel Mustard (Martin Mull) making conversation with Miss Scarlet (Lesley Ann Warren) at dinner.
9. "Last night I shot an elephant in my pyjamas...how he got in my pyjamas I'll never know."

Answer: Animal Crackers

The oldest film represented in this quiz, "Animal Crackers" was released in 1930. It features the Marx Brothers as well as Lillian Roth. The film is a Marx Brothers' classic and was quite commercially successful, grossing $1.5 million worldwide which was not a paltry sum in the 1930s.

Groucho's 'elephant in my pyjamas' quote is ranked at number 53 on The American Film Institutes' 2005 "100 Greatest Movie Quotes of All Time" list . Other great quotes from the film are:

"Then, we tried to remove the tusks, ... but they were embedded in so firmly, we couldn't budge them. Of course, in Alabama the Tusk-a-loosa. But that's entirely ir-elephant to what I was talking about."

"Ever since I met you, I've swept you off my feet."

"I was outside the cabin smoking some meat. There wasn't a cigar store in the neighborhood!"

The quote in the question is part of a long story Captain Spaulding (Groucho Marx) is telling guests about his visit to Africa. Definitely worth watching in my opinion.
10. "Man goes in the cage, cage goes in the salsa. Shark's in the salsa. Our shark."

Answer: Clerks

"Clerks" (1994) was the first film in a series of film maker Kevin Smith's "View Askewniverse" films. It was filmed for a comparatively pitiful sum compared to the millions it grossed in theaters. It was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the US National Film Registry. The plot centers around the exploits of two clerks, one of whom works in a convenience store (Dante Hicks) and the other in a video rental store next door (Randall Graves). It was also the début of two recurring characters from a number of Smith's films, Jay and Silent Bob, the latter portrayed by Smith himself.

"Da dun da dun da dun. Were gonna need a bigger boat!" This precedes the quote and is a nod to the classic "Jaws". Graves is making a shark with a Dorito in a jar of salsa. Working in the store when it is supposed to be your day off, is not exciting at all.
