Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's begin in China. Much of the filming for the 1987 movie 'The Last Emperor' took place in which of these locations found in Beijing, capital of China?

Answer: The Forbidden City

The Forbidden City (or Gu Gong, in Chinese) was first constructed during the reign of the Ming Dynasty back in the 15th century. 'The Last Emperor', which won a Best Picture Oscar, was the first western-made feature-length movie to get permission to film at this location.

Other portions of the filming took place in Beijing proper and in Manchuria (not to mention Rome, Italy, where the film was produced).
2. Rarely have any non-Muslims had a chance to step within the Muslim holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. However, one of the following feature films was allowed to do just that during its filming. Which of these movies includes footage within Mecca, including at the Ka'aba?

Answer: Malcolm X

Spike Lee's 1992 production of 'Malcolm X', a biopic on the life and times of the famous American civil rights activist, includes rare footage of Mecca. In fact, as of 2004 his movie was the only non-documentary film to have been allowed the privilege of filming within the confines of that holy Islamic city.
3. Let's stay in the Middle East for a bit. Which of these popular movies was partially filmed at the ancient stone site of Petra in Jordan?

Answer: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Steven Spielberg is well-known for having enjoyed using many unusual locales for the filming of the Indiana Jones films. In 'The Last Crusade', the third of the series, we are treated to scenes filmed in Spain, Italy, Germany, England, Australia, the U.S. and, of course, Jordan.

In this installment, Indiana Jones searches for the Holy Grail along with his father, played by Sean Connery. Their pursuit of the grail takes them to Petra, Jordan's city of stone, which, incidentally, is nearly 3,000 years old.
4. In the various James Bond films you will occasionally see scenes of famous international monuments and other world sites. In which of the Bond films do we see the hero not only fight the bad guys in the Eiffel Tower, but also a parachute jump from the world famous Parisian landmark?

Answer: A View to a Kill

The 1985 Bond film 'A View to a Kill' marked Roger Moore's last appearance as the British secret agent, and what an action packed film it was. Not only are we treated to scenes from the Eiffel Tower, but also the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. To top it off, Christopher Walken plays the bad guy, Max Zorin, who is trying to blow up Silicon Valley. Surprisingly enough, then, the film really wasn't that good!
5. The 1972 Bruce Lee movie 'Return of the Dragon' is entirely filmed in Rome, Italy. In the climactic sequence of the film, Bruce fights which of these well-known film stars in the Roman Colosseum?

Answer: Chuck Norris

'Return of the Dragon' was written and directed by Bruce Lee, and is most well-remembered for the clash between Lee and Chuck Norris in the cat-infested Roman Colosseum. This is one of only a few films to have ever featured the interior of the Colosseum.

The Italian government is unlikely to allow more filming within the confines of the ancient monument, they no longer even allow concerts to be performed there for fear that the noise will crack the stone.
6. I simply can't resist another question about Rome. Who directed the film 'La Dolce Vita', which features a now-famous scene of Anita Ekberg wading into the Trevi Fountain?

Answer: Federico Fellini

In this classic Fellini film, Marcello Mastroianni plays a self-indulgent gossip journalist who is infatuated by Anita Ekberg, a foreign actress. The film made famous the Trevi Fountain in Rome, a fountain which is otherwise rather gaudy in its construction. Nonetheless, the tourists flock there from around the world, thanks to 'La Dolce Vita'.
7. Now to the land down under, and a rare glimpse of one of Australia's rare natural treasures. What is the name of the natural wonder visited by the characters in the film 'Priscilla, Queen of the Desert'?

Answer: Kings Canyon

'Priscilla, Queen of the Desert' is the story of three drag queens who make a long journey to Alice Springs in order to put on the performance of a lifetime. The film stars Terence Stamp, Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce, the latter of whom has a dream to one day climb Kings Canyon wearing drag. He gets his wish.
8. The 1999 crime thriller 'Entrapment' starring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones featured the tallest building in the world at the time of its shooting. What is the name of the architectural construct upon and around which the film was partially based?

Answer: Petronas Towers

The Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, became the tallest building(s) in the world when they were officially completed in 1998. They measure 1,483 ft (452 meters) in height, and include a linking bridge on the 41st floor. Designed by American architect Cesar Pelli, they became the perfect scenic backdrop for the film 'Entrapment', which was directed by Jon Amiel.
9. Let's return again to James Bond, that jet-setting British secret agent. In which 007 film do we catch a lovely glimpse of the famous Taj Mahal in India?

Answer: Octopussy

Roger Moore returned in 1983 for another exotic adventure, this one taking him into Agra, India, among other interesting locales. In this film, Bond must locate a nuclear bomb that has been set to go off in Berlin in the hopes that World War III will be instigated. The film also included an acting performance by Vijay Amritraj, a famous tennis player in India.
10. The Best Picture Oscar-winning film 'Schindler's List' was actually filmed, in part, within the original Auschwitz concentration camp.

Answer: False

Steven Speilberg was not given permission to use the original death camp, so he constructed an exact replica of the place right nearby. Portions of 'Schindler's List' were also filmed on location in Kraków, Poland and Jerusalem, Israel.
