Ivor Cutler was born in Glasgow, Scotland on the 15th of January 1923; the descendant of Eastern European Jews. In 1940 Cutler worked for Rolls Royce making Spitfires. A year later he trained as a navigator for the Royal Air Force, he was dismissed for his apparent dreaminess. Cutler spent the remaining years of the war working for the Winsor Engineering Company as a first aider and store-man.
Cutler taught music, dance, drama and poetry up until he retired from teaching in 1980.
2. During the 1950s, Ivor Cutler wrote many songs that he tried to sell without any success, before deciding to sing them himself. Which instrument is Cutler well known for using?

Answer: Harmonium

Cutler and his pedal-driven harmonium became a regular on BBC radio, reciting his surreal and humorous poems and stories in his melancholic Scottish burr.

Ivor Cutler retired from performing in 2004, he died two years later at the grand old age of 83.
