Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The crime drama "Public Enemies" (2009) was shot in various places around Wisconsin. Who played John Dillinger in the film?

Answer: Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp played legendary bank robber John Dillinger, who led a multi-state crime spree through the Midwest in the early 1930s. Christian Bale played Melvin Purvis, the FBI chasing Dillinger. Channing Tatum was Pretty Boy Floyd, and Jason Clarke was "Red" Hamilton, both criminal associates of Dillinger.

"Public Enemies" (2009) was directed by Michael Mann. Much of the film was shot in Wisconsin, with several scenes shot in actual historical locations such as the Little Bohemia Lodge in Manitowish Waters. Other Wisconsin locations include Milwaukee (Greencastle bank robbery), Oshkosh (Racine bank robbery) and Columbus (also Greencastle bank robbery). And the Wisconsin state capitol subbed for the FBI headquarters in Washington.

Johnny Depp got his start in "A Nightmare on Elm Street" (1984) but has since moved on to bigger things, including being Jack Sparrow in the "Pirate of the Caribbean" series, which earned him his first Academy Award nomination. Depp was also nomin ated for "Finding Neverland" (2005) and "Sweeney Todd" (2008). Depp got his first huge break on the police drama "21 Jump Street" (1987-1990).
2. Who plays Gus Polinski, the polka musician from Sheboygan, in "Home Alone" (1990)?

Answer: John Candy

Candy plays the leader of a polka band who helps Kate (Catherine O'Hara) get back home. "Home Alone" (1990) is about a young boy left at home who fights off burglars using a variety of unconventional weapons. The film was shot in suburban Chicago during early 1990.

Candy was a Canadian actor who starred in many of the most popular films of the 1980s, including "Stripes" (1980), "Splash" (1984), "Spaceballs" (1987) and "Uncle Buck" (1989). He died way too early at the age of 43 in 1994.

Flaherty, Levy and Moranis were Candy's co-stars on "SCTV", a Canadian sketch comedy series which aired from 1976 to 1984.
3. Why does Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) return to his hometown of Waupaca, Wisconsin in "Up in the Air" (2009)?

Answer: Sister's wedding

"Up in the Air" (2009) stars George Clooney as a corporate hitman who fires people for a living. Vera Farmigia plays Clooney's love interest, while Anna Kendrick plays his protégé at the company. Ryan's sister Julie was played by Melanie Lynskey, who happens to be from New Zealand.

The wedding scene is important because it escalates the relationship of Ryan and Alex. Before, their relationship had been casual and based on sex; by inviting her to the wedding, Ryan takes it to the "meet my family" level.

Much of "Up in the Air" was set in airports, and filmed at Detroit Wayne County, St Louis Lambert and Ontario International (California). None of the photography was done in Wisconsin. The wedding scenes were set in Maplewood, Missouri, and much of the film was shot in the St Louis area.
4. What Wisconsin native plays the sheriff in the Door County based film "Feed the Fish" (2010)?

Answer: Tony Shaloub

"Feed the Fish" is set in the town of Ellison Bay, Wisconsin and was filmed entirely in Door County. Ellison Bay is a real place, near the northern edge of the Door County peninsula along the Green Bay side.

Green Bay native Tony Shaloub plays the sheriff. The film is about an LA writer who travels to Wisconsin, where he falls for a young woman (the sheriff's daughter), much to the sheriff's displeasure. The film has been compared to "Northern Exposure" as it features a small town with quirky characters and even stars Barry Corbin.

Shaloub got his big break as cab driver Antonio Scapacci on the sitcom "Wings". He is probably best known as obsessive compulsive detective Adrian Monk on the USA series "Monk" where he won three Emmy awards. More recently he won another Emmy for his work on "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel". Shaloub's film credits include "Men in Black" (1997), "Gattaca" (1997) and "Galaxy Quest" (1999).

Bradley Whitford is from Madison, DaFoe is from Appleton and Ruffalo is from Kenosha.
5. Daniel Plainview of "There Will be Blood" (2007) is based on Wisconsin native Edward Doheny, who made his fortune doing what?

Answer: Drilling oil wells

Daniel Day Lewis won his second Academy Award for playing ruthless oil speculator Daniel Plainview. "There Will be Blood" (2007) is based on the 1927 Upton Sinclair novel "Oil" and Sinclair used Doheny as a model for the millionaire character.

Edward Doheny was born in Fond Du Lac in 1856 and grew up in Wisconsin. He left to pursue his fortune, first in silver mining. But he made his real money tapping the oil reserves in southern California in the 1890s, then moving on to Mexico and Venezuela. By 1920, he was one of the world's richest oil barons. Doheny suffered a tragic downfall due to the Teapot Dome Scandal and the murder of his son. He died in Los Angeles in 1935. Many places around Los Angeles are named after Doheny.

The film was shot primarily in Marfa, Texas, with other filming in the Los Angeles area.
6. What Canadian actress plays Ana in the Milwaukee based zombie film "Dawn of the Dead" (2004)? She spends most of the film keeping zombies "Away From Her".

Answer: Sarah Polley

Sarah Polley plays nurse Ana Clark, who finds her neighborhood overrun by zombies. She teams up with a police officer (Ving Rhames) and several other people to fight off the zombies in a siege at a shopping mall. The movie is set in Milwaukee, although it was primarily shot in Toronto.

"Dawn of the Dead" is notable as the directing debut of Zack Snyder, who went on to direct several DC Universe superhero films. The film is a remake of George Romero's 1978 film. The film was successful at the box office, making a little over $100 million worldwide.

Sarah Polley is one of Canada's most talented actresses and a very gifted young director. She has won a Genie Award (Canada's Oscar) for both acting and directing and two Gemini Awards (Canada's Emmy) for her acting. Her directorial debut "Away from Her" (2006) earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay; Julie Christie won Best Actress for her role as a dementia patient.

Lindy Booth, Evangeline Lily and Bree Williamson were all born in Canada in 1979, like Polley. Lindy Booth was actually in "Dawn of the Dead" with Polley, as Nicole.
7. Which of these fictional movie presidents was a professor at the University of Wisconsin? Aaron Sorkin could tell you.

Answer: Andrew Shepherd

Michael Douglas played Andrew Shepherd, a university professor who becomes the Governor of Wisconsin and then President in "The American President" (1995). The film was the second collaboration between director Rob Reiner and writer Aaron Sorkin. The movie makes several passing references to Shepherd being from Wisconsin, including Chief of Staff A.J. (Martin Sheen) noting "without my help, you would be the most popular history professor at the University of Wisconsin." Sorkin would give Martin Sheen a promotion to President a few years later on "The West Wing" (1999).

James Marshall (Harrison Ford) was the terrorist fighting president in "Air Force One" (1997). William Mitchell (Kevin Kline) was the incredibly corrupt president in "Dave" (1993) and Merkin Muffley (Peter Sellers) was the president trying to prevent World War III in "Doctor Strangelove" (1964). None had any connections to the University of Wisconsin, at least none claimed in the films.
8. Which Kevin Smith film begins at Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee?

Answer: Dogma

"Dogma" (1999) opens with fallen angel Loki (Matt Damon) convincing a nun to abandon her faith at the Milwaukee airport. The film labels their location as Milwaukee, even though it was shot at the Pittsburgh airport.

The film follows fallen angels Bartleby (Ben Affleck) and Loki as they try to use Catholic dogma to find a loophole back to Heaven. The pivotal scenes take place in New Jersey - as do most Kevin Smith films.

"Dogma" includes Alan Rickman as the angel Metaron, George Carlin as a hippy dippy bishop and Alanis Morissette as God.

Perhaps the funniest story surrounding "Dogma" is that Smith attended a protest at a local theater and was interviewed on television protesting his own film.

"Clerks" (1994), "Mallrats" (1995) and "Jersey Girl" (2004) are all set primarily in New Jersey.
9. What Wisconsin community is the victim of "The Giant Spider Invasion" in 1975?

Answer: Gleason

"The Giant Spider Invasion" (1975) is one of the great bad films of the 1970s, and is set in Lincoln County. It was filmed in Merrill, the county seat of Lincoln County, and Gleason, about 15 miles northeast. And some scenes were done at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Gleason is mentioned at several points early in the film.

In a weird continuity error, Alan Hale Jr is wearing a uniform from Marathon County, which is home to Wausau.

As the title suggests, the film is about a black hole creating a portal to an alternate dimension, allowing giant spiders to invade. The film was directed by Bill Rebane, legendary for directing some of the worst science fiction movies of all time, including "Monster A Go-go" (1965), "The Alpha Incident" (1978) and "Invasion from Inner Earth" (1974).

Interesting enough, "The Giant Spider Invasion" stars some name actors, such as Barbara Hale (Della Street from "Perry Mason") and Alan Hale Junior (Skipper from "Gilligan's Island"). In case you care, scientists use technology to close the portal and stop the spiders.

The film was named one of the 'The 100 Most Enjoyably Bad Movies Ever Made' by the Official Razzie Movie Guide and was featured on "Mystery Science Theater 3000" in 1997.
10. Best picture winners "Annie Hall" (1977) and "Titanic" (1997) both feature leading characters from which Wisconsin community?

Answer: Chippewa Falls

In the car, shortly after they meet, Annie mentions to Alvy that she is from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. The film also features Alvy (Woody Allen) giving a lecture at the University of Wisconsin. Diane Keaton won the Academy Award for Best Actress for "Annie Hall" (1977).

Jack Dawson mentions he is from Wisconsin several times, and specifically names Chippewa Falls when he is at dinner. In a major anachronistic error, Jack talks about fishing on Lake Wissota, which is near Chippewa Falls. Lake Wissota is a man-made lake created in 1917, five years after "Titanic" is set. The lake is a popular spot for ice fishing. "Titanic" won numerous Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Leonado di Caprio was not even nominated for his work as Jack Dawson.
