Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On the wall is a black and white picture. Wendolene is on a train leaning out of the window. Wallace is on the platform below wiping something from her eye. Which 1945 film is this tender moment parodying?

Answer: Brief Encounter

Wendolene and Wallace are pretending to be Laura Jesson and Alec Harvey from the 1945 film, 'Brief Encounter'. The roles were played in the film by Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard. The film was directed by David Lean and the railway scenes were filmed at Carnforth railway station in Lancashire. This film is about love that can never be.
2. We now have a picture of a field surrounded by barbed wire. Wallace and Gromit, in the motorbike and sidecar, are attempting to jump over it. Which WWII adventure are our duo re-creating a scene from?

Answer: The Great Escape

In this picture our duo are re-enacting the escape attempt of Virgil Hilts, played by Steve McQueen, from a POW camp in 'The Great Escape'. This movie made in 1963, was packed full of stars, including Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, James Garner, Donald Pleasance and James Coburn, but was only nominated for one Oscar for film editing.
3. The third picture on my wall shows Preston, the robotic dog, on top of a famous New York building. He is trying to hit Gromit, who is flying around him in the porridge machine. Which epic film is being acted out here?

Answer: King Kong

Preston is playing King Kong on top of the Empire State Building in New York. 'King Kong' was originally made in 1933 and was re-made twice; in 1976 and 2005. The leading character, Ann Darrow, was played by Fay Wray in 1933 and Naomi Watts in 2005. In the 1976 version leading lady, Jessica Lange, played a character called Dwan.
4. We go to yet another picture which shows Wallace dressed in a raincoat and trilby. He is carrying an umbrella and dancing around a lamppost on a rainy Hollywood street. Gromit is stood in the background, dressed in a policeman's uniform. Which film is this picture depicting?

Answer: Singin' in the Rain

Wallace is portraying Gene Kelly's character, Don Lockwood, in MGM's musical 'Singin' in the Rain'. This scene has been re-enacted on a number of occasions. Morecambe and Wise's re-creation is classic UK tv and even Paddington Bear has performed the scene in his tv series, 'Paddington'.
5. As we move along to another picture, it shows Wallace, Gromit, Wendolene and Shaun the sheep holding hands, dressed in lederhosen and dirndls while singing and dancing across an alpine landscape. Which famous film is this parody from?

Answer: The Sound of Music

Our quartet are pretending to be four of the Von Trapp children from, 'The Sound of Music'. I can already hear Shaun baaing along to 'Do-Re-Mi', the song they sang during the picnic on the Austrian hills. As a girl it was my favourite film; I saw it shortly after its release and years later I saw it performed on stage in the west end of London, starring Petula Clark and Michael Jayston.

The real Maria Von Trapp described Clark as 'the best' Maria ever.
6. The next picture hanging on the wall is set in a laboratory. Wendolene is sat bolt upright on a table. She has very big hair. Gromit has just flicked a switch on some machinery and Wallace is looking at Wendolene in surprise. Which spine tingling movie does this portray?

Answer: The Bride of Frankenstein

Wendolene is playing the role made famous in 1935 by Elsa Lanchester. Boris Karloff played the monster in the movie and Colin Clive played Baron Frankenstein. In the same movie Lanchester also played the role of Mary Shelley, the author of 'Frankenstein'.
7. Moving along, the next picture shows Wallace, Wendolene, Gromit and Shaun dressed in red and white Christmas outfits and the snow is falling. I think I can hear a popular tune being sung, perhaps in a ski lodge in Vermont. Which seasonal favourite are our little band re-enacting?

Answer: White Christmas

Our foursome are playing Bob Wallace, Phil Davis and the Haynes Sisters - parts made famous by Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen in the holiday movie, 'White Christmas'. This is a firm favourite in our house, especially the final scene when the snow comes, heralding a happy ending for all. Mary Wickes plays a great part as housekeeper Emma Allen, president of the New England chapter of Busybodies Anon.
8. Further along the wall we see Wallace in the pose of a famous movie character. He is wearing a tuxedo and holding a gun; perhaps a Walther PPK. Wendolene is dressed in a bikini and Gromit is holding a gadget or two. In the corner of the picture is Feathers McGraw aiming a shot at our trio. Who is the character Wallace is portraying?

Answer: James Bond

This picture doesn't represent a particular 'James Bond' movie, but it does contain all the elements which make up each film; A dapper James, a Bond Girl, expert Q dishing out helpful gadgets and a menacing villain. Whilst Wallace has never been in the running for James Bond, he has proved he would make a passable Q with his many inventions and he should have been given a chance following the death of Desmond Llewelyn.
9. The next picture hanging in my hallway portrays a movie set in Egypt and shows a regal looking Wendolene sitting on a huge throne being pulled by Wallace and Gromit dressed in loin cloths. Which epic are our trio making a parody of?

Answer: Cleopatra

Wendolene is indeed Queen Cleopatra played, most famously, by Elizabeth Taylor in 1963. Many other actresses have taken on the role including Claudette Colbert and also Amanda Barrie in the film 'Carry on Cleo'. It is a shame that Wallace and Gromit didn't get the Mark Antony and Julius Caesar parts through.
10. Our final picture goes back to prehistoric times. Wendolene is a scantily clad cavewoman being lifted up by a huge flying creature. Wallace, a caveman, stands nearby and Gromit is hatching out of a large egg. Which period movie are Wallace and Gromit taking off?

Answer: One Million Years BC

This time Wendolene is playing Loana, sexy cavewoman played by Raquel Welch. Wallace plays Tumak who is thrown out of his savage tribe following an altercation with leader Akhoba. 'One Million Years BC' was Hammer's 100th production.
