Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the song "Moonlighting", where do the lovers meet every night?

Answer: Discotheque

In the first two lines of the song, the scene is set:

"He sees her at the same time every night
At the Mexican discotheque"
2. What 'French' items do our hero and heroine give each other in the first verse of the song?

Answer: Kisses and cigarettes

"She gives him french kisses
He gives her french cigarettes "

Who gets the better end of this deal? You decide!
3. Which Rod Stewart song inadvertently gets a mention in the lyrics?

Answer: Tonight's The Night

"He whispers slowly tonight's the night
Months of planning so it's gotta be right"

Leo Sayer and Rod Stewart - now there's a strange mix!
4. His van is "parked in an alley, just by Montague Street". What type of van is it?

Answer: A blue Morris

"His blue morris van is parked in an alley
Just by Montague Street"

A vehicle that is familiar to older British and Australian quiz-takers, but probably much less so to anyone from any other country. Given that the song is (presumably) set in the early to mid 70's, the Morris referred to was most likely a variant of the Morris Minor 1000.
5. Who re-sprayed the van in order to assist the escape of our couple?

Answer: Eddie

It would appear that Eddie was an 'accessory' to their 'crime'...

"His friend Eddie he did the respraying
So he couldn't drive it all last week"
6. What occupation does the male subject of our song have?

Answer: He works at a Printing firm

Our un-named hero has an unspecified job at a Printers:

"9:15 Monday morning at the printing works
The boss notices someone's not clocked in"

Of the other choices, the Discotheque is a bit of a red herring, as this is where the two meet in the first line of the song. The 'Council Water Department' is where our female song subject works.
7. What is the surname of the female subject of our song?

Answer: Park

"And the Water Department of the Council offices has a message
That Mrs Park's daughter is missing"

Little does Mrs Park realise that her Daughter finds the whole episode rather amusing:

"She laughs - My mother will have lost her mind"
8. Our couple run away by driving on the M6 Motorway. At which turnoff do they stop to eat?

Answer: Carlisle

"Meanwhile the Carlisle turnoff the M6 Motorway"

Carlisle and the M6 Motorway also get mentions in the Wings song, "Helen Wheels":

"Carlisle city never looked so pretty, and the Kendal freeway is fast
Slow down driver, wanna stay alive, I wanna make this journey last"

and

"M6 south down Liverpool, where they play the west coast sound"
9. What was the temperature of the food and drink they consume at the Motorway turnoff?

Answer: Cold coffee and hot cup cakes

"Drinking cold black coffee eating hot cup cakes"

The author always heard this lyric as "Drinking Coke like coffee"! I never did understand exactly what that meant!
10. How far have our couple travelled by the time they are "Only ten miles to Gretna"?

Answer: Three hundred miles

"We're only ten miles to Gretna
They're three hundred behind "

Leo was born as Gerard Sayer in Sussex, England, in 1948. He now lives in Australia. He has come a long way since running off to Gretna.
