Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Ranse and Hallie arrive at the undertaker's, who is already inside to pay respects to Tom Doniphon?

Answer: Pompey

Pompey, Tom's loyal friend right up to the end, is sitting there alone. Before they leave, Ranse tells him they'll be in touch, and slips him some cash for "po'k chop money".
2. When Ranse agrees to teach Hallie to read and write, who does he say can be his second student?

Answer: Nora

Ranse holds his class in a spare room of the newspaper office. It opens successfully, with both adults and children attending. With the news of Valance's intended violence at the upcoming elections however, Ranse cancels the school's classes.
3. What causes the standoff between Tom and Valance in Peter's Place?

Answer: Tom's steak on the floor

Valance trips Ranse as he brings the dinner order. Tom tells Valance that it is his steak which lands on the floor. He insists that Valance pick it up. Ranse can't believe they're ready to shoot or kill each other over one steak, and picks it up himself.
4. What does Ranse do when Tom shoots the paint cans and sprays paint all over him?

Answer: punches him

This is the only time in the movie that Ranse hits anyone. Tom is trying to show him what kind of tricks he's up against with if he faces Valance. Later, Tom nominates Ranse for delegate at the elections in Shinbone. He uses this punch as one reason for his nomination.
5. What mistake does Dutton Peabody make in the headline he prints after the Shinbone elections?

Answer: misspells defeated

His headline reads LIBERTY VALANCE DEFEETED. He says it is his unsteady hand that betrays him, because he is afraid of Valance. He says more courage can be purchased at the nearby tavern.
6. After Valance tells Ranse to be out on the street alone at night, who does Tom say will be waiting out back with the buckboard?

Answer: Pompey

Tom knows that Ranse is no match for Valance. He encourages him again to leave town. He says he will have Pompey wait with his buckboard. Hallie runs to tell Pompey to get Tom, because Ranse has his gun out to face Valance.
7. What does Valance do as he leaves the newspaper, after beating Dutton Peabody and vandalizing the office?

Answer: shoots Ranse's attorney sign

Dutton Peabody lets Ranse hang his Attorney at Law sign outside the office, rent free. When Valance turns around to survey his damage, he sees it and shoots the sign in half.
8. Valance wins his final poker game holding what card hand?

Answer: aces and eights

Shortly after playing the hand and collecting his winnings, Valance is shot and killed in his shootout with Ranse. Ironically this hand is commonly called the "deadman's hand".
Additional trivia: The term "deadman's hand" comes from the poker hand that legendary Wild Bill Hickock was holding when he was shot in the back and killed in Deadwood, South Dakota. Surprisingly, his grave markers spell his last name as both Hickok and Hickock.
9. Who nominates Ranse as the territorial delegate to Washington during the convention in Capitol City?

Answer: Dutton Peabody

It is during this convention that Tom tells Ranse that he is really the one who shot Liberty Valance. Ranse has left the room, because of his guilt at having shot and killed a man. Tom does this to convince Ranse to go back inside and accept the nomination.
10. What is the final line spoken in the movie?

Answer: "Nothing's too good for the man who shot Liberty Valance."

This line is spoken by Jason, the conductor, as Ranse and Hallie's train travels back East from Shinbone. Ranse has told Jason he will write a letter to the officials of the railroad, thanking them for their kindness and all their trouble to get him back to Washington quickly.
