Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Although I've fallen at every corner, ask not for shelter or for charity.'

Answer: In Tua Nua

1988 was the year that traditional Irish rockers In Tua Nua released 'All I Wanted' from which this lyric is taken. The album 'The Long Acre' was promoted by a tour that matched the band to a support group by the name of Birdland. Mismatched would probably be a more appropriate description!
2. 'And we take it down to the edge of town, where they have control but they're losing touch.'

Answer: INXS

The 1985 album 'Listen Like Thieves' was the breakthrough for INXS. The lyric taken from the title track. Once rated as the sexiest man alive, Michael Hutchence RIP.
3. 'I wish that you and me could be, inside of a rubber tree.'

Answer: The Jesus and Mary Chain

A compilation album by 'The Jesus and Mary Chain' was released in 1988 called 'Barbed Wire Kisses.' The album consisted of B sides and rejected material re-recorded and released on other albums. The lyric is from the track 'Swing.'
4. 'Painted words are whispered. It's no prayer. Whispering words, are drifting like the snow.'

Answer: All About Eve

I played the album 'All About Eve' to a friend of mine who had recently returned from a while in America. She said it was the most 'English' music she had ever heard. I know what she means, the music has a strong traditional feel. The track was 'In The Clouds.' The year was 1988.
5. 'Woke up to reality and found the future not so bright. I dreamt the impossible that maybe things could work out right.'

Answer: Johnny Hates Jazz

How on earth this album found its way into my collection I shall never know! 'Turn Back The Clock' was the only album released by Johnny Hates Jazz. The lyric was taken from the 1988 release 'Shattered Dreams.'
6. 'They got a prisoner in the wagon while the children chase the dragon, always not enough.'

Answer: Simple Minds

From the anti-apartheid album 'Street Fighting Years,' the track 'Great Wall of Love' symbolised the birth of politics in Simple Minds' music. Seems more recent to me but the year was 1989! The album featured a plethora of stars, Lou Reed (Velvet Underground) a cameo vocal on 'This is Your Land,' Stewart Copeland (The Police), and Peter Gabriel (Genesis (and Peter Gabriel!)), who wrote the track 'Biko.'
7. 'She has one friend, he lives next door, they are listening to the weather, he knows how many freckles she's got.'

Answer: The Sugarcubes

First time I heard this track 'Birthday,' by The Sugarcubes I couldn't for the life of me make out what I was listening to. The more I heard it, the more I liked it. I guess the same happened to a lot of people as the the career of a certain Bjork was launched on the back of this album. I'm not a fan of people taking my photo either.
8. 'I'm taking a swing at this shadow of mine, crucifix hangs and my heart's in my mouth, but it's here.'

Answer: Tin Machine

On leaving the shop I dropped this cassette on the floor and broke the case. Skinflint that I am it has never been repaired. This is one of my prized possessions, Bowie releases an album under a name other than his, I suppose, the first since 'Ziggy Stardust.' The album was 'Tin Machine,' and the music was performed live in the smallest of venues and featured John Lennon's 'Working Class Hero.' The year was 1989.
9. 'You know we ain't always winners, but this is the life we choose, and we won't change or rearrange, 'cos we ain't ever gonna lose.'

Answer: Kiss

I've followed Kiss for a long time, this was the first time they had ever taken their makeup off, I went to the concert at Stafford Bingley Hall and I'm not sure if it was a good idea! Music however was absolutely marvelous. The track was 'All Hell's Breakin' Loose,' from the album 'Lick It Up.' You feeling old? No? The year was 1983. Bet you are now!
10. 'Hide on the promenade, scratch out a postcard "how I dearly wish I was not here".'

Answer: Morrissey

The Smiths ... RIP ... Long live Morrissey. This was a track from his first solo album 'Viva Hate.' Can you believe the man, talk of nuclear bombs and Thatcher in the same piece of music? 1988, we did as we pleased, I won't pass judgement. Love the music though. Make your own mind up.
